Also, to answer your question. On one hand, yes - lots of eastern european countries struggle with some shit, on the other, not all and not in the same areas. For example, Russia is pretty goddamn rich, but the standard of living is shit even by Polish standards because tons of cash are dumped into military, which is a shame because parts of it are pretty swell and would use more generous budget for infrastructure and whatnot. My country is doing pretty okay - we're developing and we managed to shield ourselves from refugees but we also have kinda shitty job market with no sensible welfare to support those who can't find any (though likely the same lack of welfare was one of contributing factors in beign spared refugee hordes).

I was in Czech Republic only for a very short bit while as a kid but I know that Ukraine still has pretty shitty situation in some regards but seems to be able to keep on trucking. Romania has very nice big cities but poor everything outside of them from what I know.

So in big part it depends what areas you visit. Having been also in Germany I don't think an average city here is worse, even if average citizen may be slightly more poor (but still able to get typical 1st world shit and issues).

The leftover communist architecture may contribute to the impression of shitholes though. Commies were very utilitarian in their building so you have plenty of still functional but godawful looking flats everywhere.

So, I'd say it's not bad. Our average unemployed dude won't be able to stroll in brand clothes and with newest smartphone like how west is portrayed but I am fine with that.

However, if you are a refugee we have to warn you that everything will be horrible the moment you'll come, evil blocker youth will beat you up and it will all seem like Fallout or STALKER setting then. Must mean Allah doesn't want you to move here and you should listen.
