Do something simple, like a puppet show where Mario fights Bowser or something.

Where do you see a problem?

Cut a shape for your characters from card paper.
Cut the arms/ legs off and reattach with those folding arm tacks like in paper folders for joints
Glue the back of the puppet to a stick of some sort
You now have a puppet worthy for your brother's wife's son
