It's rare for a rich person who isn't completely new money (like a nigger who wins the lottery) to ever go broke. They usually get inside tips as well in regards to stocks, real estate deals (properties where developments might be happening in the future), or whatever else. No surprise that Suu Kyi came to power. Major uprisings happened in Myanmar 2006-2007. The government scheduled a constitutional referendum around that time with the intent of democratic reforms (actually held early 2008). Suu Kyi was a central political figure in Myanmar from ~late 1980s and obviously stood to gain from elections.

Also, no figure "came out of nowhere" to topple the military leaders in Myanmar.
