I think that we, as a species, need some type of planetary defense program against large meteorites and bolides that could effortlessly wipe out human civilisation as we know it. The Taurid meteor stream is of particular concern:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taurids

Our planet experienced only a sample of the wrath of the Taurids in the early morning of June 30, 1908, when a huge bolide exploded in the sky above Siberia with the force of a 20-megaton nuclear bomb, levelling 400 square miles of remote forest around the Tunguska River. The glow lit up the sky as far away as Western Europe. The Tunguska object was a 150-foot comet fragment - one of the Taurids. No-one was killed as the bolide affected only an uninhabited area of forest. However, had it exploded over a major city, there would have been thousands of potential casualties and we'd be paying a lot more attention to the risks posed by our cosmic environment. It may also be that fragments of a giant, disintegrating comet caused the Younger Dryas, a geological period of global cooling that suddenly began 12,800 years ago and ended equally suddenly 11,600 years ago when the planet started to warm up (perhaps due to the return of the same comet which initiated the Younger Dryas). The Taurid meteor stream is at least 30 million kilometres 'wide' and contains at least one object that is 30 kilometres in diameter and at least one hundred objects that are 1 kilometre in diameter and they are ALL on Earth-crossing orbits. Furthermore, ALL of these objects can potentially wipe out human civilisation as we know it should they hit Earth or even explode above Earth's atmosphere. Our cosmic environment is NOT harmless by any means and should be treated as such. This is NOT a scenario of gloom and doom, however, because we HAVE the technology today to sweep our immediate cosmic environment clean to prevent civilisation-destroying objects from harming our planet - all we need now is the will to use that technology.

Previously we used angels for this purpose, but we could have a global planetary defense for this, first we need to master gravity manipulation.

>first we need to master gravity manipulation.

Not really, all we need to do is coat asteroids with white paint to deflect them into different orbits (not even joking).

>tfw whiteness saves the day..... again
>>
>>127456055
how can you even do that? what the fuck are the physics of that?
>>
>>127457451
white reflects light.
im assuming just changing that much at a very advanced point in its discovery would over time change its course.
as in the sun will push it or something.

By painting asteroids, you fuck with their albedo:

So instead of Bruce Willis we just need to send some Mexicans?
>>
>>127457998

I don't get it.

Good luck getting funding for that when most of the wealth hoarders would love to kill off a few billion humans so they can have their utopia.
>>

Have you seen Armageddon? Bruce Willis plays an oil driller that gets sent to plant a bomb in an asteroid headed for Earth.

Here in the US it's a common practice to hire illegal Mexicans ("day laborers") for construction and house painting.

The problem is we don't even have a way to detect the most threatening asteroids, let alone do anything about them.

For example, the Chelyabinsk meteorite in 2013 went undetected because it came from the direction of the Sun. Allegedly there is a plan to put a near-earth asteroid monitoring system in orbit around Venus, but there have been no updates about it for years.

Nope, thanks for the explanation though.

In our (((profit-based society))), perhaps what we need to do to get people to give a shit about preventing asteroids from harming Earth is to incentivise the moving of dangerous asteroids with a plan to mine those asteroids after they've been moved. Asteroid mining is a viable solution to the depletion of Earth's natural resources. Asteroids are known to contain VAST quantities of metals and minerals (including rare earth elements that are essential for electronic appliances like smart-phones!). Not only that, but we can unfreeze the ice on asteroids so that we have water to drink. We can also split the water into its constituent elements, hydrogen and oxygen, and use the hydrogen as rocket fuel while using the oxygen to breathe. Also, daily reminder that the asteroid 253 Mathilde has an estimated value of over 100 TRILLION dollars and is thus the most valuable asteroid we currently know about. So maybe it's time to start mining asteroids. And remember: If we can MINE asteroids, then we can MOVE asteroids.
