Off the top of my head I know there's some areas in India that get them fairly regularly. Quick look at Wikipedia says

That's why it happens in spring, that's when those two airmasses are at peak difference with each other. The jet steams can get that air spinning and get it mixing together, and it becomes a self-feeding monster until the air stabilizes(usually from cooling due to nighttime) more.The storms themselves can also consume all the moisture/heat needed to fuel them and literally run out of fuel/energy.
