I have a decent collection of cheapish film cameras i've built over the last 2 or 3 years and I've decided I want to buy my first higher end 35mm film slr. I really like the nikon f2. what do you niggs think about the f2, or are there other cameras i should consider in the ~200 price range (for a nice one)?

Yo dude, depends where you're living. I'm not too well-versed it short term plans as I lived there for years and had ab2 year contract. There are definitely monthly plans you can sign up for. Be prepared to show your visa as places are quite hesitant signing over plans without proof of you being in the country for the duration of the plan. Also be aware that unless you sign up on the first of the month, you may get suckered into an extra month. I was with DoCoMo, but don't think they do monthly plans. Definitely make sure your phone is unlocked prior to coming.

okay sweet thanks for the info. I'm going to be in Hakuba being a ski bum.

>>3130946
Getting a high end 35mm slr is silly.
It's a light tight box. It doesn't matter. Get a nice medium format system, or get a rangefinder where the lenses you'll be buying into are actually markedly improved over SLR lenses.
The difference between high end SLR lenses and low end slr lenses is LESS then the jump in quality you'll get from high end SLR to a RF or any medium format camera.
>>3131063
Dude Hakuba is sick! I didn't explore the towns much, but if there's a kitamura camera in town they would send out for you...and potentially do 35mm c41 in house.
Otherwise people advertise their services on yahoo auctions as a Buy It Now price. If you go that route, once you have the contact info of a particular place you won't need to go through yahoo auctions again. I never went this route, but prices can be pretty damn cheap. ¥200 + shipping for dev + 16base scan.
>>3130949
CLE owner here. Shits cash, especially with m-rokkor lenses (I think voigtlqnder makes new m lenses that are roughly equivalents too). Framelines are a little weird (28/40/90) and don't always activate properly, so it can be odd with some of the more common m-mount lenses.

>>3131229
Yeah...but how much was shipping? I wouldn't pay more than $5 for a mju zoom. Super common to find second hand, unlike the sought after fixed lens versions.
>>3131212
If it's really disgusting on the outside, you could wipe it off with acetone and get some shoe cream in roughly the same colour (or even rub all the colour off and make it another one if you'd like). Do be sure to apply the cream relatively quickly after the acetone or the leather will dry out. I'd do the inside with a damp cloth with some green soap or other mild detergent. If you're really into it, you could even stitch in a new inside but idk how good you are with needle and thread
>>3131267
Thanks, will give the outside a good polishing tonight.
At the very least it should cover some of the old dusty musk smell.
Still not sure how to handle the inside. Gave it a good scrubing but the choclate/mud/shit/whatever-the-fuck-it-is did not come off at all.
I would just buy a replacement, but the only e-bay listing is $60 with $25 domestic shipping.
>>3131343
It is black and i like it black, so I am just gonna go over it with some polish. Seems to be in good enough condition for a 30 year old case.
As for resowing insides....that'd be a great idea, but i can't even sew a button on, so I will just try to give it a cleaning.
>>3131345
What country do you live in?
>>3131349

Yea, it'd probably cost half as much as just buying another.
Thanks though.
There is probably a leather rework shop nearby I can look into. I know of one that does bags, this shouldn't be too much of a difference.
>>3131364
Yeah, I think a regular cobbler would do it too. Mine also does wallets and bags so I imagine that won't be much different in Japan.
So I've read you can use g series lense on old nikon but you need an aperture ring adapter. Anyone know what adapter ring I'd need? Every time I search for one it comes up this crazy other shit.

the el dorado is such a wild building inside, one floor apparently has gold carpeting in the hallways and you have to take your shoes off, no matter whose apartment your going to.
Pic is Portra 400, all I shoot for 6x6. New scanner and using Silverfast now, 100 times happier than EpsonScan.
Over one million French workers were drafted into construction corps to build the French segments of the Atlantic Wall. The wall was frequently mentioned in Nazi propaganda as impenetrable and often greatly exaggerated in size and scope. Although some strongholds and port fortresses held out until Germany's final, unconditional surrender, most of the emplacements were stormed within hours of first contact with Allied forces.

