A combination of things;

>A hyper-partisan population which labels anyone who disagrees with them as "fake"
>News media adapting to the rapid pace of the Internet, resulting in stories being pumped out with little/no substance or fact checking
>free medium of the Internet has allowed anyone to become an "expert", resulting in conspiracy tards reaching a wider audience and being able to bunker down in echo chambers

The three biggest issues all coverge into one shitshow. You have major corporations like CNN, Fox News, etc. who are in an extremely competitive environment, and will lose money if their reporting isn't immediate. Because of this, stories are occasionally embellished or wrong. People see this as "lying media", and will turn to "alternative news" such as Alex Jones or Drudge. Whereas major media will not necessarily put out confirmation biased stories, that it literally all you'll see on a far-right or far-left website. So you've got this mixture of people distrusting the media due to real/perceived inaccuracies, and a willing competitor that will tell the consumer that they are right and their conspiracies are founded.

Because people are being told they're right, they're less likely to fact-check. So you get retards posting the most insane conspiracy theories, and as long as you are charming enough, you will get views.

This is absolutely not helpd in American politics where you have a President who openly attacks the media, and a fervent support base who will accept any word he says. It just speeds up the issue.

Because the media has an entire history of spinning and or outright lying.

This is probably the biggest reason why trust in media is dropping like a rock. We expect news like "2 SCOOPS FOR DHANALD" to be some facebook story shared by old women, not a breaking news from a billion dollar corporate entity. It is getting to the point where the news is legitimately getting suspects in mass murder cases wrong and ruining people's lives before a few seconds later changing it and not even giving an apology.

If the news wishes to survive, they have to drop the 80's-90's style 24 hour news and go back to the time when the news was slow, but much more informed. Make people get the billion dollar news that they deserve rather than the 4chan happening thread level quality it is now

This will never happen though, precisely because of how fast our society moves in terms of communication. Buzzfeed is successful (and consequently, very vapid) because of this.

I can't recall the exact documentary, but it looked into the inner workings of the company, and how they track buzzwords, trends, etc. and then pump out tons of content based on it. Why put massive amounts of effort into one project when you can put shit effort into a dozen? A dozen articles have more chance of one becoming viral. Viral content = traffic = advertiser revenue and product sales.

My take on it is that mainstream media tends to have a slant, they have a way of writing journalism in the style of an opinion piece to guide peoples' perceptions and opinions. That is disingenuous. "Lying by omission" is a problem.

But mainstream media outlets do have very strict standards for fact-checking. When it's proven that they've lied or reported something incorrectly, it's a big fucking deal, and people lose their jobs over it. They might try to sneakily tell you how you're supposed to feel about the facts, but the facts themselves are generally true.

Shit's confusing right now because there are so many blogs & small, individually run news outlets that do not abide by the same standards, and the Internet puts them all on the same playing field with little distinction between them. It's satisfying to read the news from the perspective of a writer who shares your worldview, and when that worldview has been deliberately squeezed out from mainstream media, you turn to the little guys who speak directly to an under-served market.

Which is good and fine, except when these two sides start reporting a completely different set of facts... so I hold the mainstream media at fault for restricting themselves too much to a one-sided political viewpoint, but I think all these little bloggers & non-mainstream reporters are also at fault for not checking their facts carefully enough. They don't have the backing of a mainstream news outlet to provide them with legitimacy, and if they start reporting in a way that leaves their base of readers angry or dissatisfied, they have nothing at all. So the incentive is obviously there to let their opinions & worldview guide their reporting, rather than the other way around.

tl;dr we no longer understand the distinction between "legitimate journalism" and "op-ed/opinion piece," and that is the root of the problem.

I and most others I know who feel similarly tend to just try to find the least obnoxious lügenpresse outlet we can, read/watch it sparingly and try to filter out the bullshit to get a big picture, then figure out the details for ourselves.
