Got into an argument about them tearing down Confed monuments with a friend.

People look at the Civil War through contemporary eyes and not through what it actually was. States back then were more like their own little countries and were all united in a Union much like the EU with the only one up that they spoke all the same language mostly.So when civil war broke out it was more like a bunch of small countries banding up to fight a bunch of other small countries. The southern pride and monuments to the confed are there because that was their country going to war. Imagine if war broke out in the EU right now and reunited after wars. Each country would have monument dedicated to heroes on their side. Super low cost of living and it's not a very large city, so you can get just about anywhere in the city in less than 20 minutes. The majority of Civil War statues in the South were erected by the Ladies Memorial Association. These women were responsible for reinterring hundreds of thousands of dead Confederate soldiers, scattered about the South, usually found in poorly dug shallow graves. What a gruesome task! The statues they erected commemorated these events, and respect today for what they did is still required.

I have no allegiance to the Confederacy, don't support what it was fighting for as a whole, had some family fight for the South but most for the North (how it was in mid-east/east Tennessee, deeply divided between Union and Confederate), but doesn't the sheer age and historical weight behind these monuments give them at least an historical credence as artifacts worth preserving? Plus there's plenty of stunning sculptures and monuments from the late 19th/early 20th century that dot the South. Even if you remove them from say a public square they should at least be kept up in some museum or commemorative garden of sorts, that way they'd be out of the controversial limelight but still be appreciated and maintained for the history that they are, a decent compromise I think. But nah, lots of folks want to annihilate our history in the lens of modern values instead of looking at the good and the bad in a nuanced way and seeing the value that knowing our past gives us.
