Does anyone here use Silverfast SE Plus 8? I'm trying to get as flat a scan as possible, ala Alex Burke in EpsonScan, but can't figure out how to lower the gamma on the histogram.
ITT: Scanning techniques or recent scans
i use SF ai studio, put max highlights, contrast at 0. a tiny bit of exposure boost and thats about it. oh and portra NC preset or superia if fuji. would take a screenshot but that gay ass program needs the scanner to be connected.

as for scans, heres one: left is the right out of scanner flat shit, right is a couple seconds of meddling on hue and contrast.

this is what I want, but this program doesn't even have a max highlights dialog box, and the histogram goes to 0 but thats only the optimized option.
Ignore the edits to the curve on left, but if you can see that, its how the histogram looks from a flat scan using the Alex Burke method on EpsonScan, and the other one is the SilverFast option without the ability to open it up along the black curve more. The scans look good as they are, I'm not that upset, its just I'm worried about how thick the blacks will come out on matte paper.

use SF ai studio.
>>3125771
yeah just got it, I'll update y'all in a bit.
>>3125715
oh wait when you say Contrast at 0, do you actually mean bottomed out? at -50?
>>3125785
cant remember dude. cant be arsed to plug the scanner either. but just fuck the sliders until its all grey. iirc its -50 for contrast and highlights at +50, both at the extremes. never use the official exposure slider, use the "other" exposure control, theres one that clips highs like nothing, dont touch that one.

>can't even work out how to control exposure and contrast in his scans
>calls DSLR scanners cucks
>defends shatbeds by pointing to the work of the best photographer on /p/
>ignores that he shoots large format, in the most beautiful places in america, using grad filters and in camera dodging to control the neg's contrast before it even sees a scanner, and that you could probably scan them on a fax machine and they'd still look good

>be called digislug in february

>ignores fact shitty and good imagery are both scanned on flatbed scanners.
>expects that all the work done in camera magically makes any scanner and scan software and digital workflow comparable to any other.
Hey there dumbfuck, I used the term "ala Alex Burke" not due to my expectations of my images being similar to his in exposure, contrast or even the fuckin subject matter, but due to the fact that Alex literally made a blog post I've referenced here before about how to get the flattest scan possible. I hadn't used the software before and I was asking how to get results *comparable* to the flatness of a file using his method in a different software.

I'm getting good stuff now, Contrast -25, Midtone slider between +10-25 depending on image. Thanks!

wow that truly looks like shit.
I've never critiqued someone for using a DSLR rig, but I do recall recommending the advantages of the scanner, cost permitting.
>never called someone a cuck in my life
>mfw i invented the term "dslr cuck scan"
feels quite comfy desu senpai.

>feels quite comfy desu senpai.
Not as comfy as scanning and batch editing a whole roll at 6000x4000px in less than 10 minutes, and adding it to your entire film catalogue scanned at the same fine resolution.
Here, have some 40 year old Plus X I shot last week.

I've never bothered to photograph it and I can't be bothered now.
Imagine a timber box about the size of a CRT TV. Inside is painted white, there are two radio triggered flashes pointing 45 degrees down to the middle, and an LED lamp providing continuous light, for focusing and seeing what you're doing. It's closed on the front too.
There's a hole cut on top of the box, about iPad size, with clamps to mount diffusion material inside it.
On top of the box is an enlarger column, and nome rubber nubbins to sit a pane of glass, which is the film scanning surface, raised several inches above the diffusion panel.
On the glass, laid out in tape, is a track for the film, and a little cardboard window to mask either side of the neg, and give you somewhere to press down either side and hold the neg flat without touching it. Under the neg, in the track, I stick down flattened strips of foil to mask off the sprocket holes.
On the enlarger column there's an A7 with an FD50mm macro.
