Film General Thread - The roll of shame edition

Old thread >>3138620

You know that roll of film that you absolutely know you fucked up and realised too late, so you will never have it developed? I'm sure most of us have one of those laying around the desk.

Post your beautiful grainy snapshits here, or discuss why Fujifags and Kodakucks can't be friends.

>just posting in the /fgt/ doesn't make you gay, unless you shoot Ilford film

>roll of shame

I have a 24 shot roll I managed to open the back of my camera on and have the first 5 ruined

Too embaressed to finish the roll and get it developed.
>>
>>3144420
No shame, my dude...but yeah, the guy at the lab is going to lol at you
>>
was shooting my first roll, was about 17 exposures in, and then i felt my cameras back somehow got opened in my bag
closed it, rewinded the roll, and decided to get that shit developed i dont even care
>>
>You know that roll of film that you absolutely know you fucked up and realised too late, so you will never have it developed?

I have a roll of Provia 100F full of snapshits from 2007 that I still need to dev. It needs to be pushed two stops and I can't justify that kind of $$$. Would be interesting to see though...maybe soon.

Shot this today. Fuji Natura thst went through two airport x-rays. Seems unaffected. Found a lab in Hanoi with insane dev+scan prices. 2 rolls of 35mm and 2 rolls of 220 dev+scan for ~$7usd.

it wasnt A roll, it was 2 of them that i absofuckinglutely cucked up. one was a provia roll and the other one a fucking e100VS roll. it happened because i didnt test the camera, it was a full electronic one and it somewhat had set its internal EV compensation to +8. photos are still intelligible after photoshop recovery but as slides they are literally transparent. fuck.

it was like +4 actually, enough to cuck up slide film. and no, i didnt right away. i did when i shot shit at sunset hour and it took a little too much time on exposures, then i suspected shit, but not THAT shit.

I did something similar once.

Bumped cqmera out of aperture priority mode and shot two whole rolls, one of them Provia 400x, at 1/1000.

Whole thing was an underexposed mess. only a handful were salvagable. This was the best exposed one on theentire roll.

id have wasted so much film and money if I would had to have learnt on film.
id probably have been put off and lost enthusiasm
>>
>>3144560
Probably not. You fuckup less once you realise the tangible amount of money each amount of shot costs.

Shooting film is no harder than digital, and in some ways is slightly easier
>>
>>3144568

I use to go out with my digital camera, shoot 400 pictures a day, and never get around to editing more than a handful.

Now a 36 exposure roll lasts me days.
>>
>>3144513
Get printfile.
It is the only good brand.
>>
>>3144417
Shot 2 rolls at a party with the camera set to M-sync instead of X-sync. Totally blank.
Developed 2 rolls of 220 from an overseas holiday at once in wasted e6 chems. Blank slides.
Some things you've just got to learn the hard way.
>>
Two rolls of tri-x, one a test roll for a new body and the other a completely irreplaceable 37 shots on a Fed 2 at a once-in-a-lifetime event. Tried to do the 1+100 2-hour semi-stand dev in Rodinal, turned out the dev had expired or gone bad (my aluminium foil cap on the bottle may have had something to do with it) & got completely blank film w/ a slightly pink hue to it. Thankfully I had shot 6 or 7 rolls with a F5 as well, would've been real embarrassing otherwise, now just annoying and a real shame 'cos Fed 2 + stand dev'd tri-x had been all kinds of win previously.

Do leader tests, lads. Xtol in particular goes bad in a snap. Don't be like half the posters in this thread, lel.

My uni has a free open-use darkroom for photo students and I just use that to develop. It's nice because I can pick and choose which shots I want to print and keep all my negatives for later.

I'm trying to determine reciprocity failure for Fuji Pro 160 NS, but Fuji's datasheets are not as informative on it as I'd like them to be.
Instead of the usual graphs they only have this table afaict.

How am I meant to interpret this for longer exposures of 10, 30 or even 60s?
A third of a stop for anything over 4 seconds, third of a stop for every 4 seconds or just don't do it because it'll be fucked?

There's that one roll of film I shot on an old folder where I didn't forward the film far enough between shots so all the shots overlap. I thought it was enough to forward until the double-exposure lock was released and didn't check for the frame numbers in the back window. That was the first film I shot with that camera.

It might actually be an improvement for some of those snapshits.

