"Previous OP is nowhere to be found after writting the wall of text below" edition

This is the thread for posting your film images without flushing them down the Recent Photo Toilet.
It is OK to talk about gear in this thread.
>just posting in the /fgt/ doesn't make you gay; unless you're heavily invested in third party A-mount glass

After a protracted absence from the OP role, I feel the /fgt/ has slipped far enough that it requires my gentle guidance once more. You gypsie fucks can't be trusted with anything. How hard is it to post an OC square format image that actually contains some film to start a thread? Why can't you post photos here, for the love of god? It is heartening to see the number of film-only blog threads increasing, even if many of them are started by tripfriends; /p/ is indeed a film board. However, this thread is where we need the rank snapshits to start accompanying one-liner response posts; don't be afraid to fill this thread with the kind of throwaway FILM images that characterise the digital RPT. It doesn't take away from your text-post to attach a little piccy.
>together, we can have /p/ disbanded and split into /vid/ and /film/...

The Vauthier markers are a series of matching sculptures that signify the location of the front line of the Western front as of July 1918, considered the turning point in the war for Allied command. Of the original 120 sculptures placed between 1921 and 1927, 97 remain, in various states of disrepair. Less than 10 have been restored to their original glory. While more well known during the height of the bicycle touring fad, these monuments have fallen into relative obscurity compared to other monuments commemorating the Great War, and are often found hidden in shrubbery or at odd angles. Many stand without fanfare or explanation, and with their embellishments slowly being erased by time, soon these markers will be nothing more than rounded stone.

Question:

I like saturated/vibrant colours. A Japanese guy takes photos with a colour I really enjoy but I forget his name but I can try to describe it.

Say a street in Japan, bright lights reflecting in a rain puddle, even on a window, wires hanging, people walking around, plain skies, dark but still bright colours I'm not sure if that makes sense.

Any film suggestions for that? And if you have a suggestion, could you attach a photo example?
(I'm new to film, so those examples would really help)

They have double exposure prevention.

You wind the crank forward to advance the film, and then wind the crank backwards to cock the shutter. It becomes a learned motion very quickly

You can't fire the shutter unless you first advance the film, so no double exposures

I've only shot it on a disposable and with a Holga so far, but I like the results. It's just black and white made easy(er).

I use it for exactly the same reasons: b&w is way more expensive to develop in a lab yet I don't shoot it so much to consider getting chemicals and do it at home so XP2 does the trick when I get the itch.

not my photo, I just own a Yashica. The film advance mechanism is prolly fucked up. Before I took mine in for a service I could sometimes just crank the winder back half a rotation to cock the shutter without winding the film on, so I'd imagine something like that happened to that bloke's Yashica

Just grabbed this on a flea market because it was cheap and came with a UV filter I can use for one of my other lenses. And it's also EF mount, so I actually have a few neat lenses to slap on. Is this an okay camera?

They still have it, same price than buying Superia 1600 here btw. Their shipping costs to Spain are expensive as hell (10€+VAT) so I'd only consider them if I wanted to buy a huge stash of film.

They sell fomapan cheap as hell though, almost half than local shops.
>>
>>3128202

Nothing wrong with the UV filter meme, just don't buy new from camera shops and don't buy cheap ones from eBay.

I scored a whole set of 77mm and 52mm Nikon UV's from an antique store for the price of one of the Promaster ones at a camera shop. One already took one for the team and saved the lens, the fuel clicker at the Petro in Laramie WY malfunctioned and sprayed me with diesel while filling the reefer and the filter took the hit, I was able to clean it but it's a lot easier to clean diesel off a UV than a lens

There's another group that specializes in rescuing obscure and discontinued films and I know they do APS, I've seen them advertised on APUG.org. I found my very first camera, which was a Samsung APS point and shoot and they dev'd my film from it if I can find the name I'll post it here. I want to say it's called film rescue or something.

The price and the fact that it's ISO 1600 kept me from buying it. I'm based at Germany and usually order stuff with friends. Price is a factor why I'm starting to like fomapan.

Using fomapan for daily snaps and switch to HP5 or Tri-X when I think I might have the opportunity to find some good subjects.

Well, the fact it's ISO 1600 is why I want to try it. My local lab is extremely push-phobic on colour film so it would be the only way I can get to 3200 EI colour film with a single stop, which is the most my lab would accept.

