Well, I meant that there is a distinction between a hero story and the various genres of film. Hero stories tend to take on traditional European storytelling elements from archetypes like Beowulf, Siegfried, Hercules, Odysseus, etc...

You can see great films that don't take on this mold with their characters, protagonists and antagonists. Like Heat for example, it was very morally gray and not traditional in any sense. It was a story about two complex men, with all of their personal desires and confictions and etc... competing against each other. One stood for law and order, the other stood for himself and the law was in the way. It was more like an old morality tale/Hollywood western than a hero story, like Batman or Superman or etc... Who absolutely take on those classical modes to tell those types of stories.
