I once loved John Lennon’s “Imagine” for its beauty and wistfulness. However, when I stopped to think critically about the song’s lyrics, I had a terrible realization. In recording “Imagine,” John Lennon was not just dreaming of a better world; Lennon, like many science fiction antagonists before him, was dreaming of a world completely free of individuality.


The tip-off was when I sang the song as part of a chorus in ninth grade. My choir director had decided to change the phrase "and no religion, too” to “and all religions, too.” When I asked him why, he gave me a very straight-forward answer. “Well, we can’t have no religion!” Religion, it seemed, was very important to him. “Wait,” I thought to myself. “isn't everything else that John Lennon mentions important too? What about countries and possessions? I like my country, and I like my possessions.”


This is when reality set in. I realized that “Imagine” must have come from the propaganda wing of SEELE, the secret organization whose goal is to merge all humans into a single entity. I’m kidding, of course. SEELE is a fictional organization from an anime that I hadn’t even watched yet at the time. Still, I saw “Imagine” as propaganda and my fellow choir members as sheeple, unable to see the truth about the song.

Later that same year, Glenn Beck lambasted Glee for indoctrinating the youth of America, using their cover of “Imagine” as evidence. He didn’t seem to understand that Glee was just a television program that covered popular songs, or that “Imagine” was a popular song long before Glee covered it. His embarrassing lack of research, along with his general reputation, made me want to disassociate myself from him by altering my own view of the song, which made sense to me as a fourteen year old. And so, I decided that “Imagine” was benign, and that I had merely been over-analyzing it.


However, in the time since making that decision, I have realized that I shouldn't change my opinions just because I don't like the other people who share them, and my view on "Imagine" has reverted to being a critical one. I also have a name for the ideology expressed by Lennon in his song; it is called communism. This ideology exists outside of science fiction, and there are some students on my own campus who subscribe to it. However, I do not hate “Imagine.” I merely hate the ideology that Lennon drew his inspiration from. In fact, I have learned to enjoy “Imagine” by constructing my own narrative for it. Musical buffs use the term “villain song” to describe a musical number used to introduce a villain or explain their motivations. “Imagine” is John Lennon’s villain song.


It is worth noting that, despite clearly favoring communism, Lennon was a successful capitalist. In court, the assassin who killed Lennon cited The Catcher in the Rye, a book written from the perspective of a man who is obsessed with hypocritical individuals, referred to within the text as “phonies.” I speculate that Lennon’s assassin was incensed by the hypocrisy inherent in a chart-topping song about the glory of communism.