HP5+ is probably a good starting point

if you're gonna shoot a lot o B&W it'll be worth developing it yourself. it's a hand process, so labs charge out the ass for it. In actual fact it's far cheaper in chemicals than colour film, for me it costs about 70 cents per film I develop
>>
>>3128202
I don't care for the filter, but I'm using it to protect my lens. Gives me a fully weather sealed set-up.
>>
>>3128391
70 cent per roll or per exposure?
>>
>>3128389
B&W is easy, and I still haven't got myself to do it because I still have to buy a half decent scanner. I don't have the patience nor the necessary amount of autism to go full-on C41 development when a machine can do it for me for peanuts.
>>

So far, Portra 400 was always enough and doesn't look that bad when underexposed by a stop (related). Guess you could also push it 1-2 stops.

yeah per roll

the chemicals are dirt cheap. the only major expense is the initial outlay for a developing tank, but that'll only be $30 or so. after that you just need developer and fixer. fixer lasts forever and can be reused a lot before mixing a new batch. most developers last ages too
>>
>>3128413
C41 is just as easy as black and white, in fact it's probably easier since the time and temperature is exactly the same regardless of the film you're developing. Just gotta maintain consistent temperature for the developing time, but if you've got a sink and a bucket that's not difficult at all
>>
>>3128442
lomography doesn't make their own film, so colour 800 is a rebranded older stock. It could even be super 800

You're not going to get the full behaviour of silver black & white film from XP2. It definitely has its own look, like shooting b&w on a digital body but with C-41 negative film's exposure characteristics.

Quit being a little bitch and hit up wherever people get rid of their grandad's old photo chemicals and stuff.

Dude, if you're just going to get shitty lab scans there's no point shooting Ektar.
Just roll with Superia 400 and enjoy the extra 2 stops of speed, if you want, and the superior colour balancing your lab will do on a film they're used to seeing.

It's the pimpest Oly, that's all you need to know.
The main difference is a better viewfinder and a way less cheesy feeling wind and shutter action.
The multi-spot metering is a bit of a meme; any Olympus with the QR-code-looking shutter curtains will meter flawlessly in Aperture Priority with no adjustment 95% of the time.
That said, if you use it it will work fine.

The OM-4Ti is fucking good. But not $150 good over the OM-4; with the main differences being a bit of weight and non-fucked electrical thing, you could just buy $50 worth of batteries instead and then more film, for a camera that'll likely depreciate less in your hands.

That being said, the OM-4Ti is fucking good. Real fucking good. Easily the Japanese Leica of SLRs, but I've not tried the baby Pentax that was minutely smaller.

Wouldn't that be Minolta?

I mean, they partnered with Leica, and even supplied Leica with lens designs.

And just like Leica, they are completely irrelevant to modern photography.

I got a Minolta CLE recently and have been bringing it everywhere. So small, it just slips into any bag I want. I am using a Voigt 40mm though. I want to get some of the m-rokkors when I get a chance.

Hunting for the m-rokkor 28mm, but I can't find a clean one. Considering ordering a bad one and sending it to Kanto Camera to get refurbished. Has anyone done this?

I can only imagine the CL would be even nicer.
>>
>>3128607
Yeah, this is a completely useless topic for speculation. Just saying that the user experience on the OM-4Ti is nice, very convincing and smooth, the spot meter does exactly what the manual says. But again, this is what the OM-40 and OM-4 and OM-2 do as well, with varying levels of metering obvs.
>>
Has anyone had any success using smartphone lightmeters? I don't really want to buy one and have to carry it around with me.

No, considering if you don't like it you could easily flip it for $100. Film cameras aren't depreciating, if you pay fair market value you can always sell it for the same price.

$100 is top of the market though. I've been selling them for $80-$90 to ensure quick sales.

That's not the XA, that's an XA2 so zone focus only. There's no aperture priority in it either.

I think the XA is a bit overrated, the lens isn't that good and it's very fiddly to focus with. Also the square aperture looks really awful sometimes. If you can find one for cheap then it's worth it to try and resell if you don't gel with it, I got mine for around 20 euros.

So is Natura and Superia 1600 the same film?
>>
>>3128919
Some people say it is because it also has the same codes and the only thing that differs is the fancier branding in Japan to match their Natura compacts and some others just don't buy it and think they're keeping the superior Natura 1600 away from dirty gaijin hands. Even Press 1600 was confirmed to be from the very same rolls, just always cut from the middle of them for consistency reasons.

