>>127289451
Because the Britcucks gave us Imperial in the 1700's and we've been using it since.

Also Imperial is much easier to approximate using just your eyes alone.

Estimate what 1ft is, and then do the same with 333mm or 33.3cm or 3.33 decimeters or .33 meteres
>>
Because nobody brags about how many centimetres they are.
>>
Metric fags fail to realize that the imperial system works pretty well for most day to day things. Also, all measurement units are arbitrary. Further, the whole base 10 thing in metric, you can do the same with imperial. Anybody with half a brain can figure out what a kilo-pound or a centi-foot is.
>>
>>127289540
>we slowly are

Bullshit.

Do you get the day's temperature on the news in Fahrenheit or Celsius? What about baking? Are the speed signs on the roads in mph or kph? Do you buy gas by the gallon or liter? Is your height on your driver's license in feet/inches or cm, etc., etc., etc.?

They've been teaching metric in schools since the 1970s. Doesn't mean anyone uses it or even remembers it, unless they get a job that requires it (even then, they drop it as soon as they're off work).

Nobody seems to want to say the correct answer.
We started out with the imperial system when technology was being advanced during the industrial revolution, and our machines were built using imperial standards. Roads, milk bottles, cars, and many other products and services have imperial standards and changing them to metric would cost so much money that you can't even fathom it. Imagine changing literally every mile marker in the US.

Where I live, you have to be familiar with both systems, and I actually prefer the imperial system of 1/2s, 1/4s, 1/8s, etc, to the metric system of 1/10s, 1/100s, 1/1000s, etc.

But they both suck for temperature, so use Kelvin/Rankine.

Better question: Why the fuck do people keep asking this?

It was tried in the 70s, went over like a lead balloon, the Metric Board was abolished in the early 80s. No American politician talks about it anymore. Did you see Trump or Clinton discussing it at the debates? No. It's a 100% dead and buried political issue. Metric lost, and it's not coming back.

You're literally applying your own experience with imperial as a general rule. If you're educated in metric, metric makes more sense.

Not metric.
>Further, the whole base 10 thing in metric, you can do the same with imperial

>Anybody with half a brain can figure out what a kilo-pound or a centi-foot is
Which basically just argues in favor of metric.
>>
Inches are a really nice unit of measurement.

I use both though. To me, using a 9 inch hammer makes more sense than using a 23 cm hammer. If youre strictly using metric, you're using a lot of tiny numbers.

>>
Base 10 sucks. We're only used to counting in tens because of ten fingers. Base 12 is much better having more factors... divisible by 1,2,3,4,6 and 12. Much easier to divide into thirds AND quarters. Works much better IRL applications involving geometry, i.e. architecture and construction. We should get rid of decimal and use duodecimal, then we will reach next level intelligence.

As several people have said, the system we are using works a lot better for literally every day to day task. Metric is really only superior as a system where you are talking about really large or really small numbers and having base 10 makes things easier for calculation. Conversely, because it's an arbitrary base 10 for everything, no metric measurements really related to anything and are frequently too large or too small to really make much sense. For example, you pretty much have to read metric temperatures in decimals.

As for muscle cars, they are measured in cubic inches because you calculate the area of a cylinder using πR^2*L. Metric doesn't gain you anything here, either. The relevance to length for things like oversquare vs undersquare hs no difference in metric.

What does make a difference is instead of 1/2 & 9/16ths sockets you have 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 15mm, and 16mm for some insane reason

A big thing you neglect is that a lot of formulas in imperial require fudge factors to account for unit magnitude differences you don't have to deal with in metric because the powers of ten just propagate right through.

A 1 kilo mass, subjected to a 1m/s2 gravitational acceleration on a low gravity body will exert 1 newton of force on the body

A 1 pound-mass object, subjected to a 1ft/s2 gravitational acceleration on a lower gravity body will exert 0.031081 pound-force on the body's surface. lolwat.

For most shit people do it really doesn't matter, that is, like, if you're doing cooking, a measuring cup in ml will work just as fine in one in fluid ounces. a diet scale will do just as good in grams or ounces. and cm really work just as fine as inches. there's no point bothering changing them for those uses, because the people who already use imperial or metric already have a concept of those units.

But if you're actually doing anything important (i.e. what makes white people white and brown people sit around blowing each other up with shit white people made) then what really matters is how well the units play together, and while it sometimes results in some rather miserable things like the pascal being stupidly small or the farad being stupidly big, with all practical applications requiring tacking on a kilo, mega, micro, or nano onto them, it also still enables them to play without having to introduce fudge factors, like calculating torque.

power, imperial:
(RPM * Torque (lb-ft) )/ 5252 = HP

power, metric:
rads/s * torque (N-m) = W

though really you're probably just trolling and i got nothing better to do on a saturday morning/friday evening

Fellow burger, cooking units in the EU is way less intelligent than you give them credit for.

Everything is done by mass, not volume, unless they're liquids. Eurotards literally have no idea how to measure, say, a cup of flour. Ask for 500ml of flour and they would try to fill a beaker or some shit

The metric system was introduced because European units of measurement differed from town to town etc. (Napoleon did). The Brits, thanks to their empir, already had implemented uniformed measurements in its colonies and its more prosperous cities, making trade and innovation easier. The Bongs did not get conquered so they kept using "imperial".

