In this case with Gianforte, it is a special election which means there is no incumbent. Incumbency is a huge advantage and a lot of these Reps and Senators keep their seats for so long because of that advantage. Regarding the governor's race. Memes aside Gianforte had some good policy ideas, spent a shitload of money, and still lost. It was within 4% in a state Trump carried by 20%. Gianforte's decision to keep Trump at an arm's length was poor. All he would have had to do was appear onstage with Trump, but he was too dumb.

As for Bernie in the primaries he did beat Hillary (see 86% White), but it was also an open primary near the end of the primary season. Take that as you will.

Data in this state is so damn poor that it would be hard to call it beforehand. We'll see how it turns out soon.
