The short answer is that the rise of scientific inquiry and reason undermined Christianity as a belief system. This, coupled with the unprecedented destruction of WW1 left the people of Europe adrift.

The response to this was existentialism, but only a small minority of people were able to formulate their own reason for being. Those who could no longer cling to Christianity and were not able to make the leap to taking responsibility for their own being were left with two alternatives: nihilism or totalitarianism.

Totalitarianism in the form of neo-nazism persists because there are still many people unable to take responsibility for their own being. They cling to an ideology because they don't want to examine themselves for fear that they won't like what they see, and want to be able to blame external factors for their failures because the alternative is having only themselves to blame for their pointless suffering.
