I have no idea.

How did they afford building everything to look good in the old times, when everyone was supposedly much poorer than today?

That new building looks depressingly Finnish. Damn.
The top one would've been quite comfy to look at during the winter nights; many people likely have many good memories because of it.

Because back then people who made decisions didnt listen to those who were angry about giving lots of money to fancy projects.
Nowadays you get a protest against any artsy public building project.

The punchline may be that the cheap looking, uncreative, non-aesthetic design may be the reason they have more money at the end of the day. These kikes would probably tryand convince us a piece of particleboard with a string is fashionable footwear if they could.

This is the correct answer. Jews basically rule architecture/design in every Western country. Jews hate everything beautiful.
Also great projects breed resentment in niggers and other muds who cannot do such things, they demand to be included and it runs everything down.
>>
>>127593678
That's not terrible.
>>
>>127593258
The best part is that it was done by Alvar Aalto, the only architect known to the public. Or it probably done because of it, he had a Master-status and nobody dared to question his ugly shit because he can't be wrong.

Block-buildings should be banned.

>>127593678

1) More laborers. In my hometown there used to be over 100 independent bricklayers unaffiliated with any company or crew for longer than a single job. Now there's less than 20 people who know how to lay brick AT ALL.

2) Local resources. When all of the materials are produced less than a day's travel away transportation cost plummets.

3) Simpler supply chains, due to above.

4) Modern amenities add in huge costs. Air conditioning, electricity, plumbing, water, heat, cooling, fire escapes, lighting, it all adds up.

5) Cities used to be self sufficient out of necessity. All produce was local because you just couldn't get crops from halfway across the country to EVERY city easily. Same with basically every product. Automobiles, the suburbanization of society (Compare American cities to European ones), and globalization mean urban areas don't have to be self sufficient. Costs slowly rise long after the alternative died off, so there's no alternative to compare it to.

Once when I was in Malmö, I witnessed the only major "ooh shit" fuckup accident I've seen in my life.

I can't remember exactly what car but some nice four door BMWish car smashing into a concrete traffic blocker totally wrecking the side by the first wheel, as he tried to turn into a parking lot.
I'm pretty sure the car was game over after this, he turned fast to enter the lot and it "scraped" the side, the first wheel turned "inwards" and the metal casing got bent from the front of the car to the second door, first door totally bent inwards where the concrete "blocker" were and then the car "sank" resting only on 3 wheels and itself.

He looked so crushed and his wife was pissed off at first then calmed down, it actually was quite humbling seeing their patience of it all but I guess they were well off and insured.

It was somewhere on this picture but I don't know exactly where, but by the ocean.
RIP in peace.

The shape isn't that bad, but the rest of the environment ruins it
>commie bloks in the background
>shitty garden in the center
>billboards
>everything near the ground is grey

If there's anything I don't like in that building it's the pale orange colour on the balconies (might look good if there's sun though), as well as the general shape of the balconies. Hell, they should've used darkened glass, too.
>>
The basic gestalt
>Most architects in the 60's and 70's are pinko commies
>They tried to emulate USSR commieblocks
>They succeeded
>Time goes on
>Now modern architects emulate the "style" because it allows them to design disgusting, featureless commieblocks without admitting that they're completely devoid of talent
>Governments pay for it because it's easy and also because they're full of pinko commies

Brutalism is the worst thing to ever happen to architecture.

Jews started the whole modernist and postmodernist movements, these inculed not only architecture, but other arts like painting, photography, philosophy, films and much more.
They started these "movements" in the early to mid 20th century and it rejected all kind of philosophical and artistic movements from the Age of Enlightenment, renaissance and the classical arts.

To put it short, these "movements" were created and exist solely to shit on everything created by Europeans, from paintings, to architecture, to philosophy with the goal of eliminating them, that's it, jews pushed (and keep pushing) their postmodernist crap in a intent to erase every cultural feat accomplished by European societies.

You don't see more Gothic, Baroque, Classical, Romanesque, Beaux arts architecture anymore because jews infiltrated every single school of art and architecture, and convinced every single soul that the past is wrong and "postmodernism" is nice!

>>
>>127594156
This guy gets it. Spending extra resources to make something look nice isn't capitalist. Buildings are made as cost efficient as possible. Further, nice design is usually inefficient in terms of resources and interior space. Ugly block shit will get you more offices/apartments than a beautiful building, which is more money for the owners.