>tfw that roll is now my keychain

>>
do you think lab developers laugh at my pictures and my mistakes? my first roll ever came back like shit and i was just imagining the guy laughing at me lmao
>>
>>3144717
Probably not, they have seen it all/a ton of photos. They just do their job and develop your photos.

I really want to take some B&W lewds of my girl, but I'm a bit shy to get them developed. I mean she's of age, but she looks young so I don't want them to bat an eye. Is it immoral to just give the roll to my friend who usually develops and not tell him?
>>
>>3144719
If you just dev yourself there won't be a problem
>>
>>3144717
i developed all of my films in the same place, never took much pictures before starting with film, started and stayed with manual all these years, must have been like 1000's of shit photos, now guy knows me by name, remembers my phone no., calls me when hes done with developing them and comments on the ones he especially likes, its been like 7 years at this point, still 20 photos out of 36 are shit, 5 in a row are the same etc, not a single fuck was ever given

Agree, just develop them yourself

On the other hand, and in keeping with the theme, the first two rolls I developed myself were terrible. All the shits were either over or underexposed, I rinsed terribly, and my handling of the film was horrifying so some shots are full of dots and scratches. Also, fomapan film in foma universal developer and fomafix, is this amount of grain really normal or is this another thing I did wrong?

I need to finish a roll of Delta 3200 I started at a family indoors event. Shooting at EI 1600 to have it developed at 3200. Any neat ideas to finish it off and develop?
>>
>>3144423
Are you dumb? You had about 20 frames unexposed and safe inside the canister that would've been absolutely fine, and now you're just gonna develop the 17 that you might have fucked up.

Besides, the other ones are probably fine too. I've had that happen three times and it's fucked up two frames (and that was a half frame camera, so one normal frame).
>>
>>3144799
Looks quite grainy, but also underexposed. Rinse/wash the negative and get that dirt off of it. The residue might fuck your scan and PP:
Here's some fomapan 400 I shot 1/3stop under and developed in HC-110 dil. B.

>>3144799
Looks like it's just underexposed. The bits that actually had light on them look fine enough. Though it is a grainy film. I've only shot Fomapan in 4x5, and those came out looking much worse than HP5 does in 120 or even 135 if devved in X-Tol.

it was a 24 exposure roll so i wasn't the farthest from finishing

didnt feel like messing anything up if i were to expose more with the counter fucked up, is there any sort of danger of the film like coming out if i expose it til the end? or is it just gonna go taut and stay attatched?
>>
>>3144497
I've also gone through airport xrays twice with Natura and had no damage at all. Don't know if they use weaker machines these days or whether you just need to be unlucky, but seems like the warnings are exaggerated.

>>3144523
That makes me sad half frame bro.

I think the only roll I've fucked up bad so far was a roll of Tri-x that didn't want to get into the spiralmwhen developing. The Agat 18k I shot it with has a habit of ripping sprocket holes so that was probably the cause. Because it went into the spiral all wonky I got some marks from the film being stuck together at points, and partially empty frames from developer not getting everywhere properly. Nothing of value was lost however.

Also shot a roll of 35mm on a Holga using adapters I 3D printed. Had the frame count window taped up badly and had accidentally left the camera on the bulb setting for the shutter for over half of the roll. The negs have awful light leaks from the frame window and are probably fucked from camera shake, don't think I'll ever scan it.
>>
>>3144823
You'll definitely feel it when you reach the end of the roll. It's possible to break your film but you can just take it out in the darkroom and develop normally if you're developing yourself.

I still don't have much experience with film yet (not even with photography in general) and accidentally fucking up a roll should not stop you from developing it unless you're completely sure you blew it up like >>3144546 or >>3144523 because you'll probably get some happy accidents with light leaks or double exposures.

I my case, I shot a whole 24 exp. roll of self portraits out of pure boredom with a tripod and since I put the viewfinder cover as instructed by the camera manual not to throw the meter out of whack when using the timer, I completely forgot to check the focus. As soon as I finished I realised I had it at infinity, f/2.8 so there's no way in hell I could salvage anything out of it. It's sitting perpetually in my drawer as a reminder not to fuck it up again so badly.

dunno if this is fuckup or what. roll shot fine for 30 photos or something, then it decided to stop advancing (and i was unaware of that) and what you see is a multiple exposure comprised of 40 shots. i was a bit mad, but then i saw pic related and im liking it a lot.

