What are the most important languages in the world?

I'm thinking about taking some Mandarin courses at school. Will knowledge in Chinese be worth the trouble?
>>
Arabic
>>
Are we talking about economic importance here? Because if so, the most important tend to be Mandarin, French, German and Japanese. Chinese is the most widely spoken, but Japanese is good in business, and German is the largest EU economy, and French is powerful in its own right.

No. You will never be fluent in Mandarin unless you spend years and years at it. Learn a European language like Italian or French. Or since you are in America learn Spanish.

Taking courses in any of these you will actually learn a lot and once you finish it is very easy to continue learning in your own time without help from teachers.
>>
>>127426476
Chinese is not worth the trouble for personal use & travel, but is useful for business. I think >>127426657 has the best answer. Unless you're a weeb.
>>
>>127426476
It's not worth it. Mandarin people use animal names for other countries, thailand is "cat people", france is "wolf people" etc. You are not even human in their eyes.

Seriously they're cunts ask anyone in the steel industry.

If you want to learn a language, learn english. if you already did that, german is pretty easy, and useful.

if you're dead fucking serious learn russian and get ready for one great literary adventure after another.

Well if you want to take a vacation to Europe I guess you'll need to be familiar with Arabic, but who would want to learn such an ugly language?
Chinese is the superior option.
你好

>>127426807
Chinese is also good for business. They're expanding and their businesses are getting very savvy. For example, the largest infrastructure in downtown Los Angeles is invested by a Chinese group.

Maybe I'm just biased 'cause I've been studying Chinese for 5 years but it's very useful.
大家都应该学习普通话,世界的未来就是中国的未来!
>>
>>127426476
Learn chinese if you want an introduction to other oriental languages. Japan uses chinese in their script, and Korea has a lot of similar sounding words with chinese like "library" or "kitchen". At the moment china is growing economically right now I'd say its a step in the right direction but then again I wouldn't want competition from foreigners. Learn whatever you want
>>
>>127426956
Really? Years and years? I've really wanted to learn to speak Mandarin or Japanese. Haven't decided yet, but if I do I would go hardcore at it. But taking years seems a bit intimidating.

That's completely and totally wrong wrong.
Theword for France is 法国 (fa guo), law and country literally but it's based off of the pronunciation of France. Thailand is 泰国 (tai guo) which just means tai and country.

Don't make up shit and say it like it's a fact just because you think it is without doing the slightest bit of research.

Chinese and English. Spanish is one of the most important, though.
>>
Speaking apart from super influential and important native swedish: English, Spanish and Portuguese.

Will learn Chinese. Arabic would also be important due tobthe sheer number of speakers, but will not learn because it sounds too ugly and demonic.

But... English is the most important language, obviously. It has cemented it's place to always be.

I wanna learn enough languages to be likely to be able to communicate onnall continents, though.

Anyone who is under 40 and goes through life without knowing more than one language is likely retarded.

I know it's a hard question to answer, but how hard it it learning chinese compared to other languages (with roman alphabet)? If you have learned other languages, that is.

Ancient Greek and Latin.

>>
Mandarin isn't worth it beyond learning for sake of learning. Its a tonal language so saying one word could mean like 10 different things. Which is horrible when you're dealing with other folks.

English is probably only real language you really need to learn. Spanish is a distant second because illegals refuse to learn English.

Learn Mandarin at your own risk
>>
>>127427148
Really depends on how much time and effort you put into it. I know a girl who started with Uni courses and went from zero to translating
Mandarin live on German TV in under four years.

Also remember that it is not that you will be completely useless for the first few years. It will sound like shit but they will start to understand some of what you are trying to say after 6 months. After two years you will understand most of what they are saying. It may take "years and years" but it is something totally worth doing. Do it! But take Mandarin. China is the future.
>>
>>127427148

Because china is like the US in the sense that it was united through one government. They are all different people with different languages but the chinese script was used to standardize the country's language. You can pronounce 你 as 'ni' in mandarin or 'lei' in cantonese. Cantonese is used in places like guangdong.

>>127427893
Where do you think singaporeans come from? My grandmother is from china and she now speaks english fluently. Not to say most chinese cant speak some form of english because of exposure to foreigners, especially sellers on online malls.
>>
>>127427527
They have picked one to use, it's Mandarin. The only part of China that you need ANY Cantonese is Hong Kong but they also know English there. The other 99% of China uses Mandarin.
>>127427605
Chinese doesn't have letters, per se. Each character, which there's up to 5000 used regularly, has its own meaning and its pronunciation.
It is hard, but not as hard as it sounds, because every character is made up of a few different radicals which are used in multiple characters. The radicals imply meaning or pronunciation usually.
For example: the word for rice/food is 飯, which is composed of two smaller characters/radicals. The left part is 食, which means food, the right is 反, which is pronounced fan and suggest the pronunciation of 飯, which is also fan, but with different tone. The meaning of 反, which is "against", is irrelevant to meaning to the character, but is important to phonology.
Writing and reading is the hardest part but eventually, if you put enough effort into it, you get used to it.
>>
>>127426967

What are the most important languages? That depends where you're at and what field you're working in. For an American, it's probably Spanish since that's what all South American countries speak plus if you learn it, you probably can guess 90% of Brazilian Portuguese as well.

