the American Pit Bull Terrier is indeed a very vicious breed, specially considering its genetic predisposition for aggressiveness and its very muscular build. It's the quintessential guardian dog, but it's very possible to have a tame Pit Bull if you're not a dumb negroid and manage to get one from a proper breeder.

Things to be considered that are key to making it a cool doggo are: neutering it as soon as possible, keeping it in a very social environment, need to be very playful with it from puppy age to adulthood, and also one of the most important things: Pit Bulls are an extremely energetic breed so you'll have to walk often with it, ideally twice a day but at least once.

It will be very loyal and the likelihood of an attack happening will be very low, if ever. You have to do some real dumb shit to get bitten by a very well-raised Pit Bull.

Yes, some are more volatile than others.
I wouldn't keep one in the house with a three week old baby no matter how well behaved because it is too risky, but with training and discipline, they are fun as hell to take out in the woods to catch hogs, or tow you on a rollerskates (This requires a lot of training and trust!).
I would be careful about rescue pits because the risk of behavioral problems increases if there is a history of abuse, and if it was a fighting dog, it is too risky to adopt.
Look for scars indicative of fight bites, and see how it reacts if you stare it down.
It is far better to get it as a puppy, and train it every day. Give it plenty of love, but when it misbehaves you have to discipline it harshly so it knows you are the boss.
Don't chain it outside and ignore it, they harbor resentments about that shit.
