They're actually using very new advances in high temperature superconducting magnets to shrink the size of a tokamak, which previously has had to swell to great size because of the plasma geometry involved.

The first molten salt reactor was built in the 60s nearly from scratch for 80 million dollars adjusted for inflation, it ran for 5 years without fault, it was the worlds first gen3++ reactor yet so few knew of it. We can have generation 4 fission that is 100% safe, uses a much more plentiful source of fuel, is anti-proliferation, can burn up spent fuel/'waste', can desalinate water and provide carbon neutral electricity within 3-5 years if the investment and awareness was there. Consequently the UK is looking towards gen4 designs like MSRs in a serious light and whilst fusion has huge implications for humanity fission to the standard of MSRs is do able right now today and could grant any nation full energy independence whilst greatly reducing the cost of energy.

If I learned one thing is to say never say never. Specialists in their fields said "never" to so many things in the past. But for fusion, we got a big example of working fusion during the day and our current reactors work as in they have a working reaction going on.
We "just" need to find a way to stabilize that reaction w/o dumping so much energy into it, but instead get a positive energy flow out of it after it started up.
Also, 2 years or so back, one testreactor reached a positive netflow after the startup. It couldnt hold that for very long though and the amount was small but it was positive.
Still, it needed more energy overall, for the startup, then it outputted in the end. The important thing here is that it didnt need so much energy during the running phase as it produced.

Though ,of course, that could also have been a PR stunt for the MSM.
