I don't think so. I'd have to look into it, but I think in many jurisdictions, self defense only counts if you were conducting yourself in a reasonable fashion. If you bait someone into attacking you, or if the average person wouldn't be caught dead in that situation in the first place, then I think it doesn't count. Maybe it has something to do with him technically disturbing the peace before this incident happened.

The other thing is that reasonableness also applies to responding to violence, in many places. Was it reasonable for him to take out a knife, and stab two people to death while 'defending' himself? If he stabbed someone while they weren't a threat to him, I don't think it would be considered self defense.

Beyond that self defense in most places requires you to act like the biggest pussy. I know where I live it's something along the lines of retreat as soon as possible and only do enough damage to get away. A lot of it depends on if the police want to charge you or not. I know sometimes self defense and related crimes get a free pass. For example, using carrying and using mace for the sole purpose of defending yourself in Canada is against the law. You are not allowed to carry weapons, even if it's to defend yourself, and if it's intended to be used against a human, then it counts as a weapon, but I doubt some lady that avoided getting raped by using mace would get charged.

Well, they aren't legally attacking you. As far as I know hate speech is still legal in America, although some places do have a "fighting words" clause that enables you to fight people who tried to offend you but that's relatively rare.

Therefore a general rule here is 7 cm or more if you want to kill people.

People underestimate how much damage one can do with a knife, and how quickly, a smaller knife can often be an advantage as you can move it quicker and people often don't even notice it before they've been stabbed a few times.

I'm guessing that's what happened there, no one expected him to get violent, and it was over before they'd time to defend themselves.