European architecture never had that much "national" identity since it built upon classical architecture and integrated pretty much everything good from every western/white/European society, as well as elements from conquered lands (and even some conquerers).

If you're not using this "national" identity in some vague Paneuropean sense, it doesn't really work, it's more of a collection of regional identities.

You can for example find a lot of Ottoman architecture that's perfectly humane (although suited for a different temperament), just like European architecture.

1. modernism
2. profit

Modern age is degenerate, computer and plastic age of disposable products. Therefore architecture must be the same, as every other art.

Also, it's not viable and profitable to make decent looking buildings and products for everyone because there are so many of us. What do you think what would happen if every housing is plastered in classical architectural and highly ornamental style? We would go bankrupt. Therefore, with population boom architecture becomes brutalistic, cheap, easy to build, easy to maintain. Clean cut edges, geometric shapes, etc. e.g. Corbusier Stalinist crap.

Thanks for proving my point.
Right one is Bouchout Castle in FRANCE and the left one is indeed Kalmar Slott (which is Swedish). But the fact that you think the stone would be noticibly different is what told me you just guessed, since spoiler alert the germans had access to the same type of stone as we do (and the danish bought a ton from us). And look at a old german castle, same stonework.

Thanks for proving my point in such a good way, and the fact that you had a lucky guess about the Swedish one and then ruined it by talking out of your ass made it even better.

So with every Socialist intended housing scheme, which makes soulless kolhoz blocks to house the millions of workers, there is also a clear intent to degenerate and destroy art, culture, and soul. Hence starchitects such as Libeskind and other oven dodgers.

This is also one of the reason I think right wing revolution is improbable, because if you want to counter the effects of Kike led modernism, you'll need to undo 70+ years of mass concrete jungles, and that's impossible. To achieve aesthetics, every inch of modernist architecture (including skyscrapers, roads, everything) would need to be destroyed. Now think how long would that take and what would people think. Right now that's vanity.

This is correct. Low-bid-wins and "fiduciary responsibility" essentially ruin the possibility of ornate architecture.

Also, above a certain height, traditional architecture doesn't work at ALL. Skyscrapers have a very narrow range of ways they can look without collapsing, or spewing materials from hundreds of feet up in a wind storm. Good architects can still make a city's skyline have character and identity, like in NYC or Chicago. Bad architects give you commieblocks or Vancouver.

There are architectural styles that developed in a certain region (or multiple regions at once) but they inevitably spread farther than a single country's borders if they were any good.

Anyway, my main point is that post-WW2 architecture is shit unless it's specifically some sort of revival of something pre-WW2, and this is not simply because of national features (although of course there are elements of that).

If you look at contemporary architecture in Europe and Islamic countries (I don't know, Saudi Arabia or something), you'll see that Arabic buildings actually still have their traditional elements and ornamentation and whatnot that makes them recognizable as being from that part of the world. But they're regardless complete soulless shit just like their Western counterparts.

Different times, different resources both materially and skills wise (not as many artisans about). While that picture is not the best example, typically newer designs are more cost effective both in building and (biggest savings here) over the long term through maintenance.

You can use older materials well, that's where there's a deficit in design education mostly. But trying to ape older ways of building leads to pastiche - you get like a Las Vegas or Disneyland version of what you're aiming to build.

Sort of. If you look at it it's mostly a back and forth about form against function. So gothic revivalism in the late 19th century is about having exposed hinges and brackets and shit because the functional elements are meant to be beautiful, you get this again with these modernist style domes where the form is trying to be purely functional, same again with brutalism where the concrete still shows the wood form work it was cast in and so on. The last equivalents to what you're calling classicism will be stuff like arts and crafts and minimalism by that measure.

1885' building left to rot by the owner because it's easier and cheaper for him to exploit the land, instead of rebuilding it exactly as it was before (as required by the law for historical buildings). Sad, many such cases.

