Because NEETs are losers who barely make 9k a year. Call me a normie or whatever, but I have things and people that I love and that costs money, not to mention I actually like the sense of self-accomplishment. Every time i browse these NEET posts, I look for any proof of these NEETs becoming something greater than me, but never do I find a single fit, educated, intelligent, or financially well off person, I just find some bitter man who may or may not have the right to be angry at the world. I won't judge you because were just two guys who browse some Korean comic strip website, but there is no way in hell i'm going to sit here and act like NEETs give some sort of profound wisdom and that I'm missing out on something.

First of all, I don't have to pay a dime.

And yes, you are right, you can learn alone. But university/college does much more than just teach you shit.

1) It tells you WHAT to learn, which path to follow. Those calculus and linear algebra courses the freshmen hate... turns out, 4 years later they find out how fucking important they are (we are talking computer science here, in most other engineering and science majors they are obviously important right away).

2) It provides you with feedback. Feedback is immensely important when learning. When learning solo, you can very easily misunderstand something and have that mistake ingrained for a very long time, building up on it. Similarly, sometimes you can miss some connections which may be obvious to experts but not to you.

3) Connections. If you are ever going to aspire to become a researcher, there is no way you can do it without being a member of the community. Unless you are a Shinichi Mochizuki god-tier creature.

Academia is about much more than just getting your degree in order to get a better-paying job.

This might sound strange to an uneducatedfag, but there are many branches of CS which actually classify as science, not engineering.

Combinatorial optimization, complexity theory, game theory..

Besides, that's just playing with words. And even if it didn't apply to CS (which it does), the whole statement is still true.
