I start by drawing out the basic shape on some thick cardboard, then cut it out very carefully with some tuff scissors. Once you're done, glue up the elements that appear in 3D using several materials (for example, bic pen tubes for barrels, tooth picks for other details) and some hot glue . Once that's over, paint it up using silver or gun metal acrylic paint for the metal, brown for the stock, etc.
