With the old thread gone it seems appropriate to begin anew. Feel free to post your collections, your works in progress, or your star hordes!

This was my anniversary present to my girlfriend. It was my first time ever doing stars, and they didn't come out as clean as I would've liked. I used three packs of star paper I picked up from a hobby store. I also cut up some receipts and tickets from dates we'd been on and folded those. It took around fifteen hours total. I threw in some larger construction ones to fill up the box which I regret. they were too large, poorly done, and clashed with the rest. I had an old necklace box which I repurposed and tied with a red ribbon.

Does anyone have any advice on where to get the paper? I can't find any local stores that stock it. Making my own has proved tedious and they haven't come out great. I checked my school's paper shredders and they rip them too tiny and too narrow.

My board game store (LEX) is apparently not just a Magic: The Gathering and board game store, but rather a hobby store, and it has a bunch of stuff you can use in crafts, check shops you might have overlooked.

Also, print patterns on larger papers with lines and use a cutter or a sharp knife to drag a decently straight edge

Making some stars myself, although I have no idea what I'll use them for.

I love this paper, it's kinda like greaseproof paper, but coloured and more delicate. It makes for nice, crisp points and sides.
>>
>>515562
More details on the paper please?

They look really nice
>>
>>515575
Ebay, my friend.

Slightly pricey for what it is, but looking at the stars, I think it was worth it. I figure they look like candy.

For me, simple (although colored) A4 paper, a cutter and http://www.printfreegraphpaper.com/gp/c-i-12-a4.pdf did the trick.

Got some 12x12 paper from joann's, really awful for any origami more complex than a crane, so I cut it up and made stars. A nice desk piece.
>>
>>515478
Cool!
Where have you bought the glass sphere?
Looked everywhere and couldn't find one.
>>
>>515478
How do you do the arrangement inside the recipient?
I just can't make it right =/
>>
Just got into origami and I can only make paper planes and paper stars, but I have a iestipn, how do you guys make them so perfect?

Every time I try to make one one of the tips (in the final star) turns up very curved in comparison to the others, making it look asymmetrical
>>
>>516038
How did autocorrect turn question into iestipn?
>>
>>516038
Practice, practice, practice. Most of us have probably made thousands of stars.

Everyone has their own method, though. Are you pinching the corners up, or making the dipped part between the points? I tend to dig thumbnail into the edge half way between where the points would be which makes a nice crease and tends to make the points form by themselves. You can see an example of how my stars look doing it that way here. >>515562

How do i make the stars tiny?
i tried with a 75gms paper but it was too thick.

Thanks, this PDF worked nicely. These are the first few stars I've ever made. Does anyone have an estimate on how much space ~700 stars made with 05" strips would take up?
>>
>>517346
lol gay
But in all honesty, I never realized there was a backstory with these little star things. Better start now.
>>
>>517376
For a rough estimate, measure the 3 dimensions of one star (as in a 3D axis) and multiply one of these 3 measure by 7 and the other 2 by 10.

For instance, if your star measures (random values here) 1.2" x 1.1" x .3", you'll need a rectangular box around 8.4" x 11" x 3".
>>
>>517346
such crys
>>
>517344
Put them in clear containers. They make nice nicknacks to decorate your house.
>>
I haven't made these stars in ages. I should get back to doing it, as I have a lot of scrapbook paper now, which would make terrific stars.

I found out voss bottles are an awesome container, a bit expensive though. The silk screening has been stripped off
>>
>>517858
How big are those stars?
>>
>>517919
from the info given by the anon who posted the pic is this is a 375 ml voss water bottle.

Those bottles are 9 inch tall but one inch is the cap so we have 8 inch or 20.3 cm of glass. now that we know this we can calculate the inner base of the bottle is 18.5cm2 (375cm3/20.3)
how that we know that we know that the radius is 2.42cm (root of (18.5/3.14))
so we have a internal diameter of 4.85 cm

I would say that those stars are made with paper strips of about a quarter inch or 6mm thick so the stars are at the widest point 10 millimeters in diameter or about 0.4inch

this however is all speculation since I didn't post or made this picture just an estimated guess
>>
>>517920
umm, that's amazing and right

The only way you could have topped that, would have been to guess the number of stars inside
>>
>>517928

Well one star will have a volume of 0.48 cm3 .
There is a total of 375ml or 375cm2 in the bottle so if it was 100% stars it would contain 780 stars.
That number however is too high because there is plenty of air in between the stars so I think the number would be in between 450 and 520 stars.
If I had to give a number I would say 500 because its halfway to the mythical 1000 stars and it would make sense to try to fit 500 stars in there instead of lets say 487

how far am I off ?
>>
>>517933
that's a really good estimate, it was 540 stars in total

Time to find another interesting jar to fill
>>
>>517858
Those look really nice for quarter inch strips. What kind of paper did you use to get them looking so sharp?
>>
>>517940
It's regular a4/letter paper 80gsm thick

And I like them with minimal creases, so they look puffier

This one took me quite awhile to finish. I think I started this last December & I finished it around August or so.
>>
>>515478
Cool!
Where did you get the glass ball?
>>
>>518065
its a plastic bottle, if you look closely you can see it is standing on the cap they sell them in craft stores where I live
>>
>>518065
Thanks! Its a plastic bottle, like the post above mentioned. It was a novelty jar that was filled with jelly beans. I found a lot of candy bottles/jars are unique and interesting to use.

