And besides, if you count for the labour in hours grinding that blade each time will cost you more than replacing a canister.

Cowskulls are thicker relative to a human skull, but the brain is a lot smaller though.
But it still has enough power to take out the brainstem wich controlls respiratory and cardiac fucntions as well as consciousness and the central nervous system.
Snipers call this zone of the brain the T-zone (or sniper's apricot) since it's the perfect kill-shot.
In a hostage or wartime setting it's basically impossible to hit someone on the back of their head with perfection.
But if you restrain the subjects it's a very quick, clean and humane way to end someones life.

Or you could use a .50 cal or higher, the subjects head explodes before they even can hear the round going of since it's supersonic.
It's a lot more traumatising for the clean-up crew though.

OK DESU too many people have no fucking clue what hanging really is.

First of all, breaking the neck usually doesn't happen, and even if it does it's not fatal. What kills the victim is the rope tightening around the neck and compressing the arteries, cutting off the brain's blood supply. A secondary effect is that the victim's weight is on his windpipe. It's usually not enough to outright crush it, but it forces the base of the tongue in a position where it cuts off air supply.

So why drop the victim from a height? Well, it supposed to break their neck, but more often the yank just tears apart the spinal cord, making the victim paralysed from the neck down. It stops the lungs, but not the heart, and with the whole suffocation thing, the lungs aren't very useful anyway. When the neck is actually broken, ideally the bone splinters cut the spinal cord. Why is it useful? Because a suffocating person tends to shit piss and ejaculate all over the place, and if they are struggling and kicking around, it can create a lot of mess (smearing the entire room in shit, as it was reported in several cses of suicide). So better break their neck.

Now, as I said, breaking the neck doesn't kill, suffocation does. The time to lose conciousness can range anywhere from 30 secs to 15 mins, depending on how well the hanging is done, and how the rope is placed.

The most "humane" way is to place the noose right at the back of the head. It makes the rope tighten rather quickly, and do its job. Placing the noose sideways can make the breaking of the neck easier, but it also makes the rope iself less effective, making the whole thing more agonising. That's why arab countries do it that way, if you watch gays hanging out in iran, the noose is sideways and they are slooowly dragged up with a crane. Obviously no intention to break their necks. The worst is if the noose is at the front, then it can last for hourrs.

Now, some form of conciosuness is retained until the moment of death. People who survived hanging reportedly remembered things minutes after they entered the convulsive state, which is involuntary kicking and twiching. The convulsive state can be as long as 45 minutes. That's why hanging in the USA was supposed to be at least 1 hour long, to make sure the victim is dead.

TL;DR it's a much more nasty way to die than it seems.

The cheapest and most humane is to tell them they're about to be released and when they reach the door to put two bullets in the back of their head.
Total cost is two bullets and some heavy cleaning supplies. They get to die in a fairly good mood. Everyone's happy.

You are thinking of sheep and pig-slaughter.
Sheep get stunned via an electric clamp placed at their temples resulting in a non-lethal stun.
They do the same with pigs although in our country they prefer to gas them with CO2 since you can gas larger quantities in one sitting.

Bovines are larger and more difficult to manage.
So they get individually driven in a rotating restrainer where they get a bolt driven through their skull to insure a quick death, but without damaging the cerebellum to keep the hearth pumping.

In all three cases the animal is stunned and their heart keep pumping to ensure a safe and thorough bleeding before processing.