The point is, I doubt Fuji is keeping two completely different 1600 speed films in stock (each with their corresponding machinery) taking into account their current downsizing strategy. And IIRC, Venus 800 in Japan is the same as Superia 800 as well. Same case.
>>
>>3128921
Also adding: even if at some point in time they were different films, it's most likely that both are cut from the same rolls nowadays.
>>
Does anybody have an idea what film is actually Lomography 800 35mm? I got another box today and this time I checked and it's made in the USA. The only film that comes to mind is Portra 800 but that one costs more than twice as much so it wouldn't make sense. I've checked older negatives and they only state "CN800" in the sides so I'm completely lost.

Thinking of getting myself a dslr negative scanning setup. I have a Nikon D90 and a 40mm macro lens. Tripod should be easy to acquire and useful in general anyways.

I was thinking of photographing from a small lightbox. I see the price for these ranges quite a bit from cheap $20 led ones on Ebay to hundreds of dollars for professional photgrapher ones.
How much would you invest in one? I guess the more expensive ones are more evenly lit and have a wider color spectrum. Guess I'd mostly digitize B+W film with this, but good color reproduction would be nice to have.

As long as you're able to get a considerable amount of detail and color correct the shots to the best of your ability than the setup works well. One thing I've noticed that I was actually about to ask is that during scanning photos with a blue or grey sky faint brown streaks tend to show up. Is this due to the inconsistent lighting on the pad? Don't have a sample photo to post at the or I'd post.

Slides and Portra/Pro400H/Ektar are too expensive to be everyday films. Superia 400 is not much worse but costs less than half, and then you have Fomapan for a dime a dozen if you live in Europe.
>>
>>3129021
Its part of the film vs. digital debate.

You can't replicate the uniqueness of film, so by choosing to shoot in film with the most 'uniqueness' you are justifying film photography.

My personal opinion is that I don't much like seeing crazy grain all the time, but it can look cool in certain places. Film's strengths are also in its resolution & colour. I'm against expired film generally; Its fun but its also totally random & unprofessional. Fine if you're a hobbyist but how can you take ownership of that 'cool' effect when you literally had no direction over it.
>>
>>3129044
Film can do some things that digital can't, so going the opposite direction doesn't make sense to me.
>>
>>3129022
This really develops my film
>>
>>3129044
I will never understand the argument in favour of film grain/artefacts. Yes, film looks better than digital in lots of ways and that’s why I shoot it, but that comes down to its unique strengths (capturing light, colour reproduction, dynamic range, frame size, etc.) rather than its unique weaknesses (grain, leaks, inflexibility, randomness, etc.). It’s like people who listen to vinyl and enjoy the surface noise. Hipsters flock to it because it’s the strongest identifying feature but back in the day you’d give your right arm to be rid of it.

>Camera Model X-300

Does it have any "downsides" (such as not being 100% mechanical, being more prone to breakage etc. etc. I don't know)

Thanks for the suggestion, I do have a newer model (Yashica FX-7) but I've just always loved the Nikon F, it's a piece of history as cheesy as that sounds
>>
>>3129095
I think the only downside the Minolta has is that you need batteries to operate the shutter so yeah, it's not 100% mechanical. Aside for that I like it because it's extremely simple and idiot-proof, especially on Auto mode (which is actually Aperture Priority) yet still has comodities like auto-sync when you connect a flash or the AE-lock button.
>>
>>3129095
If you want a piece of history and a camera that's a joy to shoot, buy an F3.

Also being mechanical doesn't ensure reliability. There are many mechanical cameras that are prone to breaking and although many old cameras with electronics are now bricks, electronics aren't usually a bad thing either. For example my father's Nikon FE works just as well as it did 30 years ago. I have not experience with Minolta cameras, so I can't/won't comment them.
>>
>>3129099

Minolta? I'm confused now. I was tallking about a Nikon F and a Nikon F Photomatic

>>3129100

The F3 is from the 80s, the F is from 59/60s
Maybe being pedantic about the centuries seems a bit silly. I, however, am.

