You know, I'm not sure what generation anyone is. Boomers? Okay, that's at least a starting point. But everything after is a jumble, and some boomers are a decade older than my mom and she was born in 54, so is she a boomer? I don't what I am either. Born 78 so am I Gen X or Y or Millenium or some other bullshit dreamt up by marketing Jews.

Plus, really, we're old enough to remember how it was and know how it is now. And we see nothing much ahead of us. If we're not set now, we just won't be ever. I blame the rise of the internet and subsequent amount of knowledge that is actively transported through it. Comforting truths are dead.
At one point you would've been confined to whatever a friend says on the phone, in person, or possibly written in a book or newspaper. Now you can see the thoughts and opinions of anyone from around the world as well as knowledge that they have parsed together. This leads to the eventual destruction of comforting truths and reveals the raw intensity, ambiguity, and harsh reality of life. It's this overflow of information that can be very difficult to handle and which I personally believe has at least SOME effect on rising suicide rates.

Gen X was stuck in the middle of boomer bullshit—Early Boomers were the shitty 60s/70s hippies, late Boomers became the fucking yuppies of the 80s.

Most of Gen X had parents from the Silent Generation, the people who grew up at the end of the Great Depression but were mostly too young to be drafted for WWII.

They taught us to be frugal, and sensible. Keep your head down and work hard.

But we ended up watching society crumble during our childhood.
Some of us got a few years that were similar to what you’d imagine growing up in the 50s would be like: Watching Andy Griffith and Leave it to Beaver reruns on TV, playing with other kids till dark, family and neighborhood picnics, riding bicycles, shooting at tin cans, leaving Christmas presents in mailbox for the mailman.

And then it all went away. The energy crisis. Stranger Danger. The Iran hostage crisis. The Cold War intensifying. Watching Reagan shot on TV, over and over and over. Feminists bitching louder and louder. The War on Drugs. Divorce rates skyrocketing.

We did get to watch technology begin to transform the world.
I had a pager in 1991. It cost $50 a month. A friend of mine had a cel phone. It weighed 8lbs.

There are very few Gen X in politics, because the Boomers hold on to everything until they suck the life out of it.
Plus, most of us just don’t give a shit anymore. We gave up and became nihilists because our generation was too small to really do shit.

My Grandfather was a mechanic and I learned basic auto repair from being around him. By 12, I was doing oil changes, simple tune-ups, and radiator flushes for my neighbors. When I was 14, we moved to the mountains and I found work as a ranch hand--building fence, herding cattle, slopping pigs, shoveling manure, repairing barns. Learned how to tie flies and sold them to local shops.

When I went to college, I had $8000 saved ($16,737.05 in 2017 money).
Didn’t spend most of it, because I got a part time job as a flagman for road construction.
Second year of school, I got an internship at a print shop; took a pay cut from $12 to $5 an hour, but learned customer service, business accounting, and how to run a printing press.

Since then I’ve been a pressman, delivery driver, layout artist, graphic designer, a QA tech, a bouncer, a journeyman electrician, a network admin, an IT director, an apprentice plumber, a bartender, a nightclub manager, and now own a small ISP.

I'm also 22, and flunked out a couple years ago. Took a year off, told everyone I'd get a job but spent most of it as a NEET. Being a NEET was the worst experience I've ever had, I was miserable constantly and felt like I was wasting my life away. I never had anxiety in high school or that first year of college but it built up a ton in just that one year of being a NEET, and it still hasn't fully gone away.
I went back to college and my grades are still shit but I got things back up to a C average, I have a summer job and I'm going to make just enough to pay for next year most likely. I spend too much time online still and haven't spoken to any high school friends in years, but I feel like I'm crawling out of the hole I'm in. I feel like shit sometimes but I'm in a better place than I was two years ago, and I haven't felt like killing myself in a while. Hopefully next semester at university I won't stay cooped up in my dorm and will force myself to try socializing a bit and finding like-minded individuals, which will hopefully help calm my anxiety even more.

Honestly I say just get back on the horse and do something. Education, work, just something that betters yourself in some way. Maybe get /fit/, I haven't done it yet but I hear that really boosts your confidence.

Started working at 16. Mid 40s and have been working for something like 22 years solid plus 3 years military and 6 months deployment.
