Hey so question for those who do street photography. I wonder how you guys would handle when you take photos focused on strangers, like do you ask them, or do you really try to hide that you're taking their photo or just out in the open?
I ask because it is something I'd like to try with my camera, I just moved into a city so I'd like to start practice doing it, I just feel awkward taking pictures of strangers, and feel like im invading their privacy and that im in the wrong. So just looking to hear some stories of your experience in street photography, good stories, bad stories, and advice on how you approach it.

If you feel it's wrong then why do you want to do it?
That is the clinical definition of evil.

Stay in shape and dont look likr a pedo and youll be fine. Keep a scrap book with shit you havr shot before so when insecure people come up to you, yiu can show them the pics.
Either that, shoot from the hip, act like youre adjusting thr cam and come off as even more creepy, or just grow a pair of balls.
Shithead. Otherwise you werent passionate about photography in the first place if you are afraid of what others think.
Love, /p/. Faggot.
>>3146399
i dont think its wrong, maybe i should've worded that better, its more of thinking people who get mad or weirded out about it will.
>>3146400
I guess you're right, i am passionate about photography, but i also can't help but worry what people think, its a shitty trait that has definitely held me back in my passions.
Still interested in general how others handle doing street photography
-no one cares about your photo.
-really, no one.
-between not shooting and shooting, you better shoot, otherwise youll spend all night thinking about how much of a coward cuck you are.
-drugs help boost confidence and sometimes creativity. microdoses of lsd work wonders on anxious types.
-go and just take your photo. 99% of times people wont mind. if they do, do a friendly chuckle, smile politely and move on. dont talk.
-these are all behaviors that stem from a mindset, which you dont have, so im going to borrow it with you hoping youll make it yours in time:
>Im a photographer, a real photographer
>Im the best, most brilliant photographer in the world
>I have a message that matters
>My eye is so unique no one could do these shots but me and if i dont do them out of cowardice or whatever im robbing humanity -and myself- from some top stuff
>People feel thankful from being photographed by me
>When im out photographing, theres nothing more important than my photos
-and finally, have fun, thats the whole point of all this.
>>3146407
im not anxious, and i have confidence, i just know people can get pissy if seeing their photos taken by a stranger
how old are you?

Looking like a hipster or art student helps a lot. I also mainly use film cameras so on top of the looks people just asume I'm indeed either one or the other.

looks like you were walking when you took this, probably because you were worried about stopping and taking a picture?
so it's more in focus and sharper, you'll want to take your shutter speed down a little, and don't move when you shoot - if you don't want to stay in one place too long, stop walking for the second it takes to take the picture then head off right after.
as you get more confident, take more and more time preparing the shot, so you can frame it better and work on composition.
oh, and it's board etiquette to resize pictures to 1mb by the way, just so you know (but you get people posting like 4mb so you didn't fuck up too bad)

nice trips you weaboo photographer faggot
trying to hide the fact you're taking the picture will make you look weirder than being open about the fact you're taking pictures - not acting ashamed of it gives off the impression you're a photographer, looking like you're afraid of being seen doing what you're doing gives off the impression something shady is going on. don't worry that you're going to look like a pervert if you're anxious though, i'm just saying don't be like, actively hiding behind things or in bushes.
the way i start off is acting like i'm taking pictures of the street as a whole, or something architectural. it lets me work on how the background is composed and means people don't pay much attention to me. then i'll either find the shot i want and wait until someone is about to walk into the frame, or i'll make it look like i'm scanning around for my next shot and just happen to pause on the person i'm taking a photo of for a second. if you don't draw attention to yourself, people won't notice most of the time, and if they do? you're not making it obvious you're shooting them, so they won't be certain enough to actively confront you about it. people as a whole want to avoid confrontation unless actively provoked. most of these people don't care about you in the same way you don't think about most people you walk past in a busy city centre.
i'm definitely still learning in terms of how to take good photos, but as far as technique on 'shooting strangers without them trying to fight you' i think i'm doing okay enough, because this lets me take photos of people looking straight into the lens while they're trying to work out if i'm taking photos of them, but then don't do anything about it because i act casual afterwards and look through or around them before and after checking the photo.

I've just started taking street photos with Fuji x70. It has 28mm fixed lens. It's very wide and you can zoom only with your feet so you often have to be very close to people on the street. The thing is that I live in Moscow and Russian people are kinda more aggressive, than Europeans or Americans, and even in such circumstances the people on the street are even more afraid of me and my camera (mb it's because of that I'm 193 cm / 6'4" tall lol). I'm wearing kinda "tourist" clothes and all I do is pretend that I'm not interested in people at all, giving 100% of my attention to the background and I promise you - when you act in this way no one gives a fuck.

There is never enough time to ask to take a photo. Asking ruins the photo bc it then become a stagged photo. Ppl WILL flip out on you when you take pictures of thugs or of kids but you have to just not care. YOU WILL GET PHYSICALLY ATTACKED AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK.

I get that, but your frame is filled with lots of useless stuff while your subject takes only little space, while your subject is somehow not really interesting. Shot this with a 35mm on film and although it shows very sloppy framing, it might help you understand what I mean.

I had this problem. If you have a girlfriend bring her people will think you are harmless.
If you are alone. Go to farmers markets or some kind of festival where people see it as an event and get comfortable taking shots.
When you are comfortable doing regular streets without evens go out thinking positive, have an idea about what kind of photos you want to take and listen to some uplifting music. If someone gives you a dirty look smile. Remember if someone gets angry; its them not you. Its there fault not yours. You have every right to take pictures without being a dick. Stay away from low hanging fruit (cripples, homeless, poor, thugs) unless you get permission or are ballsy. Some of my photos are @danielszpunar on instagram good luck