Kodak Gold 400, about 15 years expired, was kept in a 110+ degree garage in Cali, shot these in Santa Cruz. Shot with my OM-1 and a Tamron SZ-38 lens

Sometimes nice stuff came through, and we'd show it to the others.
But tbrqhwy most of the stuff was typical /p/ shit.
Never made any personal copies or extra prints of nice stuff if that's what you mean.

>>3144880
By fucked up film I mean when people give you rolls that are either not exposed at all, or extremely under or over exposed, which you can tell without even looking for it.
Sometimes I'd look at the negs to judge their quality, especially after mixing new developer and such. Of course you can tell what was shot from looking at the negative, but I didn't take the time to look at every one of them, like >>3144881

Fampai, low light means shit light. To make a photo you need at least a bit. Two stop push just lets you shoot a lit scene at two stops faster a shutter speed or narrower an aperture; it won't cause the film to see things that're so far below reciprocity they leave a clear negative. Which is a funny thing to find out while shooting Tri-X at EI1600 at nighttime, thinking I'm so bloody clever.

I've had very nice results from HP5+ at 1600 in Microphen, though I suppose that's both Ilford's recommended combo for pushing and kind of expensive even in Europe.
>>
/p/, what is your file naming convention? Was thinking of YYYYMM__CAMERA(-LENS)__FILM__DEV__DEVTIME

Maybe add the number of the film developed, so roll number 3 of year 2017 for example.

It's not, the reason why people buy it is the same reason people buy expensive watches, it looks cool but a 100 dollar Seiko will be just as good quality and show the time 30 times more accurate.

I wasn't a fan when shooting it, but I kinda like how my tri-x came out. This is a straight scan. It does kind of have a sepia tint I am not sure I am a fan of.

Probably wont bother shooting it again until I get stuff to develop it myself.

This. Of course pushing helps shooting in low light a bit but it's mainly pushing up the shadows and midtones, blacks are going to be black still. I push to 160" routinely but it's mostly so I can use smaller aperture/faster shutter speed and also to get the high contrast look. I also live up north so it's my only option during winter.

>>
>>3145796
I feel you, but that's demand and supply really. You can thank "top 10 film cameras" lists for the price climb though.
>>
>>3145799
Or, should I say, "top 10 compacts" seeing as the Ricoh is digital anyway. The principle still applies.
>>
>>3145485
Nice. What film?
>>
>>3145796
But...that IS how much they are worth now. You don't get to pick a good's price from an arbitrary time in the past and apply it to today. Otherewise, gimme an NSX for $20k because thats what they were going for 8 years ago.

35mm film compacts have gained popularity. The same supply, which is even smaller now than it was 7 years ago, now has to meet a much higher demand. Prices reflect that. Economics 101 broski.

There is probably a more affordable alternative. What features do you like about the GR?

The great auto focus, compactness and overall ease of use was the main reason I loved it back then, I only got back into photography about 6 months ago picked up a Fuji DL-200 from an op shop for $3. The AF misses a lot and the flash can't be turned off (auto flash) which is a problem since I shoot street.
>>
>>3145768
You don't. You can find a Ricoh R1 for cheaper occasionally though - that's what I got.
>>
>>3145833
Maybe you can try an Olympus mju? Either a "1" or "2" will work. Search a prime lens model though, zoom versions suck ass and have lousy IQ and aperture. Being a meme themselves they also went up in price (especially the mju-2) but if you shop around they can be found for a much reasonable price than a GR. Don't pay more than 50 bucks for either of them, though.
>>
>>3145833
The mjuii is sick. Ive used a few and they would miss focus once every 4 or so rolls. Great camera, the hype is real around them.

If you want Ricoh, the R1S is a cheap alternative. Also look into the GR10, which is essentially a fully auto GR1 (no exp comp or anything).

Just take a look at ebay, but don't look for a specific model or brand; e.g. mju.
Look for "old cameras", or "old camara".. people are stupid and oftentimes sellers don't know what a specific camera is worth, or they sell in bulk to get rid of them as fast as possible.
Got my mju alongside some canon ixus aps, pentax espio and yashica AF for less than 20eur incl. shipping this way.
Even if these aren't working you can still sell them for more than you paid yourself if you're just selling them "for parts".