And yeah, being 100% mechanical doesn't ensure reliability, true. It does ensure that I won't suddenly be in a situation where it can't simply be repaired but just will /not/ work because I do not have X batteries since they don't exist (a bit extreme, but that's why I would prefer 100% mechanical)
>>
>>3129100
The good thing about Minoltas is that they're cheap. If my current one ever goes kaput I can just buy a new body on eBay from like 30€ (X-300s) to 70€ (X-700) and call it a day.
>>
>>3129095
That's me: I see why it's confusing now. I had a copy paste of the Minolta X300 that's why it greentexted it, my bad.

I was talking about Nikon F and Nikon F Photomatic.
>>
>>3129113
I don't really understand your way of thinking. Are you buying a camera or a conversation piece?

And that battery problem is simply solved by buying a camera that uses a commonly available battery and carrying a spare one.
>>
Hey film people, what would happen if you used a fisheye lens on an enlarger, with a rectilinear print - would you just get a fisheye - looking print?

Second question, if you used a fisheye lens to print a fisheye negative - would that, uh, "double" the fisheye distortion? Or would projecting the image back through the lens reverse the distortion?

If you use the smae lense to take and to print a photo, you're going to get an exact reproduction of the scene, with a natural rectilinear projection, no matter what the lense is, ASSUMING that the print is life sized.
You could only imagine that it would be optically perfect. If you were shooting head and shoulders portraits with a threadmount 75mm Hektor or something, and had a fuckhueg enlarger/projected your prints onto a wall, you could make some very fine 11x14's indeed.
As prints are very rarely ever life sized, however you'd need to consider that the a angle at which the lense projects is going to severely limit your ability to print anything at all with a fisheye. If you took an 8x10 sheet and had the lense literally touching its surface, you would only end up with a massive pincushion-distorted enlargement of the very centre of the neg.

It's an ordinary camera with the same lens mount as Contax, so you can buy a very nice contax/yashica mount Carl zeiss lens.

The 45mm Tessar pancake or either planar 50s would be a good start.

A camera is a light tight box mate. Lenses are what make the image.

I don't prefer the look of grain so much as the appearance of detail, interaction between grain and scanner, and characteristic curve and colour response of the film. That's to say: I like things in the background to fade into a soft mush rather than a distant angry sharpness that my equipment couldn't catch. Plus cubic grain is cheaper and less prissy for dev & handling.

Now the real question is, what filters do you put on top of your B&W? I've nearly always got a light yellow or yellow on.

C/y lens mount is what's on your camera.

There are a million autistic posts on rangefinder forum discussing the relative merits of these lenses.

Most will be out of your budget but the 45mm tessar and the 50mm 1.7 planar can be had for less than 200 bucks.

Contax made very nice well made cameras. Yashica made plastic pieces of shit with the same lens mount. Yashicas are therefore a pretty great bargain if you're willing to spend money on glass.

>>3129256
Just checked and all it says is that it's manufactured by Ferrania and that is has 36 expositions, but it doesn't match any other film available. Probably old Ferrania stock re-spooled in the US? If that's true, that explains the scarcity but it also means it will eventually go the way of the dodo. It's the only available 35mm 800 film that doesn't cost an arm and a leg and I wouldn't want it replaced with chinese garbage like their 120 version of the 800CN film.
>>
>>3129148
Well in that case I still recommend looking for a newer Nikon. The original F has mainly mainly historical value and not so much practical value, i.e. cameras such as F2 and FM2n beat it in every way. And I still think that if you want the ultimate film Nikon experience, F3 is the way to go. If you want more versatility, go for F4 or F5 and if you want more simplicity, FM2n or FM3A is the best choise.

Summa summarum, buy an F3. It's even styled by the same guy, who designed cars such as BMW M1, Lotus Esprit and Porsche Tapiro.

I'm a newfag to film. I barely shot two or three old canisters of Kodak Gold with a Minolta XG-M my gf got me.

I'm not in the US so places to develop pictures are scarce, and even more so, places to buy good film.

A friend of mine is going to NC in a few days and I was thinking of have him pick up some development kit and some film. Was thinking 6 rolls BW and 6 rolls color. Any recommendations?
>>

Contax T, the first one. I don't think that's gonna be cheap tho.
>>
which MF camera should I get?

