I work in Finance. We've known about a credit bubble in China for years now. The chinese banks have been selling wealth management products that are essentially derivatives to different things like commodities or an index etc... they payoff the old products with new product sales. It works just like a ponzi scheme. Of course this shit was going to blow up.
>>
>>126074782
It means the US treasury could get wrecked as china dumps all the US debt it holds into the market to bail itself out. China may start slashing its currency. Also expect most commodities and materials prices to plunge except for precious metals will probably be ok.
>>
>>126075297
They're derivatives but they problem is how popular they are, how shittily they are sold with the bankers telling people they basically can't go down and the fact that they are paying off old ones with the sales of new ones like a ponzi scheme. This has been going on for years. I think I first read about this in Grant's in 2015.

China has either been lying about their current gold reserve or they've been lying about how they are obtaining it. They've been saying they are mining it in china, but when you look at the speed their reserve increased versus the actual speed it can be mined it's impossible they have done it all themselves. which means they've either purchased it off the open market or are lying. I've heard stories that chinese miners have been told to purchase the gold off of global markets and pretend like they mined it so that might be the case.

Silver is likely to go up faster than gold from a slowdown in china anyway. 70% of silver is mined as an adjunct to industrial metals. Only 30% comes from mines that are solely designed for silver. China is the largest user of industrial metals in the world. As the prices for industrial metals like iron copper etc... fall the production from those mines will fall as well which will lower the production of silver of which demand could be higher because of the looming economic problems. Silver will have supply shrink while demand increases. Gold will only have demand increase. The rate at which it's being mined will probably stay the same or increase slightly.

Lysglimt, on the other hand, is what he has always been, a Ron Paul tier libertarian. His past shows quite well what kind of guy he is, an honest one. The fictional story of China I often read is that of 7% annual GDP growth, fast rising wages, and growing middle class consumerism underpinning so many corporations growth and revenue estimates. However, the non-fiction reality is a different story all together. That of Chinese credit growth quadrupling since '07 as the primary trigger for the doubling of wages and tripling of GDP over that period.

A quick review from 2000 should help offer some perspective:

>00-->'07 global credit grew $55 T (China was up $5 T or 9% of the global total). Chinese core pop grew by 120 million (9.5% increase vs. China's '00 total population). China wages rose 2.3x's, GDP 2.9x's. China represented 30% of global growth in oil consumption.
>08-->'14 global credit grew $57 T (China credit grew by $21 T or 37% of global credit growth). China's core population rose 42 million (3% increase vs. China total '08 population). China wages rose 2x's, GDP 2.9x's. China represented 56% of global growth in oil consumption.
>15-->'21 China's core population will fall an est. <-11m> (or a -1% decline vs. China total population and the decline will only accelerate thereafter).

To maintain China's GDP and wage growth in the '15-->'21 period, particularly as global exports are decelerating and China's core population is shrinking, China will likely need to quadruple its credit base again. This would be no easy fete as this would equate to an increase of $84 trillion or $12 trillion a year!

The gazillion dollar question is if China's core population is sure to decline, and China credit isn't likely to quadruple again (again, that would be $84 t or $12 trillion/yr over the next 7 years); how likely is China's wage and GDP growth to maintain its pace over this next 7 year period??? China's rise of oil consumption? China's shopping mall bonanza? China's housing surplus? China's role as pre-eminent driver of global growth...or any growth (period) in China??? Or perhaps contraction is the most likely outcome and the implications for commodities to consumer goods will be decelerations and/or contractions for oil, steel, apple iPhones. You name it and growth of Chinese demand is set to collapse (not necessarily demand itself, but growth in Chinese demand at anything resembling the past 15 years is highly dubious).

Image: Chinese total GDP, total Credit, PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) of per capita earnings, juxtaposed with decelerating annual core (15-64yr/old) population growth. Plainly, credit growth was substituted for decelerating population growth to maintain overall growth.

ZH never comes through...
Big if true though
>>
How is this a bad thing for America if China fails?
>>
CHINA'S DEMOGRAPHICS

China's 0-64yr/old population will shrink for decades (chart below)...despite China's politically implemented one child policy, nearly all nations that have moved from high to low birth rates have been unable to revert back to higher birth rates. This is true across the EU where nation upon nation have unsuccessfully offered incentives of all sorts to increase birth rates. The story in Asia is the same in Japan, Taiwan, S. Korea, and China all seeing significantly negative birth rates...and Asia (incl. India) in total has fallen from 5.8 in 1950 to 2.1 children per female of child bearing age as of 2015...and still falling. China's softening of its one child policy a couple years ago and outright abandonment now are likely to have little, if any, impact on this. And China's net emigration isn't likely to reverse itself...but probably more plausible than birth rates rising significantly.

CHINA'S SHOPPING MALLS

From '14-'16 China is building 65% of all new global retail space...nearly doubling existing shopping mall square meters within China...all while China online shopping is growing by leaps and bounds and China's shopping population is now declining. The same story goes for growth in China skyscrapers, growth in China office space, and massive infrastructure growth for a declining under 65yr/old population?!?

CHINA HOUSING SURPLUS

Again, in a nation faced with decades of a shrinking 0-64yr/old population (representing fewer potential buyers every year)...a massive overhang of 50 to 100 million vacant housing units (primarily high end units) seems about the worst possible scenario.

No. It will be bad though. Definitely a recession in china and maybe some other emerging markets as their economies rely heavily on selling natural resources and china is the largest producer of natural resources. Canada might get fucked too given that their real estate bubble could be attributed to chinese buying tons of real estate in canada. There maybe some additional global fallout as well economically, but it won't be the end.

No friend
We're not living in one of the biggest housing bubbles ever devised in mankind history.

