I personally love it. It's basically a magical girls shonen/slice of life but with a male protagonist. Sometimes it approaches themes unconventionally and there's a good chunk of lore that's constantly teased but only slowly revealed

And that last point is basically it's biggest weakness, the show's arguably slow. It had a slow start, a lot of episodes are centered around, again, slice of life and comedy stuff so that puts off some people that would rather see the main plot develop more quickly. It doesn't help that the show is constantly on hiatus because of CN fuckery. The artstyle sometimes' inconsistent because different boarders

I'd say watch a bunch of S1 episodes and see if you like it. I barely remember the titles but i think you could start with Cat-fingers, Too many birthdays or Frybo

I just finished the third season. I went in fully expecting to absolutely loathe but it's actually decent.
It's far from perfect, the episodes are often too short to convey the stories properly, the episodes focused on the human cast are often a chore to sit through and sometimes it falls into shitty anime cliches. Also, the show's drama gets ridiculous at times, every single episode a character cries for whatever reason, it gets annoying. And most of the musical segments are just not good and they feel like a waste of time.

Having said all that, I think it's actually a pretty good show. The characters are great, the setting is interesting, it unravels the lore nicely, the songs that are good are genuinely good, it's pretty to look at with a nice aesthetic, it incorporates anime references nicely plenty of times, and it's in general a good show. It plays with gender stereotypes a bit and obviously the show sometimes deals with things like domestic abuse and social stigma and whatnot, but most of the time (not always), it does so in a way that's not too blatant and annoying and somewhat mature for a kid's show. It's probably one of the few cartoons out there where the female characters are actually written like real people (despite being aliens) with glaring character flaws.

If you are just looking to watch some pretty imagery with charming characters doing charming things then give Steven Universe a try.
Although avoid the fanbase because it's fucking shit.

Why they insist on using that model instead of just focusing on the space shit I'll never know, nobody cares about the townspeople.

See, this is an actual argument agaisnt the show, which is what that video doesn't do.
And I agree, most episodes that focus on the townspeople are trash, especially the Ronaldo or Lars episodes. I almost dropped it several times.
I think in general it's a problem with the show's attempts to be more like anime in that it puts up all those filler episodes which are supposed to develop the characters outside of the story but it doesn't manage to make these characters even remotely interesting.
But, again, if I didn't stick with the show, I would have never have gotten to the genuinely good episodes, and not all the filler episodes are trash, the ones that focus on Steven's relationship with the Gems are good for developing the character dynamics.
In general, the episodes that focus on Beach City and it's townspeople don't comprise the majority of the show, despite there being way too many of them and they are mostly the same.

I said as much and I'll say it again: SU is decent. It's watchable. It's pretty imagery with interesting characters. If you have the patience to sit through really half-assed episodes to get to the really great ones, then go for it. If you don't, you really aren't missing much. It's a 6/10 overall.
In fact I genuinely don't think the show deserves such a polarizing reception. It's not a fantastic cartoon but it's not terrible either.
I just don't think the show should be judged by the Tumblr fanbase.

You know I actually checked this show out when it started and it wasn't that bad, checked it out again later and it still wasn't that bad. Like not saying its good, just that the SJW stuff in it is was more overblown than it is. The show isn't particularly amazing, has a lot of filler, has musical episodes that some won't enjoy, and sometimes can't decide where it wants to go storywise. I don't give a fuck. I'm paranoid about subliminal messaging to youths but I know that this cartoon is only popular with 15 to 25 year olds. And I'm not so easily moulded by the media.

And at least it's blatant with what the show is about. Love is dominant, break social barriers and all that shit. It's trivial stuff. But the writing is top notch for what it is trying to do, the characters are brilliant and compelling.

Like take the dad for example. Every cartoon has the stupid fucking trope where the mom is the correct CE of reason and the dad is some dumb ass who makes bad decisions. Well Greg (the father) isnt like that, he only ironically looks like a dirt bag and yet he is the most caring, supportive and practical character in the show. He frequently asks Steven if he has any other interests, and despite winning a major check in royalties he never lost it all at once like the status quo tries to do, he splerged a bit and had fun but otherwise he kept the money for Steven.

The show is basically "don't judge a book by it's cover" and I know we like to generalise here so I won't say any more because this will only reach out to a few people but I high recommend this show for anyone above the brainwashed age.

Watched about two and a half hours of it to know more about it and I have to say that I have an even worse opinion than before.
What I hate about Steven Universe as a show is that it's barely even original. About 90% of everything in it is just something the creators ripped off from other series, usually Japanese anime or video games, and somehow this gives it a pass as well as praise. A lot of the stuff they rip off is just lifted wholesale too, like a lot of scenes are just exact reproductions of scenes from other shows frame for frame, just with the little amount of budget and quality western cartoons afford. The idea of there being a race of magical lifeforms with jewel-like cores is a complete ripoff of the Jumi from Legend of Mana, right down to them being named after these jewels as well as the race having conflict between internal parties and heirarchies where the Diamonds are at the top.
