I think it is time for Canada and Canadians to stop attacking itself on Indigenous affairs, the first few decades of exploration and colonization of North America were marked by massacres on both sides. The drastic decrease in their population due to small pox is unfortunate but it also happened every where else in the world. Foreign diseases wiping out the population(i.e. The Plague, Spanish Flu and etc.). The reparations being paid towards FNMI are high. The funding for a single student in the reserves is 13,524 compared to 11,646 to public schools. Since 1950 there has been 822% increase in education funding for reserves and that does consider inflation. It also does not stop there, in 2013/2014 Health Canada spent 1.1 billion dollars on services for natives that aren't covered by the constitution or treaties. Services like dental, vision care and medications. Those services that have to be paid out of pocket for non-natives. Any income earned in the reserves is non-taxable and more than 35 Chiefs have "received" more than 100,000 annually without including special pay. Chief Giesbrecht of Kiwkwetlem was paid 914,219 in 2013, his reserve has a population of 82 people. That is tax payer dollar that could be going for things that could help the entire population, not a hand few of people. Canada has achieved the financial prosperity and success on the hard work of its immigrant population, people that moved here to create a better life for their families. We have all suffered through hardships and had set backs but most if us never had the privilege of receiving financial reparations for simply being born. How are the people that moved from all over the world to Canada, many without a knowledge of English or the culture, without a contact for help, with only a goal of a better life have managed to adapt and contribute to society at a higher level than those who have lives here their whole lives and pride themselves in being native ?
