Even the poorest American can afford more room than a rich european. Why is housing so expensive in europe compared to the US?

Taxes, I think.

They fell for the stone meme even though a properly built wood house will stand up to the elements just as well, and better in some cases, for 1/2 to 2/3 the cost per sq ft.
We have less space, that's it

Amerilards need more space

a LOT more old buildings.
Also: anyone can build a giant stick-construction McMansion in Snakeballs, Iowa for $300,000. Euros live closer to cities, so property is more expensive. A lot of the old buildings and houses are stone and are harder to reconfigure than stick-construction houses.

Land value is extremely high in many European countries. Cheap land and wooden houses means less money.
In my town a small 3 bed terraced house with a tiny garden is £400k+

europe is far more compact in terms of its populous living closer to the city, which drives up the price for land around the cities, making everything expensive and confining the population in concentrated areas that are kinda correlated with class and income.

2000 sq ft of land is too big assuming house is 2 stories, 1500 sq ft is much more comfy.
