What I mean is that smoking stops being the norm for you. It stops being a habit that you just default to without even thinking. That happens quickly. Once that habit is broken, the rest is just self-control, mindfulness and discipline.

Again, speak for yourself. I've got jobs out of things I've learned online and I'm able to hold my own in conversations or debates on all sorts of subjects. I've travelled to obscure places after researching them online. I've met some amazing people through forums on specific hobbies etc.

And I have a perfectly fine sleeping pattern, I'm fit and healthy, I have a good social life. If you're spending 12 hours a day on the internet, that's an issue. If you use it for a couple of hours in the evening instead of watching TV or doing fuck all, you're able to better yourself.

If you think about how "movements" started a thousand years ago, or even a hundred years ago, they were relatively similar, where as now they're completely different.

It's the ease of access that fuck us,compared to the past. Thirty years ago, if you wanted to learn about transistors, say, you'd go to the library and get a book about them. You'd bring it home, open it up and sit and read it. And without any distraction - no FB, no Whatsapp, no email, no posting on here, no looking other shit up when you get distracted - there was a real likelihood, if you were interested in the subject, that you'd get a solid, hardcore, uninterrupted, "where did the time go?" two hour study session on transistors.

What you mostly get now is people will Google "transistors", read half the Wiki page on them, then maybe click on the link to "semiconductors" and read half of that, all whilst checking their FB and theri text messages and shitposting on here and then you ask them the next day what they did and they say "I learned all about transistors". I watched a documentary about William Thomson, Lord Kelvin - he of Kelvin scale fame - and he was a fucking machine. He would get up at about 6, have some breakfast, exercise, study until around 9, go to work at the uni teaching physics etc., come home at around 5, eat dinner, study until 11 or some shit and then go to bed. Rinse, repeat. And that's ALL he did. Constantly. Every day. And he didn't have the internet.

Do we see people nowadays doing that sort of shit? Do we fuck, even though they have access to the entirety of the world's knowledge.

Often times they'd probably be so bored they would read the book over and over and over. Then they'd think about it without distraction. Even if now someone reads a book the same, they'll be so distracted by everything else available. TV, movies, technology, just the way society is right now is not exactly a good place for focus and education really

That said, textbooks in established sciences are all much-of-a-muchness but are people downloading and working their way through elementary physics textbooks ro teaching themselves organic chemistry? The internet has made learning easier, that's inarguable.

Most people would never, ever get a book about, say, the monarchy. But they can simply read through a few wikipedia pages and get a half decent understanding. If they find it interesting they can research further and find pretty much all the information they could ever need/want online.
