Also, I actually did my A level English coursework on Margret Atwood's dystopias, in comparison with Huxley and Orwell. The Handmaid's tale is basically Nineteen Eighty-Four, except with patriarchy instead of communism. Except that it has none of the imagination or subtlety. Atwood admitted herself that she just ripped off a couple of stories that had been in the headlines and took them so far they almost became parody. There's none of the world-building details like Newspeak. None of the subtle little moments of terror like turning opening a diary into a life or death situation, or making the reader fear for what two children will do to their own parents. There are no characters with the psychological complexity of O'Brien. She just continuously bludgeons you over the head with 'men & religion = evil'.

And for the record, I still say that Nineteen Eighty-Four itself was pretty basic compared to Brave New World.

I haven't read the book, and I want to because I want to know if the author touches on gun control as a precursor to the governmental coup. In the show they depict a protest where government soldiers open fire on the crowd. This is depicted as a turning point, the moment when things got "hot". My first thought was that this wouldn't be so simple in the US with an armed population. The central premise is really quite illogical: There is a fertility crisis so we need more restrictions on sex? It just doesn't make any sense. It is interesting to see a depiction of what Christian sharia would possibly look like, but its also absurd because only the tiniest sliver of the most insane christians would support government sanctioned rape babies and be able to reconcile that support with their religious beliefs.

I love dystopian stuff and I can barely tolerate this show. Some of the acting is really, really good and it is a technically well produced show but it has an underlying theme of absurd paranoia. If a right winger made a show about the muslims instituting sharia after assassinating most of the government and executing a coup by force it would be implausible for the same reasons.

I've actually read the book. As much as I like dystopias, I couldn't like this one too much. It's supposed to be a dystopia, but really, the book fails to provide a counterargument to forcing reproduction through concubines, or "handmaids", in order to boost birth rates.
A red pilled person would recognize that the dystopian novel actually provides a tangible solution to the declining white birth rate epidemic.