If I'm shooting black and white film with a yellow filter on the lens, and using flash to fill, should I add +½EV to the flash power when doing fill computation because of flash spectrum being heavily blue? Or take the filter off entirely and go as one would at uncompensated box speed?

>>3131425
Yes, but it's a pain in the ass. 620 is 120 in a thinner spool (kind of a proprietary format by Kodak to drive the sale of their own cams). You'll have to re-spool 120 film in 620 spools and then pray your lab won't throw them away even if you ask them not to.

Not that hard, it's really easy to be true.
I rarely use a 1934 Kodak Vollenda 620, great folding camera that, as suggested, requires 620 film. You'll just need to trim the exceeding edges of 120 film until their level reaches film level, that's it. I use a nail cutter, matter of 1 minute.
Snapped this for 60 bucks at the flea market. There's some dings but it seems to work properly.
Considering there was another dude selling one for 300, i think i did pretty good.

That article is the worst case scenario with an entirely smashed front element.
You're not an experienced photographer if you've never used a camera with a single deep scratch and realized it doesn't affect the image quality save for occasionally a small loss of contrast.
A spiderweb fracture is exponentially more surface area for light scattering than a single scratch.

Why doesn't this camera get more love? Very solid build, huge viewfinder, fast AF, plays well with manual lenses, decent featureset, takes AA batteries, and best of all it's cheap. >>3132260
smaller than a paterson tank
uses less chemicals since it's constant rotation/agitation (similar to a jobo)
plus it lowers the barrier to entry for home film developing. loading the film in the dark is the 'scary' part that turns a lot of people off. if this thing gets a whole heap of people into developing film then it's cool with me
>>3132260
I don't even have a sibgle room where I live without a window. Plus it is extremely cramped and has limited space. A small tank that does not require darkness to load and requires less chemicals per roll is a major plus.

Eighties plastic horror from the time before AF had become good. But obviously a damn good cop if otherwise no camera, or no backup camera for F-mount stuff.
>>3132260
It's supposedly handier than a 2x135 Paterson for developing 2x120 in sequence, if there's two reels available. Temperature measuring on the tank seems useful since there's no obvious way to stick a separate meter's head in there. There may be convenience advantage for developing one-offs as well.
>>3132246

>>3132369
>I'll post to describe mine once it gets here.
Please do. I'm on the verge of ordering a Patterson tank and a changing bag but those make little sense as I still don't have a scanner, so I'm thinking I'd rather wait and get one of those instead when they're made available to the public.
I mean, who wouldn't want a box as easy to load as a mechanical SLR where you only have to pour the 500ml Rodinal dilution, then the fixer and call it a day?
>>3132369
I wish I had seen it before the kickstarter ended, would have totally been in on it.
Looking forward to what you have to say about it.
>>3132381
What would be the best scanner now-a-days anyway? I shoot enough that a dedicated scanner would be worth it over a dslr setup.
I hear the Plustek 8200 can't be beat, but that is 135 only. The new revisions of the epson flatbed is supposed to be pretty nice, but I hear tons of negative things about the lower end models.
>>3132385
No idea. I have exactly the same dilema. I've almost ordered the Plustek 8100 several times already but then I remember I also shoot 120 from time to time and I'd rather not pay an arm and a leg to get it scanned in a lab, neither do I have an SLR: just a mirrorless Fuji that I doubt would be good enough for this task. I guess I'll eventually just get a flatbed, but the bulkiness is really off-putting.
>>3132387
You could probably get decent enough shots with the Fuji, but considering there is no even halfway decent x-mount macro lens and you'd have to deal with the terrible xtrans raws and odd Fuji coloring, it probably isn't worth it.

>>3132389
I don't have the patience either. Even if I tried to do it the ghetto way with the lenses I have (just the cheapo kit and the 27mm pancake) I'd still have to buy a film holder and a light box so I'm again at the point I'd rather just get a fucking scanner or pay the lab.
>>3132405
Let's not derail this thread. I also hate that fucking cunt but it's not him this time. Yes, I do have a Fuji and I like it.

I just processed a roll of Delta 400 and there's a yellow streak across a lot of frames. Did the fixing fail somehow or what happened?
>>3132646
If it's a yellowish grey, then it sounds like part of the film drooped into contact with itself, therefore avoiding (most likely) both development and fixing. You may be able to clean it up a bit by re-fixing the affected bit. 120, right?
Post a quick cellphone snap to be sure.