I've been looking at a Bronica SQ-A with Zenzanon-PS 80mm f2.8 with the waist level finder. However, it seems to be near impossible to get one in good condition in Europe.

where do you get your Fomapan at 3€?
>>
>>3129977
Not that poster but you could order from foma themselves, the postage is a ridiculous 13€ for every order but if you buy in bulk that might still be pretty cheap, the 35mm fomapan 100 is 3€ and the 120 version is 2,5€
>>
>>3129970
buy one from a Japanese eBay seller
>>
>>3129977
>>3129981
In fotoimpex it's just a little bit over 3€/piece for both 35mm and 120 when buying in bulk (10+), with 400 being a little more expensive. Even with the 10€ shipping to Spain it's a fuck ton cheaper than buying locally (~6€ piece)
>>
>>3129977
I mostly buy at Dutch webshops, but, like others said, the German Fotoimpex and Foma themselves are cheap too.
>>
>>3129574
Google "photo finish"
>>
I use a nikon fe2 and got 3 tri-x 400 films developed and printed in 2 different labs, but I don't really like the results. the pictures are very high contrasty and too sharp for my liking.

are there other, softer, less contrasty films you can recommend?
>>

but that will result in large import taxes
>>
>>3130032
idk what country you live in but in Ozland there's a threshold for import taxes (I think it's 1000 ozbux), so if it falls below that then you don't pay any import fees

also there's probably some exemptions for import tax depending on the nature of the item

Just found out I'd ran out of archival sheets on the sly. What's worse for 35mm film, temporary storage in 120 sheets at like two per bag, or being left hanging for a couple of days more? Remembering how labs used to send negatives back (in a stack, four per row I think), I'm thinking that's not that big of a deal long as there's no abrasive crap stuck on the strips.

>>3130048
Dank colour reproduction. Possibility of mounting in slides and projecting, which is danker still -- especially in medium format and larger.

>>3128313
You don't deserve one.
>>
>>3130048
for pro photographers back in the day, they were attractive because a slide was a final image and could be quickly printed from without tedious darkroom work.

nowadays they just look amazing. medium/large format transparencies are like nothing else.
>>
>>3130060
thats what im saying i guess
it wouldve been very convenient back then
but well really whats the point nowadays
we just love how film look thats all
and I really hate that people are rushing to end the film
saying "digi can perfectly simulate the film look" but they don't
maybe will but not now
why are they so in a hurry?
>>
>>3130039
Denmark.

Threshold is 75dkk or 10€
>>
>>3130065
I don't think any film shooters are rushing to be done with it. There's a reason there's still so many of us, holding on by tooth and nail.

But being realistic, I think film as a physical medium has maybe 10 years left in it. I really can't see it existing in any meaningful form after that

can anyone recommend a service in the UK that delivers 35mm film to you, then I post it back to them and they process it? would ideally want a digital copy and maybe the processed film returned, not bothered about printed images. I used to do this in the 90's and they would send you a free roll of film when they returned your processed roll. maybe I'm dreaming

Any resources or collected works of reloaded disposable cameras? I don't use film very often but I've always been interested in this.

Primarily planted in the 1930s, the forests encapsulating the Zone Rouge around Verdun were designed to prevent intrepid explorers, large livestock, and farmers from making use of the UXO inundated land. In addition to the millions of tons of unexploded ordnance, the forest is also the final resting place of over 100,000 missing soldiers. The trees are so thick, they've created a literal wall surround the Zone Rouge.

so you shoot it at 400? or sorry im still learning
>>
>>3130394
The lomography disposables are designed to be reloaded relatively easily. Maybe you can start there. I still have an empty one at my desk waiting for me to get bored and load it with Superia 400 or something.
>>
I know this has been asked a billion times but if I buy film online will it get destroyed by X-ray machines? Or does that only apply to film that has already been exposed? Soz again
>>
>>3130500
the answer is 'it depends, but probably not'

most postage doesn't get X-rayed. There's simply too much of it. How do you think you can so easily buy drugs online and not get caught?

If it does get X-ray'd it's unlikely to be affected. People say high ISO film is prone to damage, but I've traveled extensively (10+ trips through a hang luggage scanner) with some Natura 1600 and that came out looking great with no effect.
>>
>>3130500
There's no clear consensus. Some people claim that handbag scanners have ruined and fogged their 200 ISO film, some others claim that even 800 ISO will be fine. About buying online I guess it will most likely depend on your countries' policies or the courier agency, maybe you can try a small batch first? I mean, stores wouldn't sell film online if it wasn't safe.
