Roehm and several other high ranking SA members who supported Roehm were planning to kill Hitler.
Viktor Lutze was let in on the plot and then informed Hitler and Himmler.
Hitler then decided to do one clean sweep of this plot and other enemies.
Bottom line is that the SA had become corrupt and needed to be cleaned.