135 and what I doubt in that theory is that the streak is so long that the film should have been touching itself for most of the spiral. If every layer is supposedly bulging and touching the next layer, no part of the film can be in contact with itself.

What's also amusing to me is that you used two motion blurred photos to illustrate sharpness.
>>3131422
I believe that the Hawkeyes are actually some of the sharpest Brownies you can get, but don't quote me.
Even so, simple single element meniscus box brownies will take very sharp photos if you use correct technique. Pic related.
620 film is just 120 on a slightly smaller spool. You will need to use a correct metal spool as your takeup, so the winding knob engages properly, however you can simply use a file or a bench sander or something to take some width off the plastic 120 spool at either end, and take the excess diameter off as well so it's almost level with the paper. Once it fits in the camera, you're good to go.
Use the red window on the back to wind to each frame, but keep it out of direct sun and then tape it over between shots.
>>3132726
Yeah, for 135 I got no idea. A duff fixer bath would underfix all over, bad agitation would make overall thin negs or streaks down the sprocket holes... could be something like a manufacturing defect, some crud along the film as a streak keeping the fixer out, if it's down the whole length incl. the fully black bit at the start. But I wouldn't expect this of Ilford based on their previous defect response; they were very thorough, clearly a reputation to maintain there.
If the streaks are vertical in landscape orientation, it could be a loading error, like even minutely moist reels or something, causing the film to actually bunch up a little bit here and there. That can also happen because of the film sweats, being summer and so forth. Or condensation if you kept the film in the fridge waiting to process, and didn't let it warm up for a couple of hours in between.

bois I'm looking into films and I can't seem to get the fidelity/smooth contrast that other b&w photographers get - when shooting stuff with a lot of sky, how do I get that sweet dynamic range where the sky isnt completely blown out compared to the subject?
using an om-40 btw
>>3132767
I have to keep investigating. It is horizontal. It's in the middle frames and runs through about a dozen. Both ends are clear. I've had this problem once with 120 in the past. The reel was dry but I'll see, if it's a loading error.
>>3132810
Ah, you're using a consumer body.
You need to upgrade to a prosumer or pro-tier body to get that increased dynamic range. Something like an OM4-Ti would work, however Olympus is really a low-grade brand.
Nikon or Leica will give you the best dynamic range.
I took this photo with my hasselblad, it's an "upper-pro tier" camera, check my range.

I am looking for an m-mount 28mm lens.
Can't decide between m-rokkor 28mm and Ms Optics 28mm.
The m-rokkor is a better lens, especially wide open, but it is really hard to find a copy with clean glass since they had a manufacturing defect that causes spotting on the front element. Most aren't bad enough affect image quality, but it is unsightly and can get worse.
The Ms Optics isn't all that great wide open, but stepped down past f/4 looks fine. Plus it is small enough to make it pocketable.
I am going purely on reviews for this, does anyone have any first hand experience with either?
>>3132825

The MS is made of pure JCH meme faggotry.
The menelta has a known manufacturing defect.

I was leaning towards the native Minolta because I have read that the Clear is weird and lenses from different manufacturers can set off the 40 and 90 framelines. Not too much of an issue, but kind of annoying.

Killing yourself would possibly be a bit extreme. It's a good subject and suits being backlit like that, but by you've trivialised it and removed any potential mystery by having those trees in the background. Keep the same focal length, go in closer and lower so having it take up more of the frame, back it against the sky so it's completely isolated and have the comparative height feel much more imposing. Then you've got a good snapshit.
>>3132810
You start out with a real pretty sky. Then add a colour contrast filter (orange is typical for shots that've got a lot of sky) and/or polarizing filter (adjust until the sky gains hella contrast). Because the sky will still be many stops above things lit by it (and direct sunlight), you'll still want to overexpose your film and underdevelop it.
You can also do what Alex etc. do and put a graduated ND filter on top of the sky part, bringing it down from blown-white range without fucking the shadows.
Basically, landscapes are hard.
>>3132810
Overcast sky is tough to fix with anything other than a graduated ND.
If you do lots of landscape stuff, a graduated ND filter is a must have. 2 stop soft is the most versatile, look into Formatt-Hitech resin filters for best bang for your buck.
I have a few questions about the ae-1 since I've recently come to own one through a relative. I got it with two lenses both 50mm 1.8, but one FD and the other FL.