Lovely Greek styled town hall here - one of the few old style buildings left in birmingham. Obviously it's an odd take on a building in an urban centre but i still think it's lovely
>>127607255
being 22 and trying to get my business to the point where i can make enough money to move out of my parents house and somewhere nice. Believe me, i don't want to live here (also i'm not IN birmingham - im out in the suburbs like a white person, but it's the nearest city)

And as much as /pol/ likes to shit on the Irish, i remember visiting my family in the city centre when i was young and before the Muslim horde took the city over and the Irish still had a presence there. It was by no means the ritz, but it still felt like a place you could walk around freely, there wasnt grafitti everywhere etc

Everyone likes to meme on Birmingham but it really was a nice place for a while

same story, building is owned by an investment firm that decides to "hold on" to it for more than 25 years - completely ignoring maintenance as to induce a state of decay, then proceeding to demolish everything and profit from the land. In those 25 years or so, the building will "peacefully" still exist as a home for gippos or other homeless.

Sharks that will sell their own souls just for money. I'll never understand the mindset of a man that destroys art.

I'll take neoclassical tackiness over a painted box. Haven't looked into stone prices. Some anon on here was saying the old roman style stone public buildings are about as expensive as modern ones. Many people have no real training in classical art principals or proportions, so their creations look tacky. As long as you stick to the principles you could carve a beautiful palace out of shit.

Expensive desu

Everythings on a budget, and we have gibs to hand out, single mothers to support, a failing socialist healthcare system etc

So we need to build any governmental buildings on the cheap or leftists will be triggered that we aren't spending the money supporting niggers or homeless or whatever. Thus cheap materials, plus all the new stuff like fire exits and lifts and all that stuff adds a lot of cost.

>But didn't the earthquakes made a lot of older buildings un-viable for use

Yep, but that didn't stop the people from still living their lives in those buildings. The authorities classified the buildings as Red-1 - essentially meaning that if an earthquake over 5.5 comes, the buildings are at risk of falling down - and advised the owners to leave. Most of them chose not to, either because they are old or because they simply do not care or want to move to another place.

tl;dr 1/3 of the city, especially the historical pre-war buildings, are classified as Red-1 (more than 350+ buildings built between 1800's-1900's).

All the signs point to a large earthquake happening in Romania - the last big one was in '66 and there's usually a tectonic pressure relief every other 50 years or so (recorded since medieval times). If the earthquake is higher than 6, Bucharest will fall down into millions of pieces.

Not only do they insist on building new monstrosities, they insist on destroying old classic buildinga.

Look up the ROM in Toronto. A classic old museum that some peckerheads added a hideous modernist addition onto, ruining it

Roger Scruton, a traditionalist thinker, claims that modernist architecture serves a political purpose. It is a globalizing force, because if you have these same abstract buildings everywhere and get rid of local architecture, then you feel like you are in a borderless world

When what was old was the norm, architects purposfully set out to build "modern" things to stand out.

When those "modern" things proved cheaper and easier to build, and because they stood out and the old stuff was becoming unmaintainable and boring, other architects followed suite.

When all the old structs were torn down and what few became unmaintainable, with all the old architects either retired or dead, along came the third act in this theatre of madness where "modern" is the new old.

Hey Romaniabro, I spent some time in Brasov and Sighisoara a few years ago and they were the most cozy places I've ever been. Would kill to live in a place like this.

Anyone want to live in a late Medieval timber frame village? I'm saving up for a property to build one on. I have experience with cabins and barns and have been learning about the Fachwerk style and design

Luckily, the Danubius fountain wasn't destroyed, it was just relocated to the busiest square in Budapest, where tourists often vandalize it.
>Look at that fountain Si Fon, let's break the statue's fingers and take it as souvenir.

Lots of those in England from the Stuart period.

Thank god. Sucks that it's being vandalized, but hey, as long as it remains...

totally different styles, bro. Transylvania sort of looks like a lot more Western, due to Germanic/Austrian/Hungarian influence. Wallachia (Bucharest) developed a different style - neobrancovenesc or neo-romanian - hence why everything differs between the lands, except the commie architecture, which is clearly universal.

>pic related, Sighisoara or Schäsbrich or Schäßburg, built by saxons and germans back in the 1200's

I'm reading that it's essentially opposed to modernism, as geometry in Art Deco was used for esthetic purposes, as opposed to functional ones.
Obviously we could argue semantics, but Art Deco is definitively distinct from modernism.

That looks totally out of place now surrounded by all those progressive structures, have (((Varg))) torch it
