I want a camera for family gatherings where it'd be unwieldy to bring my DSLR and a couple of lenses.
What point and shoot is the best for under $300 or so?
sony a9

used sony nex6/5r
bridge cameras are garbage
a kit lens is fine, it's a typical 18-55 zoom

>family gatherings
>unwieldy to bring my DSLR
As opposed to baby strollers, diapers, extra clothes, packed lunches and all that kind of stuff?
Yeah, your plastic entry level DSLR with kit zooms will really slow you down when taking a walk with your nieces and grandparents....

it does actually. that's why I don't take my DSLR anymore. i use a compact camera for anything that involves being with other people, not just family

Then if you use compact why are you asking? publicity sony boy.
Just use your phone if your primary concern is space.

better get a 5t.
Canon 6D with a 300mm lens.
Look for a Sony RX100, any generation
Maybe a Ricoh GR
Powershot sx530? It's a bridge camera. Lots of features. The color is pretty saturated but I like mine
