Quick Rundown:
DUTERTE DECLARES MARTIAL LAW IN MINDANAO
http://archive.is/agkHv

This Declaration is likely due to the attacks made by the ISIS affiliate "Maute Group" attacks on Marawi this May 23
http://archive.is/hHrzZ

New info:
>31 Maute members killed, 13 AFP soldiers killed
>Heavy fighting in brgy. Basak, Bangon and Gandungat
>large parts of Western Marawi under control
>air strikes are being conducted
>more reinforcements to arrive

Current situation:
>IS fighters took control of a part of Marawi city (200 000 + inhabitants), capital of Lanao del Sur
>Anti-terrorism jail under their control, prisoners freed
>the jail and police stations are being destroyed
>AFP (armed forces of the philippines) are on their way to counter attack
>Marawi city mayor says that IS fighters didn't face resistance from army and police
>IS linked medias spoke about a major IS operation against the philippinian army in Marawi
>AFP says that the clashes started after they tried to capture one of their leaders (Isnilon Hapilon)
>Duterte declared martial law in Mindanao for 60 days
>Heavy fog of war, government tries to downplay the situation while people on social medias are probably overexagerating
>Duterte now allows citizens of Mindanao to have weapons to defend themselves
>Maute, Abu Sayaff ,and BIFF forms a new group loosely translated as ISIS of the East
>NPA has been confirmed to execute offensives in Mindanao and presumably other parts of the country
>Fog of war is still thick only the confirmed deaths are the reliable data for the happenings

STAY ALERT FOR EARTHQUAKES

Japan will only give us free things if it only concerns around Spratly dispute or any action we take that will piss off China, but secretly they are trying to condition us into a proper meatshield if there would be a time where China finally loses its shit and starts invading its neighbors which will probably never happen now after Duterte won.

>>
>>127201186
I get the feeling that there's more to this attack than it seems, it's an unusual time to attack, since it's just before Ramadan, and usually these groups attack afterwards, since they try to observe the holy month. I do get the feeling that there's got to be someone that's coaxed them into attacking specifically now, and specifically Marawi, to embarrass the country.
>>
>>127206224
You're asking the guy who gives Israel $4B+ yearly allowance? Nevermind the Saudis
>>
>>127206224

>We don't get jack shit from you

Here's the difference. Philippines didn't ask for Muslims, they just had them. Spanish came later and Christianized the islands. Then the Christians realize they have a huge problem with all the muslims.

YOU GUYS ON THE OTHER HAND, you invited the refugees, even though you didn't have to. You chose this, the Filipinos had it thrust upon them.
>>
>>127205584
I think you should separate the people who are unhappy about martial law into groups though.
> People who don't like the martial law because they fear it will go to shit.
> People who are happy that there is a martial law so that they can show how good people they are by protesting against it.

I mean, the first group can be reasoned with. And they should be reassured that this is not something that is done to fuck over The Philippines but to save it.

The second group can be ignored.

>>127206603
I doubt it really matter if youre talking inside the Phils, Duterte has 80-90% approval rating so his critics are hard pressed to disaggree; not even considering flaws in their argument which would make it moot.

Using reddit is a mistake for the following reasons:
1. It's controlled by (((them))), more specifically Conde Naste, they're a PR firm who works with fifth column entities primarily to keep consumers dumb, scared, and horny [perfect condition for advertising targets].
2. If you get into any real discussion on Reddit, you run, very quickly into mod taint. A professional subreddit infiltrator will attempt to gain mod position. Even if you are willing to fight this off for wider exposure as r/T_D was, you come out of the whole thing doubtful and retarded, as designed.
3. Duterte is fighting the very people who handle the handlers of reddit moderators, those same people handle the handlers in most corners of the internet. TRUST NO ONE, MEME EVERYTHING

Tricky question, since I don't think you can really apply the traditional right-left spectrum to Filipino politics. He got voted in by a broad group of voters, lower-middle class, working class people, as well as regional parties and sectoral votes. The technocrats, liberals and big names in the political establishment were against him.

There wasn't really any other logical choices back then. To be honest, look for "Philippines", "Mindanao" and "Marawi" on google and sort through the newest posts.
Twitter is good for videos and pics.

> 3. Any nice maps of control

The problem with the maps currently is, that there is a media blackout and you wont get a lot of information.

Well, it's an old tactic, they sue for peace, rebuild strength, bait the government into an engagement, then peace talks, and the cycle starts again.

What's happened in the past decade or so was that the bigger groups just splintered more and more, so even though the bulk of the big groups just went on with their lives, ASG and Maute have a small dedicated core that can fuck things up given the chance.

Most ASEAN terrorist are tightly connected.

the last recent Mamasapano massacre happened because american government wants to covertly liquidate Marwan, a renowned malaysian Muhajiden teaching philippine terrorist how to make bombs, only to massively fail because our government sent fucking Urban SAFs to do a fucking jungle warfare. and one of the defense secretaries leaked the conversation in the media because they don't want to be implicated. And to add to that, I think I remember that the reason why the army didn't send the soldiers to do the liquidation is because the government is in an intermittent ceasefire with the rebels because Pnoy is pushing for the passing of BBL (Bangsamoro Basic Law).

