Thanks, /po/ring.

welcome

Thank you!
Do you have a picture of the finished craft?
I would be good for reference in case of a folding gone wrong.

Cool. I've seen another photo of the the finished version on some kirigami gallery, and always wondered how complicated it would be. Now if I could find my exacto knife, turns out a rusty box cutter is shit for this kind of work. ;_;

But thanks a lot for the diagram!

First try, with regular printer paper. Not thick enough...
>>
>>529526
>>529528
Welcome, I cut it out and started folding it but got distracted with life/school :p
I used cardstock to print it out, bent ok, but I'm still having trouble with some of the steps, I'll try to post when I get it done, but have class tomorrow night and trying to make something for my mom's birthday.
>>
>>529544
Yeah I think I made some mistake with the top part myself. But the paper was too thin anyways and I fucked up some stairs, so I started over with thicker paper.

Kinda unrelated, but I put the second try on hold until I get decent cardboard and am weaving a sphere now.

>>529557
Oooohhhh, original or do you have a template/instructions?

Found it here: https://papermatrix.wordpress.com/2014/12/05/sphere-010-open/

(you need 2 sheets total, 1 mirrored version of the picture, so you get 24 arms)

It gets tricky near the end, because all arms need to meet at the same spot to close the sphere, so you need to put some effort into shaping it exactly. But that's part of the fun, isn't it?
>>
>>529560
ooohhhh thanks!
Looks like it might make an interesting lantern of sorts
>>
>>529568
If you don't close the other end and glue the arms halfway or at 2/3rd, it can make a nice container/basket if you turn it upside-down. Or a lamp screen with the bottom open and dangling arms casting shadows. Which is what I'm inclined to do with my current print paper version, I've wasted so much time closing it then some part untangled from the weave, fuck that.
>>
This here might be of interest for beginners, and as templates to come up with new designs. Should I post more?
>>
>>529586
more, please and thank you :)

I would love a template but I doubt there is one

Yeah, that guy is pretty sick. And I don't think he published any templates of his works yet, one can hope...

On another note, I experimented with various kirigami stuff the last days and just finished this here, modular kirigami. Now, how do I color that thing?

It's made from 20 hexagons, the inventor recommends 5 colors, each 4 times. (I have enough hexagons precut from patterned paper, just dunno how to arrange them...
>>
I did this for art at school, can post if people want to see
>>
>>529733
If you're referring to coloring of >>529719 then yes please. I tried to write a program which goes through all possible combinations and evaluates them, but it's not working properly yet.

Any template available, i also want to make one.

Sorry for the delay.

The model is a "topological small triambic icosahedron". Original designer is Robert Webb, I believe. I found a stylized version with rounded arms and those yin-yang flaps on Flickr, seems it was created by Philip Chapman-Bell.

Let's start with a little teaser, showing the assembled models: top part is Webb's original, bottom the stylized version with pretty cool colors, and its template.

Obviously not a good idea to print that template with solid colors, so I traced it with Inkscape. Turned out that printing 6x (you need 5 per color, 1 spare) on a Din A4 page was a pain in the ass to cut out, but it should work well on A3.
>>
>>532052
So here's another render, with 2 pieces per sheet.

Please note that it's mirrored. I'm left-handed and found that it's much more easier for me to cut the circular flaps when they go the other way round like this. Make a test print, and check what suits you best.
>>
>>532054
You are so nice, thanx!!
>>
>>529526
If you have one, the largest blade on a swiss army knife works really well, if you don't mind slightly frayed edges.
>>
>>532160
Thanks for the tip, but since I posted that try, I upgraded my equip a bit :) Got some cutting mat, a real exacto knife and even a handful of scalpels from a buddy who works in a hospital (they are great for cutting tiny details, but become dull pretty quickly since they are supposed to be discarded after one-time usage).
>>
>>532163
Alright. Good luck remaking it (*´ω`*)
>>
>>532164
Yeah, it's definitely on my list. Well, actually I made one more version already, with glossy patterned paper. But during folding it turned out that the design on the paper, and especially the gloss, totally kills the intricate shadows you get with kirigami when using matte single-colored paper. So there's that, gave up when I realized it's going to look like shit, and postponed the project.

Currently doing modular origami stuff for a change, found dirt cheap square paper in a local shop (0.69€ for 200 sheets in 10 colors - couldn't resist and bougth a few kilos hehe)
