You need a fixed gun safe in your car, multiple safes in the house to store the weapon in multiple pieces and ammo separately, and I think one has to be in a windowless room and bolted to the foundation of the house. You need to report all weapon and ammo purchases. You need to have a reason to own it, but this can be something simple like having joined a shooting club, have attended multiple times, and continuing to attend.

Any kid can spend a few hours on the range and reliably plink targets at 300 meters. I prefer my AK to AR, but 5.56 is the most economical round. Yeah, you're not going to shatter cinder blocks like you do with 7.62x39, but it also takes less material to make, it's lighter (meaning you can carry more rounds), autistic differences in ballistics, etc. There's a reason why Russia switched from 7.62x39 to 5.45×39mm.