Use this search on eBay

35mm "compact" "camera" -zoom

Then filter by price and buy now options. I've seen some interesting stuff with manual flash controls, you just have to investigate the range of ISO values it accepts and you're pretty much good to go without paying scalper/hipster taxes.
>>
>>3145892
It's 13 euro for a 35mm roll and 12 Euro for 120 film. If that's for just a single frame or the whole 120 roll I'm not sure.
That's to get 2430x3550 scans. You pay more for bigger. And you can pay extra for either them sending it back immediately or to have them collect your film and then send it all back at the end of the year.
I paid around 75 NOK to send two rolls last time, but I could fit more rolls into that letter.
I'm about to do it again and send in 3-4 rolls of 35mm and one roll of 120
>>
>>3145899

I am really going to take a lot of fucking pics. Analog is so much fun. Developing is fun. Just bought a bulk loader and 30m roll of film. Next up is a darkroom. I already have everything I need except a red light and a timer.

Health wise I am feeling better so waking up feels okay again. I can go outside now.

I just need to DO IT. I rarely take pics... Happy I bought a G R because I do not like taking a big DSLR with me.

Anyone else having hard times taking pics? I have health issues and can get a bit near depressed if I feel like shit.

Get a Ricoh XR-X 3PF.
Probably the dankest manual focus K-mount body going, if you're into multiple metering modes, and high top shutter speeds, and automatic film handling.
Also, the Rikenon 50/1.7 is one of the highest contrast 50mm's I've used, and very compact.

whats the difference between a bronica SQ and SQ-A? which one should i choose?

the sqa has mirror lockup and supports viewfinders with autoexposure capabilities. the sq-ai adds the capability to use motor drives, among other things

Make sure the end is straight, not bent from being on the spool. Bend it straight with your fingers if needed. If it get stuck winding on, just give the reel a slap on its side with the palm of your hand.
If you're really struggling, cutting the corners of the end off at 45 degree angles, a few millimeters in, can help.

Zenits are clunky and wildly unreliable garbage that idiots pay premium for. If you're on a budget then the Praktica MTL5b is probably your best bet. Crude but reliable, the meter is accurate and the metal blade shutter will still have life in it when you enter your grave. b-model uses modern SR44's, so you should make sure to grab that.

Well, if they didn't have their own 35mm coaters and stuff and relied on rebranding even during film prime time I doubt it's new roll film and it's going to be most likely new instant stuff.

In your opinion, anons, film's new spring is just something that will end or is it something it will last to coexist with digital photography?
>>
>>3146743
People that are discovering and ejoying film now are people that either didn't have any contact with it at all, or it was anecdotical and quickly replaced by digital when they were kids. There's always going to be people of the first kind, so I'd say the film production and discontinuation will eventually stabilize, and as long as digital sensors suck shit (no end in sight) with only MOAR MEGAPICKLES going for them and digital MF is a $20K+ experience out of the reach of an average person, there's always going to be a market for film in one way or another. Fun fact: I remember reading about Ilford barely noticing the digital arrival. Even if slides go the way of the dodo, b&w is here to stay.

Is the lense mounted properly?

Does it also do this when you have the lense set to a manual setting?

No, when I manually set the aperture, it works fine, it's just that the camera doesn't meter at all, the needle just stays all the way at the top (except when checking the battery or with the shutter speed outside of the coupling range).

So, when digital came about everyone jumped ship for the most part. It was a massive migration. That abrupt abandonment of film can never happen again.

Some held onto it, either shooting it exclusively or along with digital.

Now there's been a slow wave of younger people embracing film. They've had digital, there won't be a sudden migration back to digital like there was. They'll come and go but it'll be mostly stable I think.

Film will always remain a shell of its old self, but I think current conditions are more or less how it'll remain until the next economic downturn occurs. That may cause a decently large percent of the young kids to abandon ship.

There's new Lucky SHD 100 if you're looking for chinkshit film. It's barely cheaper than slavshit film but worse. Polyester base, packaging is in China Font. Dunno where it's actually made; polyester suggests Agfa.

>>3146757
If that's f/2.8 I'm a fucking mexican.
I'd imagine that the camera has done some program shift bullshit on you and just exposed correctly for its max shutter speed instead, and stopped the lense down accordingly.
>>
>>3147126
Svema is russian. It'll be crude but workable, definitely not too good for soviet and classic gear. Can't do much with a camera if there's no film, yes? It's better than not having any.

