90$ did I get fucked or did I just get a nice start in film photography?
a little
is a nice start though
Have fun! Post results.
Given I saw one of these for $13 and it's an average fixed lens rf that requires a discontinued 1.35V mercury battery to run its meter, you could have gotten something way way way way better for $90. A decent SLR, for instance. If the price includes that whole portra pack it's *slightly* better.
The real answer is: whatever, you already have it, enjoy it. Asking after the purchase is just redundant damage control.
I wouldn't say you got fucked if that's what you wanted. Just curious why you went with a fixed lens rangefinder? For that money you could have an interchangeable lens SLR. Canon AE-1 P or regular, Pentax K1k, Olympus OM1, 2... take your pick, they're available.
Go out and start shooting!
My first real camera was an AE-1P. It came with a ton of other lenses and accessories, but I ended up only using the 50mm. I would've loved to have gotten a smaller rangefinder like that instead.
Portra is one of my favorite films too
yeah I mean that five pack of portra is worth like 40 bucks alone so it's cool. and if size is an issue for you, you made the right call not going for an SLR. personally I have an AE-1 that I carry around as my EDC setup, usually with a 50mm or 35mm. It's not really something I'd want to toss in a bag, i keep it around my neck or shoulder when I have it. But a rangefinder is good for a pocket setup.
If that's a 5-pack of Portra 400, and the camera's shutter and film transport work, then you could've done slightly better (in having a camera where the meter works without obsolete batteries or adapters) but that's not bad either. Portra 400 is a good film to shoot by guess metering, which is what a lot of leicafags do on teh reg. The Zuiko lens on it will be very acceptable, but watch out for flare as it'll be singly-coated.
Don't shoot more than one roll on the first go; don't want to waste them if the camera doesn't actually work.

he could put a 1.5v in there and just overexpose two or three stops.
