If you're sick of $12 tickets and $8 bags of popcorn - blame the studios and the distributors, not the theaters.

Worked at a theater for 8 years, first as a projectionist and eventually as a manager. The way the system works is that the theaters, by contract, have to pay distributors a studios a cut of all ticket prices for the films they screen and these rates have skyrocketed over the last 20 years.

Back in the 80s, the standard rate was 80% opening weekend, 70% the first week, 50% the second, 30% the third and beyond. It meant really good movies with staying power could make the theaters a lot of money... enough to keep their prices down and their wages high.

Now the standard rate for any non-independent film is 99% opening weekend, 95% first week, 90% second, 85% third, 80% fourth, and so on. The reason theaters are forced to charge $20 for a popcorn, cut their staff, and cut their wages is because they don't make any money on the actual ticket sales anymore.

The fucking Star Wars prequel characters have 100x more personality than these chucklefucks. I think the taboo against "cringe" has reached a point where anything new and interesting is shunned because people are afraid it won't be "cool". Actual emotional depth is ridiculed for this reason so movies are packed with sarcastic and nostalgic quips.
