The weapons are flimsy as hell and they wear armour, which is why the weapons have no actual effect except as grappling tools or to annoy people.
They have weight limits for the weapons.

The armour is good and the weapons are very light, it's really not nearly as bad as it looks and the weapons are mostly for show, which is why the succesful teams actually don't use them much.
If they'd be hit by actual 2 handed swords on their arms the armour wouldn't keep them from being affected like that.

Stabbing isn't allowed afaik, the weapons are way too light to smash anything with due to weightlimits and the armour is relatively thick.
The weapons do literally nothing if you use them as the weapons they are supposed to look like.

Martial arts evolved to ranged strategy and shit. You can be good with a sword, but a crossbow will fuck you and your armor up. Bayonets are still used though, and nowadays the military still train with unarmed/armed combat.
Flails and halberds are GOAT tho, fuck swordfags.
