Hey /p/, I am a graphic design major who's really interested in all forms of digital media. I like marketing and product packaging, film, music videos, album art, etc.
That said, I want to get a nice cheap beginners DSLR / mirrorless to start on. I know nearly nothing about DSLRs specifically, but i've handled plenty of film cameras and know how lenses work, etc. I didn't see any beginners guides or anything in the sticky, so apologies if you get these threads too often. I mainly plan on using it for recording beginner music videos and maybe short films, as well as product packaging and photos for use in my designs. Obviously needs to be at least 1080p, preferably 60fps but I don't know if that's common or not.
I currently work at Best Buy so if it's available there that's a plus because I can use my discount, but I am looking for the best deal, so if I can get it cheaper with a slightly used one on eBay i'd rather go for that.
Thank you!
Get a Sony a7ii. They're a great deal and cheaper than reddit tier crop sensor bullshit. Best system on the market.

Appreciate the advice, and I do like Sony's a series, that looks a little over what I'd currently consider cheap though. I was hoping to keep it under $1000 after getting all the neccessary supplies (SD cards, case, lenses)

Dude, that is not an entry level camera at all.

Get a Panasonic G80/G85 or a used GH4.

Get a D3300 from Nikon.
Used bmpcc and super 16 lenses if you want raw video
Bought mine for 500€
But you need to buy a battery for it. this is a pure video camera so no photos

a7 is around $700 at times.
AF is a little on the slow side with zooms, but still a nice camera.

I will take a look at these, I know my work stocks the D3300 so that might be something I could get on discount.

Video is important, but it definitely needs to shoot photos as well. thank you though

what about the a6000? looks more in my price range, and video reviews all seem to regard it highly.

It is +- as good as it gets in the (low-ish) price range if you want a combined photo / video camera, same as the earlier mentioned Panasonics.
OTOH you might more appreciate an A6500 or A7 II or A7S II for a mic in and IBIS and stuff, they just cover the basics a bit better.
Also, those are all pretty cheap options (by film standards). I'd probably actually suggest going for a midrange RED with some nice glass if the budget was more like some enthusiastic amateur film hobbyist's.