Pretty sure metric is gonna take over or it will become a hybrid like Canada/uk.
>>
>>127306366
>Why do you use metric tonnes instead of megagrams

1) Habit & convenience - giving often-used denominations their own name makes it faster to recognize (tonne, liter).
2) Legacy units, rescaled into metric (centner)
3) Units, arising from measurement practices (hectare, kWh)

>Really I'd be completely ok with imperial if we stopped using fractions and instead only used decimals
Indeed. Nothing wrong with named denominations, as long as they map to metric scale.

The Metric system uses base 10 which is low tier. It's only objective strength is that it consistently is base 10. The rub is that metricfags never question base 10 math. They think moving decimal points exclusively belongs to base 10 when an base can do that. Imperial is a mess by comparison specifically because it lacks that kind of consistency.

A superior measurement system would be either base 12 or base 16 and which consistently scales like metric.

I'm the principal engineer at a large company that works with customers that use both Imperial and Metric measurement systems.

The greatest reason that we do not use Metric for everything is that most materials manufactured in the US are based on Imperial units. Good luck changing that any time soon. Want a 10mm plate? It has to be ground from 1/2" which is extra $$$.

Designing in metric is much easier than Imperial. Fractional measurement is terrible, and there is an inherent precision improvement with the metric system even when using similar tolerances.

Metric > Imperial
Imperial costs less than metric in the US
>>

i like imperial system because thats what plato used, there was something along the lines of being made of univeral ratios in our bodies

We do for everything really matters. For conducting commerce and dealing with the weather? It really doesn't matter what units you use as long as everyone else understands the units you're using.

That's like saying 'hurr durr I've always seen english people complain about learning japanese but never japanese people complaining about learning english.
Being brought up in a difficult system and then learning an easier system is a lot easier than going with an easy system and learning a hard one.

Plus when it comes to subdividing a standard imperial unit; like say the Noble inch, you can keep halving Zeno's paradox style to get the granularity you need; 1/2, 1/4, 1/8... 1/64... Also how spectral analysis and sampling works. Makes more sense in a quantum world, and base-2 applications.

you are senpai .anyone with any units-autism-powerlevel knows this . pic related is all the nations that signed the treaty of the meter (red\pink are member states, green is edgy 'former members' ).
all the nations in red\pink on this map use the "International System of Units" (SI).

the only thing different with he US is they have 'american units' defined on the basis of regular SI ones with weird conversion factors . they are all however the same units.

Too expensive.
Every bolt and nut, in every store. Every speed limit sign. Every mile marker. Every tape measure. Every wrench. Every engine. Ad infintium... would have to be changed. You know we're billions in debt right? So it's seemingly too much of a economic liability.
>>
>>127289982
Even in industry we use mils (based off of the inch) instead of millimeters.
>>
>>127289982

>Doesn't mean anyone uses it or even remembers it, unless they get a job that requires it (even then, they drop it as soon as they're off work).

Explain why this is a problem? In the UK, colloquial weight measurement is in fucking stone, yet the euroboos don't ever bitch about that, nor is it a problem for them.

>Russkies didn't gave enough shit about the Moon
you mean they cancelled their moon program because they were butthurt over US doing it first .ruskies had way better engineers and had a lot more accomplishments for a given amount of money then the US but commie nepotism\corruption\politics pushing the timetable fucked their shit up.

>>127321587

No one can be good at it because it's impossible to get good data, in part because of the unreliable methodology, in part because the theories are all completely wrong and arise from liberal speculation.

>pound (force)-seconds (lbf·s) instead of the SI units of newton-seconds (N·s)
This is hillarious as fuck
>>
>>127321805
> it's impossible to get good data
that fact that the vast majority of psychologists cant get good data dosnt mean its impossible . there's plenty of sub fields of psychology that study things which are independent and can be isolated from most human culture or even studied in species evolutionary close to humans eliminating cultural factors altogether (cant necessarily be applied to humans but makes interesting results)
>>
>>127321965
they're literally the same unit seeing as the pound is defined in terms of the newton.
>>
>>127289451
Love how American's claim they don't use Metric because they're not slaves to European standards etc when the whole Imperial system is built on European kings.

u wot m8 ? a pound is DEFINED to be X number of newtons (i dont remember the conversion factor) wheres a newton is defined in terms of other SI units which are either based on fundamental quantities pf objects (like the kilogram, which will go fundamental this year)
>>

>1 pound force = 4.44822162 newtons

My university has more important discoveries and inventions than your country.

Electron, proton, neutron, radioactivity, gluon, synthesised music, the electronic computer, graphene.

Expanding to the UK, the world wide web, radio, television, the phone, thermodynamics, mechanics, particle physics, gravity, the mechanical computer, the train, all laws of electricity, magnetism and then electromagnetism with maxwell's equations. Hydrogen (and 23 other elements). Keynesian economics.

The only thing preventing me from going on all day is the character limit.