In Europe, it would be English, French and German.

Chinese - is that worth learning when dealing with 20 cent junk items wholesale and they are going to rip you off anyway? I think not.

Arabic - not worth learning either, since THEY want to sell their oil to us. Except maybe when you consider intelligence work, then definitely Arabic and Persian.

There is no useful language to learn for a native English speaker. It's all based on your career goals and personal goals. Not even the Chinese wants to replace English with Mandarin as the lengua franca. Mandarin is very impractical to learn as a second language -- English is actually easier.

For an Amerifat, I would suggest you definitely learn Spanish though. The hispanophone is steadily increasing, and it will one day include America itself. By 2050, half the population will be of Hispanic descent. We're probably headed towards a Canada situation, where the second official language will be Spanish.

I'm looking for a good university, actually I was looking for taibei as well
>>
>>127431108
Venezia is fine. It even rejects kebab stores to sell in the city centre. How many cities have guts to do this in Europe? It's a tourists city indeed but a beautiful one nonetheless.
>>
>>127431351
Taipei is quite shit though. You should consider Singapore and HK at first then perhaps some great universities in Beijing and Shanghai.
>>
>>127431429
Yes but it is like Disneyland. In Venice there are maybe 50.000 habitants. 20 years ago they were 200000. Everyone is leaving, no more tradition no more people, just stupid tourists... I prefer much more Rome, Florence and Naples.
>>
>>127431518
Really? Actually I was hoping Taipei could be better than China... anyway i am checking 浙大 in hangzhou... it seems quite good
>>
>>127431610
Florence is beautiful, with the bridges and rivers.

>>127431721
People in taipei speak hokkien and use traditional Chinese characters. It might be hard to understand, and the hokkien is pretty forceful language
>>
>>127431610
Firenze is simply one of the best all Europe and Roma is the capital city though, can't really compared with tiny Venezia. How is Italy doing lately though? Economic wise.
>>
>>127426476
English, Mandarin mb Spanish.
>>
>>127431816
>People in taipei speak hokkien
Not really though. It's more of a thing in southern part of Taiwan.
>>
>>127431816
Yes Italy is beautiful we have a great history and this makes me angry because everything is going to be fucked up due to leftists
>>
>>127431721
I'd suggest you go to Singapore and HK first if you had the privilege to choose. Hanzhou is a great and huge city with lovely sights so it might be a good pick.
>>
>>127432003
Fuck off you FOB kindergarten English teacheing dork, Hakka is spoken in Northwestern Taiwan. Fujian-hua is mostly spoken down south. In any case, everyone will understand you if you speak Mandarin (sans the aged 65+ crowd)
>>
>>127431874
Let's say Italy is better than Germany, Sweden and so on... I mean, they are richer than us but still, if a nigger raped a girl we would kill him. In Germany the next day people would organize an antiracist parade... however we are.getting into serious problems because of refugees and our economy is dying because of EU
>>
>>127432264
LOL, THIS MAD. How is legalizing gay marriage treating you?
>>
>>127432264
Yes, just like in guangdong. They speak cantonese but everyone understood me when I spoke in putonghua
>>
>>127432364
I'm right though? You're just someone who travels the world speaking English and spreading disinformation about wherever you travel too, you probably think you're so "cultured" too. Hedonistic loser.
>>
>>127432364
Most of the people are against it but mondialist propaganda is fucking strong. I think one day they'll make it. However in Italy there is a fucking good movement called Casapound, it is the last hope for us to save our country
>>
>>127432276
Hmm, sounds just like every other ageing society with debt problem to me. I believe Italy(at least northern part) is still one of the best place to live in the world. Perfect food and weather.
>>
>>127432377
They're not just speaking Cantonese in Guangdong, they've got a LOT of dialects down there. When I first came to China for work it confused the fuck out of me.
>>
>>127432487
Nothing I've said is wrong. You are just mad without any valid reason. HOKKIEN is indeed not widely spoken in Taipei, why denying the simple truth.
>>
>>127428068
>Gonna learn French next so I can speak to black people in their native tongue.
Kek
>>
>>127432680
>>127432003
>Not really though. It's more of a thing in southern part of Taiwan.