>>516013
Each star was placed individually using 3 sets of different tweezers, each star was carefully set so that they were facing outwards

>>517991
That looks nice, and the container is interesting. If you are looking for some critique, it's always better to discard the deformed stars than to leave them into your projects. It doesn't take much time to replace them, and makes your final product look much better
>>
For regular printer paper what length and width should the strips be for the best stars??
>>
>>518159
10mm or 1/2 inch using cutting length way, or 6mm or 1/4 inch using horizontal cuts

Thats the best paper utilization without the strips being too long/short, the stars have good rigidity.

>>
>>518448
sorry but I doubt that 730 stars will fit in there

I would think that 270 is a more realistic estimate
>>
paper stars make me very happy. this thread is awesome.

I do, and they really help with your workflow

I found that cutting paper with a guillotine is one of the most tedious and time consuming parts of the entire process. I found that my pieces of paper kept shifting while making cuts, causing inconsistencies with the star sizes

With my current workflow, I can make about 200 stars every 8 hours, but I'm not too sure if anyone else has ever made a note of their time spent.
>>
>>518536
ooh ok yea in that case you can get more then 270 in there
the color's seem pretty nice I am really curious for the end result
I am sure it will be nice
>>
>>518581

did you place the stars into the container too in that time ? that would make sense then
>>

The lightbulb one is just there to hold some extra stars at the moment. I'm planning on folding some metallic gold stars and putting them in there. Maybe I'll find a little glowy thing and put in there there too, somehow.

I took a glue stick and coated the whole thing to give it an easier surface to paint on so it'll stay (not sure if that was even necessary lol). Then after it dried, I painted it with acrylic paint. After that dried, I coated it with a clear acrylic spray finish....thing.

I might've sprayed, then painted, then sprayed again. I can't remember. I'm not even sure if that was the right process to use; I just guessed from my minimal cosplay experience. I hope it doesn't look like shit by now. It seemed to hold up when I gave it to him so hopefully it stayed that way.

5180 stars all folded over the past few years. I've given a bunch away... so this might be maybe a third or so of what I've folded. I fold them for mostly stress relief. I'm more surprised at the fact that I counted them all 3 times to make sure I knew how many there were then the fact that I folded so many.

Well if it isn't my favourite /po/ thread. Here's the current collection (but by no means all I've made, I've lost count of how many jars I've given away over the years.) The green penguin was actually a gift from someone else but it looks nice with the rest of them haha.

I've been making lucky stars on and off since I was a teen (generally when I'm giving up/cutting down on smoking haha) so that's a good 9 years at least.

I was just getting around to filling some jars a bought last month and remembered this thread.

Most of my stars I make from regular printing paper (8.5"x11") which I then cut into strips of 0.5"x10" that gives me some nice solid stars. I cut them all using a Fiskars rotary cutter that's about $50 but I used a 40 percent off coupon to buy it. Always consistent, all the time.

In the spicy honey container, I've filled it with stars made of gold and red paper. I think I'm going to start collecting glass bottles to start putting my stars into. I'm thinking maybe a bottle of Patron would be a nice addition

ink costs an arm and a leg, and unless you are hijacking a work or school printer, its easier to buy patterned paper from your craft store to cut up.

I'm really admiring the stars in here. I did a few jars of the puffy ones as gifts but then, when it came to decorating for my sister's wedding, she wanted a shabby chic theme to everything. So, I made her some shabby stars. They're larger, rougher, and not puffy.
>>
>>526839
I hate making bigger stars unless the strip is sufficiently long enough to make enough rounds and come out decent. It's a hassle. They come out ugly and puffy. Imho

Thanks for the new hobby guys, in in the middle of my exams and it really helps with dealing with the stress.
Sorry for the different sizes, I'm using a scissor to cut the papers, and its pretty uneven. Hopefully i fill the box up soon!! Any advice for a newbie?
>>
>>530299
Assuming you're in school, see if you can take airt supplies from the supplies cupboard, basic coloured paper can make your lucky stars look amazing

Also, a guillotine is your best firend for cutting paper, you can cut multiple sheets at a consistent size

Lastly, find an interesting container to fill, go to a craft or home deco store to find decorative bottles and jars, it will give you motivation to fill the entire container
>>
>>530304
I take the guillotine bit back, the shredder is your best friend

I met a Chinese girl in high school, and I paired up with her on a lot of things since I had tons of patience was able to help her somewhat. For my birthday, she gave me a jar of yellow and gold paper stars (my favorite color). So paper lucky stars have a really special place in my heart, and now a few years later I'm trying to get into origami to make someone something special like that too.
/blog
>>
>>517344
Start leaving them in places that you go. If you go out to eat, leave one or two little stars with the tip. Leave some stars on the top of a staircase, etc. Brighten someones day with a cute little star.
>>
>>530307

Get a cheapo $10 shredder, they always leave out the fancy features, but still cut evenly

>>530316
The best motivation is making something for someone, or doing requests/commissions, most of my jars are gifts, the 2 globes I have made were requests, and the voss jars I made have been really popular

If I end up with a few extra inches of paper after the 5th wrap, is it better to continue wrapping or trim at 5? It's usually 5-6 more turns worth of excess.
>>
>>533905
It's up to you but personally the more wraps the better. Depending on the width and thickness of the paper, more wraps help to "fluff" the star up and make it look nicer.
>>
In theory could you make paper stars out of a clear plastic sheet and use them to suspend an origami bird in a glass?
>>
>>533965
Sure but the bird will be bury as fuck if visible at all. the stars are at least 10 layers thick and however clear the plastic you use it's going to be blurry at that many layers even if it were one layer of stars thick around the bird.
