There's a lot hidden under the veneer in these communities. I still prefer rural life but there are some downsides.The lower class criminals aren't niggers but they are white trash. We use the term "scums" for these people and it's basically analogous to nigger. There are substance abuse and alcoholism problems that aren't as obvious as they appear. Lots and lots of functional alcoholics and they drive everywhere because there isn't any public transportation.
On the other side, the schools are better and way whiter. We don't have murders, the last one was a decade ago. Property taxes are low and there's no traffic.

My gf used to work in New Jersey schools, before she moved out here to PA. New Jersey has the highest property taxes and highest population density in the country. One would think that these two factors would combine to provide the best funded and best performing schools. Yet she always had horror stories about crowded classrooms in chaos, fights, students disrespecting teachers, and academic failure.
Then she moved out here to central PA, still working in schools, but no more horror stories. Instead it has been pleasant tales about what a difference it's been to work with diligent and honest students and caring, invested teachers. This, despite less available funding in the form of property taxes.
The sad thing is, she is willing to describe the demographic differences between the NJ school and the PA school (100% black vs 99% white), articulate the cultural differences between the demographic groups (dancing and singing in classroom, focus on expensive and "showy" luxuries like smartphones, shoes and weaves, the nearly complete absence of fathers) but will not acknowledge that these factors might play a role in why one school is utter bedlam and underachieving, while the other is peaceful and academically successful.

Small towns have an actual sense of community. You know the people around you. You talk to the people around you. The heightened sense of community increases social cohesion. This leads to people that will work together to produce a better community. Thus leading to nice communities. Humans were made for small towns, they work best when they have community. Also most small towns don't have waves of minorities that destroy social cohesion and drag down the community through crime. It is possible to create a comfy city but that gets harder the larger the scale. It would only work with a strong effort, limiting social corrosion, limiting excessive diversity, splitting of the city into sub communities and creating structures that foster community(ie: churches or community centers).

It's been happening for years. What used to be a "back road" on the other side of those woods I can now hear traffic on in the middle of the night. This area has become "trendy" for rich people to live and has probably doubled in the # of houses in the past ten years. The only thing nice I can say about the neighborhoods is they are keeping a lot of trees up to try to keep the 'small town charm' I guess. Either way, I still have my view and privacy.

A few things are keeping the area around me from getting sprawled

1. 10 of those acres are mine
2. An old farm (the only building I can see) that legally (for now) can't be developed
3. A 1,500 acre nature reserve is nearby
4. It's hilly as fuck