Question #2: Do you guys have any recommended lenses for regular street photos, other than the kit 50mm 1.8?
Question #2: I was comparing the light meter of the camera to an app on my phone and it seems that the camera's meter works fine, it's just inaccurate. Is there a fix to this or am I stuck using my phone for reference?

>>3133769
Not really.
It mostly depends on the lenses available for the camera.
After that look at features, such as meter, battery free operation, priority modes, etc.
As far as film cameras go, the X-700 is a pretty solid choice. If I were tou I'd be looking at new MD lenses, not another body.
>>3133758
I recommend the free-est one you can find.
You will print 4 photos and never touch it again.
Seriously do not worry about the lense either. They will all produce very acceptable prints from f/8 onwards, presuming they aren't destroyed by filth or fungus.
If you have the option or the insatiable urge to spend money, however, 6-element f/2.8 lenses are the way to go.
For heads, colour diffusion models are the easiest to use. Condenser models are sharper and brighter, but require scrupulous dusting of all condenser elements, and the filters and the negs to produce perfect dust free prints. If you're not autistic about dust, or alternatively you are massively autistic about it and print in a climate controlled, HEPA filtered clean room (yes really people build these for printing) they they are the way to go.
Older Durst and Leica models seem to need a whole heap of expensive and hard to find parts to change lenses or masks or filters, etc, so I'd avoid them.

The Canon won't make the slavic shithole you live in any less dark, however it will give you better exposures for the most part, and much better film handling.
You can even adapt your Zenit lense and shoot it in aperture priority if you don't want to lose the speed of the prime. Even without a microprism the superior viewfinder will probably make it easier to focus.
Really, swapping a Zenit for literally any other working camera is a no-brainer.

Can I get some samples of the shots some of you guys get with bw film BEFORE you edit in post? Trying to get an idea of what my shit should look like fresh after I develop a roll and scan.
As of now most of my shots come out lookin really pale and grey, instead of what I would imagine black and white film should look like.

What's the best scanner I can get for €200. I don't plan on scanning medium format so 35mm only.
So, the 1/1000 speed on my Minolta XGM is dead. It cuts the frame to half, and a friend of mine told me that is cheaper to buy another body alltogether than fixing the one I have.
So, should I get another XGM? (Im in love with that camera btw)

It pribably isn't broken, just in need of a CLA. Everh camera needs one eventually.
The thing is, a CLA costs around $100. Thats about the pric eof a new body. Unless you have some sort of sentimental attachment to it, it can be easier just getting a new one.
I'd recommend the XD-7 btw. Supposed to be pretty solid.

Where's a good place to buy film in Los Angeles? I need it tomorrow so getting it online is out of the question.
I have come to the conclusion that I hate black and white film.
I loaded a roll into my rangefinder and it has been in there for weeks and I am only up to 12 of 36 shots. It is taking forever to finish.
I keep finding myself going to take pictures of something neat only to realize it will look boring without color.
Am I doing it wrong?
>>3133967
Just do it, the process alone is almost magical, seeing your image slowly appear on the paper. The possibilities are endless, you only truly see how the negative is just the intermediate phase of the photo, you can do so much with printing. Dodging/burning, split grade, cropping, toning etc. and that is just black and white. Of course having actually good photos to print is a benefit.
I also have a fuckload of negatives from my (great)grandfather in the Dutch East Indies, most of them don't have existing prints so there's even more meaning added to the darkroom process. Maybe your family has that as well
>>3134299

>>3134303
Yes. Take photos of things you want in colour with colour film and things you want in b/w in b/w. If you notice you don't take a lot of photos in b/w, stop using it. I do roughly 70/30 (colour/bw) and if I really want to switch during a roll I just wind it back and write the number of exposures on the canister so I can load it again afterwards

i wanna shoot a ISO400 film, black and white, at night, and i wanna dev it @1600, to get the best possible results in terms of exposure (shadows/mid tones) should i meter @800 or @1600?
>>3134424
Your shadows and mids are going to be pretty fucked regardless.
I'd say shoot at 800-1600 depending on available light, dev @ 1600 in a suitable developer like Rodinal stand (other people will likely have better developer recommendations)
Hey guys . Today i went to receive my prints from the lab and when i opened them i saw that there were a lot of white smudges in most of them. I know its not the lens that are dirty because i cleaned them before using them. Maybe its the print that is bad?? Or maybe dust on the paper that the photos were printed?? Should i try and reprint them in a different lab??