Orwo is belgian, or some such. West europe. Generally this is expected to be good stuff, but since Orwo hasn't sold anything on its own brand for a long time, expired film badness should appear. Some said that the erstwhile BRF400+ was actually Orwo N74+; if this is the case, then Orwo's film is dank shit.

Fomapan is the slavshit we usually denigrate. It's still adequate film, but requires a better developer than Rodinal to get proper contrast. Downside is, price in bulk is only single figures cheaper than direct competitor of Tri-X and HP5+.

Lucky SHD, when it was available, was generally roughly on par with russian films. Not something you'd seek out in Europe, because it's a strictly worse product with an import markup, putting it roughly on par with Kentmere and RPX -- both good films with good QA.

I've heard there's at least two parties in Russia experimenting with B&W film manufacture; one is Silberra (which claim to have actual product being sold; also chemicals), and the other I can't remember -- they've only posted experimental shots on Twitter so far, "useful to photographers who know what they're doing" tier. I have no idea what the dynamic for this is; cheap film for the masses? Yet Silberra's marketing material suggests hi-fi materials. It'd be useful if an actual russian could chime in here.

for exposures of 4 seconds or more (including 10,30,60 seconds) the exposure compensation (of the lens opening by 1/3 more) is required.
Color compensation is unnecessary for exposures within a shutter speed range of 1/4000 to 2 seconds.

as far as with a shutter speed range of 2 to 4 seconds, i assume the exposure correction may or not be required depending. how i read it anyway could be wrong

Of the 4 rolls I've shot since my om2 pickup, #2 was the shameful one - it never actually hooked onto the winder. basically I shot fantasy photos for 2 hours in a cemetery in the rain. Total cringe.

These are from roll 4. The dslr scan looks pretty meh as you can see but the printed contact sheet looks fucking incredible...much more contrast and really dense shadows and highlights, so I'm a bit worried about scanning quality in general now.

Thank you for your attempt at helping, but I don't think you did the best job of it, if I even understand you correctly.
I've read up on it a bit more on other forums, and will try it with the same reciprocal compensation as Superia which seem to have similar characteristics; an extra 1/3 of a stop for every 4, 16, 64 seconds and so on.

Iirc the Shanghai guys moved to a new factory which made them have to stop producing film for a while, but I've read they'll be restarting production at some point and also rumors that they'll start producing Gp3 in 220.

Lucky just restarted so I guess there's hope that that stuff is true. I actually like Gp3 even though it's kinda cheap.

Can't say I'm bummed about no new c41 films (as long as Portra and Fuji Pro are still made), but I hope more companies have the balls to come up with a new e6 film like Rollei, though that's a rebrand. I'm weeping internally every time I get a roll of Astia, Provia 400x or other from the freezer from my diminishing stash.
>>
>>3147635
I have a roll of Lucky SHD 100 (new) in my hand, and another in the fridge. It's available from Maco as of a month ago at least, priced to compete with other cubic-grain 100 ISO B&W films. Inside of cardboard has distinctly China-style western lettering and mildly archaic school English giving development times for D-76, a house-brand copy of D-76, and some others. (definitely keeping it.) The plastic can is translucent, Fujifilm-style flexy cap on top, with four chinese letters marked top-down at one side. The cartridge is clearly distinct from ilford's, kodak's, fujifilm's, etc. manufacturing apparatuses: the ends are crimped towards the caps a little bit for reasons I can't imagine. Lettering on cartridge is all Chinese except for the bit that shows through the rear window on various later cameras. The film is polyester-base per touch and comparison to other such films.

Haven't shot any of it yet. Weather's going to be awful as well for the next week or so. Any suggestions? Planning something like one roll in F5 (50mm f/1.8G) for a hi-fi test, and another in a OM-4 or some such classic body for a comparably lo-fi test. Maybe the other in a soviet rangefinder instead, manual metering only, see what comes out?

I got a roll of rollei redbird lying around that's 2 months past its expiry date (and i only got that roll in march or so). Might get a Diana and take some snapshits with it. Will report back when/if I've got that roll full and developed.

Asked this in a gear thread, but maybe it's better I ask here

Just picked up a canon sure shot ii (38mm f/2.8) and the auto film advance seems stuck. The film spool with the leader take does not move at all, and the wheel that threads the film tries to turn slightly but doesn't not advance.
Literally everything else seems to work fine, but the auto advance.
Any ideas?
