It might be the Leo 2A4 they are using, but a lot of it is upgraded internally, so for training purposes it is pretty comparable to the 2A6. The 2A7 is still in testing and very limited operations, so it is not used in trainings.

Until recently, we had pulled all our heavy armor units out of Europe. We were down to the 2nd Cav (Stryker), and the 173rd Airborne out of Vincenza, Italy.

The other problem is a slight erosion of high end tank crew skills across the Army. Our armor units have been largely leaving the tanks home for years and deploying in MRAPs and MATVs since the Abrams was just the wrong tool for the job. Multiply that by years, and people forget how to do things. No difference from not picking up a guitar for six months.

As an example, my younger brother was an armor officer for five years, 2009-15. Deployed twice, left the tanks home both times. He did approximately three months of real tank work after the officer's course.

This is the same reason the Ranger Training Brigade won the Best Ranger Competition like five years in a row. They had guys that all they did was train for competition while the rest of the community, especially the three battalions, were out shooting people.

Actually, it involves shooting at moving fake tanks in a battlefield with life ammunition. Those fake tanks are essentially old RC driven trucks and SUVs made to look like tank targets. But they are not just sitting there, but actually moving like real opposing tanks. It is a big thrill really.

I have seen such a training in Austria once, i.e. a mock tank battle. They did not use live ammo but only that ammo which is loud without projectiles... but it was still awesome to see a fake tank battle going on for I think 15 min or so.

Every tank past the Panther IV was extremely expensive unreliable and impossible to maintain in the field. One of the worst military decisions made by the Nazis was doing anything more than building a shit load of panzer IVs with upgraded high velocity guns.

Also that's a flat lie if you look it up as well. The only disadvantage the Iraqi tanks had was a lack of advanced nightvision. The guns and armor where up to par with Russian tanks. And there's dozens of examples in 91 of Abrams taking multiple direct hits from T72s. My favorite example being an Abrams took out 8 T72s at point blank engagement range during the day.

There are top attack missiles, cage/net armor pretty impractical way to protect roof of tank with hatches, sensors, antennae and shieet. It is pretty hard to armor tank all around, weight is kinda limiting.

Air warfare has now reached point where coalition aircraft has destroyed Libyan and ISIS armor and bunkers with laser guided concrete training bombs. 250kg or 500kg of anything dropped from sufficient altitude fucks up a lot of things, including every tank ever made for good. Essentially no collateral damage.

They work because most of RPG ammo is old and have only simple fuses and warhead is optimized for contact explosion. If it hits on a bar, bit of extra metal to penetrate and ruined standoff distance for warhead against main armor. If it hits between bars without fuse contact, warhead will be crushed into potato before it explodes.

Net armor does that ruining standoff distance at fraction of weight and overall bulk to transport, but that usually relies even more on enemy using obsolete munitions.

The Pz3 was too small to mount turrets capable of housing bigger guns, and the Pz4 chassis had reached the end of it's service life, the suspension couldn't handle any more weight.

Arguably the Panther was too heavy and needed too many resources but 3 and 4 needed a more modern replacement.