From what I heard, If Pnoy pushed this agenda, he'll get a complimentary Nobel peace price and that's how it went and the BBL fell through the congress with just 3 congressmen attending the hearing.

I voted for Miriam Santiago, Duterte even vouched for her saying "If you don't want to vote for me, vote for her." To be honest she was the best actual choice to run the country.
>>
>>127221068
Was supposed to vote for Mirriam but when I know she has a stage 4 lunc cancer is was just a proxy for bongbong's VP candidacy... I didn't vote.

>>

She was up against a CIA funded Ramos.
A few more years down the line and people just plain didn't like her because she was "tough".
She had it bad. And her firstborn son killed himself because he couldn't live up to her legacy.
Then when we needed her the most she was on her way out.

That's a fuckton of things to explain.
The Liberal Party is composed of the richest politicians and backed by several corporations and oligarchs.

The Opposition comprises of the mostly right to center right politicians who's main selling point that they are "for the people." Also political clans who rivals to those allied with the liberal party

Then there are the Party List. Basically alliances of congressmen and activist groups. Most of them are simple rabble rousers and support groups for certain politicians or a legal front for rebel groups, like the CPP-NPA which is the political wing of the Communist.
>>
>>127225947
As he said himself, he is not that smart and was lucky enough to get passing scores in college. He has hired smarter people who are good in business and economics for his economic policies and he focuses on Safety most of the time.

Just look at Davao (he was mayor for 20 years). That city was crawling with communists and criminals before he took power. Now it is probably the richest and safest city in Mindanao. He threatens companies/people that do harm to the city or do not cooperate to improve it. Very liberal when it comes to business as long as it is not degenerate

>>
>>127225449
Filipino parties here pretty much a moot point since most politicians doesn't really have a political ideology per se.

When Liberal party won last 2010, most politicians jumped to the liberal party boat. Same thing Happened when Dutdut won along with PDP laban.

He's supposed to run with a socialist party back then but he found out how retarded they are he diched the idea.
>>

Duterte is surprisingly good on diplomacy and making new contacts and friends. Very pragmatic and more of a hand on president when it comes to security and order. He is also advocating bureaucratic reforms. He's not so good on the economical aspect of governance, he lets his cabinet take care of that.

Miriam had she won, would have made a lot of economic and social reforms that would no doubt piss the top players. She would have also cracked down on government corruption.

I just hope after Duts is done cleaning up, he would focus more on building and reorganizing infrastructure and agriculture in the country.
>>
>>127206224
I don't even know who your president is and even if I did, I doubt they'll be as effective as Duterte.
>>
>>127226974
/sg/ is good fun, but I also joined late so it just feels like too much catch up work unless you're there every day.

>>127227046
Duterte sounds, in a way, like what I was hoping Trump would be - focuses on his strengths, doesn't make too many blunders.
>>
>>127226644
They do not stick to the right or left of the political spectrum. Both sides would lean on whichever side would support their current stance.

This are businessmen, they only go for what's good for them.
>>
>>127226915
Most policies are geared towards protectionism when it comes to local resources and leans toward westernized policies of liberalism for the criminal code if I'm not mistaken.

That's the reason why foreign companies can't get a foothold here wihtout having a filipino proxies, hence empowering the oligarchs even more.

Duterte has a more broad approach to foreign policies as he wanted to be friends with everyone.
>>
>>127227046
>I just hope after Duts is done cleaning up, he would focus more on building and reorganizing infrastructure and agriculture in the country.
Here in mindanao there are fuck tons of road work being done and repairs to roads and bridges as well. IDK if it is the same in Visayas and Luzon.
>>
>>127226915
Personal monetary issues more like. The level of corruption and deceit in this country is ludicrous. We're lucky they have the brains to know that developing the country would bring in more cash for them in the long run.
>>
>>127227391
I think that Duterte's foreign policy is pretty good - as long as you don't hurt Filipino interests, he seems to be willing to get along with everybody.

I don't think she actually does anything important. She just got voted like Cory did, people believing she'll be like her dead husband. That and most likely manipulated votes.

He wants to lessen the grip of the oligarchs here by harboring foreign competition as those oligarchs are giving subpar services plastered with an overpriced tags.

He firmly believes that open competition is good for the economy but urges flips to study more because I think he knew everything will inflate down the road.

>What does the Filipino media think of him?

China puppet, dictator, murderer who sponsored so-called extrajudicial executions in his anti-drug campaign.

Media have some beef with Duterte, and vice versa. Any news about the president you take with a grain of salt, since it's always slanted against him. Even minor issues like the crass jokes he makes, they make it seem like it's something majorly offensive, and ignore 99% of what he said about an issue that made sense, or what he explained in a coherent manner.

Not only that, they frequently bait him with nonsensical questions, which he answers clearly, and twist his answers in a way that it makes him disagreeable.