China literally builds cities that have nobody in them.

China's government also lacks the funds at this point to buy all of their assets in the case of a massive collapse.

America is going to eat shit, too. But we would literally see riots and unrest in the streets of Bejing if this bubble pops instead of deflates. As in people-eating-one-another-to-survive anarchy

The Federal reserve was literally set up in response to JP Morgan. During the financial crises of 1907s JP Morgan bullied other bankers to bail out the United States banking system which began to fail as a few banks already started to fail. Congress didn't like that a few bankers could have such a large impact on the american economy so they created the Fed so they could have better control over the banking system instead of JP morgan being the one behind the reins. The fed might have grown into a monstrosity since then but it wasnt created by jp morgan.

By the way, I remember being in China a few years back and hearing various Chinese colleagues and girlfriends of friends telling me about how their families were all investing their money being promised very high returns.

>they all love the concept of interest because it sounds sophisticated as fuck to them, justifies their being penny pinching hoarders and also is money for nothing... basically everything a Chinaman wants from life

I had conversations where I basically said "there's no way you're being offered 8% year on year - you aren't big enough to get that sort of deal" and they insisted, time and again, that that was that they offered. The first 5 or so times I just assumed it was Chinese people lie-bragging like they always do but eventually I was convinced that people are signing these contracts with "financial agents" (i.e. shadow bankers) many of which they have been introduced to - funnily enough - by actual state bank employees to give them legitimacy. "Middle class" Chinese people locking a good chunk of their savings in to "wealth management products". I even knew a few of the dumber expats buying in to it too.
>and hearing some expats say "some people get rich via Ponzi schemes and I plan to get out in time"
No wonder the fucking globalists love China, hey?

Meanwhile their entire middle class's paper wealth is backed up by nothing at all but insanely overvalued, empty crumbling apartment blocks that nobody wants to live in.

I've never invested in diamonds so I couldn't tell you much about them.
I do like having precious metals as a hedge on the portfolio and I normally hate them but it feels right.
GE is ok. It's probably fairly valued or slightly undervalued.
If you own the S&P in a retirement account and are regularly saving in it staying put and saving more when it goes down is probably the best thing to do. It's really hard if not impossible to time the market perfectly and if you aren't planning on using the money until 20 years from now it won't matter. Just stay the course and save as much as you can during the dips.
Maybe move some from the S&P to emerging markets after china melts down as they have the best long term prospects over the next 15-20 years for sure if that's your time horizon.

If you're thinking your time horizon is the next 5 years then pump the brakes a bit and move into more conservative investments. Not necessarily gold, but maybe a little. Maybe just cash and short term debt instruments that are investment grade.
>>
>>126099374
Since we started with data on the S&P in the early 1900s there hasn't been a 15 year period where it has not ended higher than it began and that includes the great depression. If your time horizon is long and you are saving regularly just up your savings during the dips and don't worry about it.

Because if current trends are maintained China will likely have the world's largest G.D.P. within 15-20 years. They already have the world's largest P.P.P., but when you're measuring the comparative wealth of nations as a whole, G.D.P. is a better metric. This is especially true when one country is developed and one isn't, as P.P.P. will always favor developing countries.

But I digress. China will probably be the leading economic power within a couple decades, and China is a fucking shitshow so that wouldn't bode well for the world.

You can't really demand payment for a bond that isn't due yet, but you can sell the debt to someone else.
When we buy tankers full of shit for walmart, the Chinese shippers are not paid in cash, they are paid in US Treasury notes. This is partly what makes up "muh 20 Trillion".
Supposedly, China doesn't want to be paid in these bonds anymore, so that could be bad.
>good podcast, check out goldenjackass.com
>>
>>126106299
So the US gave China millions of bonds in exchange for [Value] money? Fuck, I wish people actually ran the government like a fucking business. I hate liberals always saying that the government shouldn't be run like a business because there are people in it. Well, if the government were small and in no involved in social issues this would not be a problem.

It means selling ownership of the debt to some schmuck.

What this guy said: >>126106567
It basically means said schmuck can try to squeeze blood from a rock when the wealth the debt (a promise to pay at a later date) was based on is long gone.
Fair warning: I'm economically illiterate, but even I understood that much.

>>126106567
>Supposedly, China doesn't want to be paid in these bonds anymore, so that could be bad.
Definitely not a good sign, the whole concept of fiat currency is based on confidence from what little I know.
>>

Thanks m8, any recommended episode? Are they high level stock trader talk or is it more easy on newcomers? I tried listening to this interview with Peter Schif and a chink, it was like they were talking german
>yes but what about the negative dividends of international stock trading companies
>well, it's not about the dividends but about the futures and forex markets because if the futures were to default then the ROI value of their stock holdings would collapse and quickly rise again creating a dead cat bounce which would trigger an increase in government bonds.
>hmm, of course.
What.

So like investing on food that goes bad, or flipping a house for 50% less of what you borrowed... Hmm
>>
>>126105625
Over supply of bonds drives the price down, suddenly US debt isn't worth much meaning high interest and yields so the US can continue taking out loans.

Yes, the problem I see is when they issue more than they make in taxes, a deficit. You can't run a credit card every month for 10,000 when you only make 2000 a month. It's unsustainable.

The nature of the dollar is that it is introduced to the economy at interest. The bills you have in your wallet only exist because they were issued in exchange for bonds. You're straying into a complex issue that household budget running doesn't really apply to.

Slightly off topic here, but I feel like we need more fundamental economics and civics threads on /pol/.
Amerinons clearly aren't getting even a basic level of education on these subjects, yet we have the right to vote in federal elections.
We could seriously benefit from basic links used as required reading in the already present, and largely useless, sticky thread.