>>3134436
Tri-X and HP5 easily push to 1600 with remarkable shadow detail, especially on 120. Stop talking out your ass
>>3134439
I said shooting at 800, not developing at 800. Shooting at 800 and pushing to 1600 makes a huge difference than shooting and dev'ing at 1600. If you're too autistic to understand how that works, I say learn exposure prior to attending to help.
>>3134443
Not that poster but I would appreciate if you explained the general idea
>>3134424
if the goal is to get good shadows, and using a tripod is not a problem, you should shoot it at 400, calculate for reciprocity failure, and dev it at 200
shooting at 800 and devving at 1600 will give you very high contrast images, with bright highlights and almost no shadow details. that might be desirable, but from what you write it seems like its not what youre going for.

exposing at 800 (or even 640), then pushing development to 1600 will give better detailed mid tones, but denser highlights. Shooting and dev'ing at 1600 will give higher contrast, less detail in potential mid tones, and literally no shadows.
In an ideal world if you're shooting at night, metering for 640/400 then pushing 2 stops would be great, then you'd get the best details in mid tones and shadows and a little less recoverable highlights, but hp5 or tri x takes overdevelopment of 2 stops pretty badly.

>I grey balance off the orange mask to neutralize it first. Then invert, then work on the colors.
(i guess grey balance and color balance are the same thing?)
the scans from the shop have a teal tint and are a bit faded.
on my scan i do:
-color balance for the orange mask in LR
-invert in PS
-compress r/g/b separately with Levels
-grey balance
the result is a perfectly white balanced image with no fade.
i mean, what characteristic of the film is then left untouched?
>>3134888
So then push it 1 stop...
>>3134920
i'm stumped because i kind of expected VSCO-like results from film, and i'm now learning that the attractive "film" characteristics are simply derived from scans with improper black/white points and color balancing.
if this is wrong i would love to be corrected.

>>3134983
Any help would be appreciated
>>3134994
any method of fixing this is going to cost more than just getting another K-mount body. desu though I can't see a light leak
The Ricoh KR-5 Super II is pretty alright, anything that takes K mount will be fine.
If you're having to tighten the film winder on your camera it sounds like it's on it's way out as it is
>>3134997
marked out the area
Yea the winder, suddenly just gets loose as fuck.
Hows the finder in that camera? I really dig the massive finder in mine
>>3135000
if that was a lightleak you'd see the light bleeding onto the sprocket hole area. The entire area of the film is light sensitive, so if you had light leaking in somewhere you'd likely see it across the entirety of the film area or at the very least not stopping at frame lines.
It looks like the camera didn't advance properly and you made an exposure 'in between' frames. So yeah winders probably fucked my man
>>3135000
Perfect size of a frame, not random like a lightleak.
Something weird is going on.

>>3135022
its pretty
>>3134228
So right after scanning they should be pretty flat and dull?
How about for color film?
>>3135034
people get really defensive about the developer and technique the use, most of it is garbage/magic thinking and the differences are small imo
I use hc110 only because I got a bottle of it with some other stuff and it lasts forever. I'm too lazy for a two part developer or anything that needs to be mixed from powder.
So I had this issue with 1 roll of film on my new XA2.
The whole roll had these lines on them, top an bottom of the photos. Of course I thought it was light leaks but the foam seals are in great shape.
My 2nd roll of film has none of these lines on the entire roll.
So any ideas wtf happened to that first roll? I am hoping it was a fluke with development, sent it to a lab, not the camera itself. Or perhaps it was my mistake and the film was not flush in the camera and got crinkled up.
Film type was Fuji 200 Superia. Pic related.