Just go back to Reddi/t.
>>
>>127432536
I thought Italy already legalized gay marriage,no? That's not very progressive of you. But I was talking about recent event in Taiwan about legalizing gay marriage not Italy.
>>
>>127432547
Actually I prefer the south than the north. Food is great and it is really beautiful... just try to type on Google cala goloritzè, tropea, otranto, lecce and so on... you will understand what I am talking about...
Anyway yes I agree with you, it is an old country and it is difficult to react to the various problems
>>
>>127432752
No, Mad Taiwan greeny froggie is too entertaining to miss.
>>
>>127426657
Only produce religious text.
Static since 500.
This is the least useful language, only fit for sub85 "people".
>>
>>127432866
They legalized it but still it is very ambiguous... it seems they did it to make happy both the Jews bot the people

Actually, I'm an American. You kindy-teaching folk are like the plague, I just wish you would go back to Redd/it because you're not just useless but worse.
>>
>>127432904
You are right. I just googled those placed and the Mediterranean part of Italy with gorgeous beaches and cliffs and beautiful seaside towns are heaven on earth. Hope rapefugees, I mean African doctors, won't ruin them.
>>
>>127426476
English and maybe Spanish. Mandarin ain't worth shit.
>>
>>127433284
How about you go back to niggerish burger land first?
>>
>>127426476
Chinese is not that important because the Chinese will simply learn English, not the other way around.

If you really want to learn a foreign language that are both somewhat important and relatively simple to learn I would learn one of these (in no particular order):

1. German
2. Italian
3. Spanish
4. French
>>
>>127433527
You're the one dancing to Bingo, buddy.
>>
>>127433389
Actually the good stuff about the south is that rapefugees are just a few. Not like the north unfortunately
>>
French obviously. We are going to be a super power in 2050
>>
>>127426476

As a linguist speaking five foreign languages fluently, I confirm that mastering (and then maintaining) a language is the most ungrateful, most unrewarding thing ever.

It only helps if you go to your chosen country and use their language as a native. It opens doors closed to other foreigners, and makes an experience of living abroad more worthwhile. That is how you decide on the importance of a language. But even then those people around you will most likely take it for granted that you speak their language like one of them.

But if you study a language with a hope a foreign company will hire you to work for them, then, it is just completely retarded, because they will hire their very qualified own anyways.

An ideal outcome is when you master a language of your choice and then can take advantage of people who speak it for your own benefit.

I was thinking about learning german the other day, is it really that easy to learn? And aren't most Germans under 40 speak passable to fluent English already? Isn't it just like the case of China?
>>
>>127433823
Well it all depends on what language you speak. English is very easy for Germans because they are both Germanic languages so they have quite some things in common. This means Germans will have an easier time learning it than say Spanish people for example. For me German is easy because I speak Dutch and they are both Germanic languages and have a lot in common. If you are fluent in English then German will be a bit of a challenge in the beginning but you will get used to it eventually.

I studied Bengali and Farsi (and speak a little Arabic) and people chat shit so much if they think no one can understand them. France and Italy are the worst for it though. I was on a train in France with my sisters and two French guys were openly talking about them. Had to tell them to shut the fuck up. Italians at my old workplace used to talk shit all the time in Italian.

In order of economic utility:
>English
>Mandarin
>Arabic
>Japanese
>Spanish
>Russian
>French
>German

Those are really the only widely spoken ones with a lot of job opportunities going, although if you learn an obscure language the niche is very useful (I've had a lot of job offers based on Farsi/Kurdish proficiency).

Cultural importance:
>English
>French
>German
>Russian
>Greek
>other European languages/Farsi
>Japanese
>>
>>127433759
Here's a breakdown of my languages:

Russian: Native, still use it with friends, for inner thinking, for derivation of ethnic identity, otherwise probably useless?
English: Crucial.
German: Use it to get around in the environment, otherwise useless. However, I will have need for it for a long time still.
Japanese: I use it for the consumption of Japanese popular culture, otherwise it is useless. However, the consumption thing is worth it alone.

Overall, these languages outside of English are all plausibly useless including Japanese, as everything of note gets translated. Two are circumstantially required. Such is the modern reality.
>>
>>127434885
German is useless in Deutschland?
>>
>>127434885
>German
>useless
Please elaborate. I don't want to learn that I learned those fucking der, die, das, den, dem, des, etc.. for nothing
>>
>>127435318
No, but it would be useless outside of it, unless you want to read their philosophers specifically in German. The only reason I truly need German is because I work here. I like the language a lot though, and I wish it had more non-meme international prominence, but I'm being realistic.

>>127435378
Read above.
>>
>>127434885

I've spent 7 years in Japan and the working knowledge of Japanese is absolutely imperative there. Plus, my experiences of Japan were considerably better compared to other English speakers who were mostly confined to their own group of English speakers only.
>>
>>127435622
To clarify, German is actually highly useful in Germany for all aspects of life, unless you are a turboautist and avoid talking to people as much as humanly possible. A surprising amount of people either speak very little English or are uncomfortable with it, and the locals will absolutely prefer to use German with each other at every opportunity, so you'll be left out of most conversations.

>>127436333
Not saying languages are useless within their home countries, but without, you should evaluate very carefully; even so I have use for all my four languages.
