this many people seriously do the everyday carry-knife thing? I thought it was just fringe and mall ninjas. I don't have anything against knifes, and I always carry a swiss when hiking/traveling but I just don't see any reason to in everyday life.

Some of us live in really shitty yet aesthetically pleasing neighborhoods or cities, and we just want to protect ourselves and our stuff.

Someone who makes it known they have a knife on them at all times and buys the latest and greatest tacticool stuff is just a mall ninja though

I admire your dedication, I guess. In the summer it's too hot to keep stuff sitting in my car, but I'll usually have a tripod and sometimes my SQ in the trunk during the cooler months. I also bought a Rollei 35 once and I thought it was the clunkiest piece of shit ever, I'm still searching for a film compact I like as much as my GR but I'm too cheap to buy a film GR.

I shoot in the countryside 95% of the time and nearly always move around by car, so I don't mind the heavy loadout. Typically I also carry a backpack to hold the full lens complement for the X-700 from 28mm to 300mm, a tripod and stuff like rain gear. Pic related is stuff I typically aim for.

For me the Rollei is probably the best compact so far, I don't trust any sort of automation worth a crap so I appreciate having scale focus and complete control over exposure. I used to have the Contax T2 but I ended up disliking almost everything about it.

Nothing flashy, I'm just a simple guy who finally had his fill of city life and now roams the countryside. I just do simple scenery shots that most people probably find boring. I just like calmness. If I shoot in the city, I aim for hours when the streets are empty. Very early Sunday mornings are the best time to be out.

That's actually my current bed. I don't have a regular place to call home, I just hop around from one place to the next to my employer's whims and right now I'm crashing at an old farm house. Moving is easy when you keep your stuff stashed in garbage bags. There used to be a time when I was living in a nice tidy apartment, but then corporate politics rolled in. I don't really care, because I have nothing I need to prove to anyone at this point in life. I usually go for 4-8 hour roams when I'm out for photos, in full gear, but of course you're just going to have to take my word for it.

>>3122601
The main bag is Hazard 4 Forward Observer Camera Bin, coupled with two Hazard 4 tele lens bags. They also make smaller lens bags that are similar but shorter. There's a small Tasmanian Tiger cigarette pouch that I use for stashing the light meter or filters. The rest are some cheap modular pouches I took from my LBE that I have from the airsofting times.
>>
>>3122645
not him but I have owned a Rollei and a few Blads, SLX is an electronic nightmare with a shit nicad battery.
other than that the Rollei lenses are superior even though some are the same lens formula as the Blad. The Rollei film path also holds the film flatter than the Blad. I can't remember for sure but I also believe the back supports both 120 and 220, but I prefer the Blad for the interchangeable backs, I keep one back for colour and another for B&W that can be swapped out mid roll.
>>
>>3122645
Personally, I like my Rollei 6008i better than the Hasselblad or Pentax 67. It's essentially the only MF camera I use anymore. The SLX is cool and similar to use but much more limited and as >>3122671 says, it has a much worse history for reliability. If you want to buy into this system, I would definitely recommend getting a 6006 or newer but note that if a body does develop electrical problems you basically should just buy a new one because you can generally get the bodies for less than the cost of repairs.

>>3122671
For my 6008i, most of the problems you point out with the SLX are solved. The backs are fully and easily interchangeable with integrated dark slides so you can't lose them. I had my NiCad battery recelled with NiMH cells that last so long I've only had to charge the battery once since recelling it three months ago. The 6008i has four metering modes including spot, average, multi point and something that I think is similar to matrix metering that only apparently works with newer lenses that I don't own. The newer lenses also have shutter speeds up to 1/1000th which my Blad can't do. Also, the accessories and lenses for the camera are much cheaper than Hasselblad stuff. I got my 80mm Planar for $150 and the 150mm Sonnar for $130
>>
>>3122706
Rollei also has lenses you will never get in the V system like zooms and the Super-Angulon 50mm f2.8. though I think those are still rather expensive

True, those rarer lenses are all probably $1,000+, but the three lenses you most actually need (50mm, 80mm and 150mm) can all be had in good condition for $300 or less each.

I've thought about buying one of those rarer lenses though. The 90mm 2.8 Macro lens was intriguing to me.

I was surprised that 60% of the photography community are hype fashion fags. Like they use vintage looking fuji or leica, they themselves have these artsy vocabulary and they dress so /fa/, and their photos have no story or meaning. >>
>>3123279

>>
>>3123282
Have you tried the EVFs on some of the newer models? They're pretty bright and no longer have that lag.

Being able to see just how exposed the photo is before you press the shutter is pretty nice too. I like them.
>>
>>3123282

>>3122154
Even the highlights on your watch are clipped.
>>
>>3123287

>>
>>3123290
Then you'll still be able to get proper exposure because you'd be underexposing slightly for things being super bright

If you really wanted to you could put the histogram in the EVF to make sure you werent blowing anything out too
>>
>>3123287
My D90 has EVF and i don't enjoy using EVF at all. It just doesn't feel right. I just like really seeing what the lens is seeing, directly through glasses not through pixels. And they must be expensive too, and the screen is mostly why it's expensive. I mean yeah you can't really bring DSLR to work, sure. Literally the only reason i might consider copping mirrorless, because i want to bring it to work or somewhere where i can put them in my thin messenger bag

i've owned the cle and the cl but i didn't really like either of them, too low of a magnification
on paper the cle is way better but i just didn't really like using it
>>
>>3124933

Pretty sure they have zero magnification.

I think the CLE is a solid camera, especially with the m-rokkor lenses made for it.

But the CL is a little fragile. The meters on the things go bad way too easily. Repairable, but expensive.
>>
>>3124945
you clearly haven't tried either camera, while the rokkor lenses are top notch the CLE body is garbage. It feels like an MD mount minolta SLR, nothing like a leica or even the CL. The CL is a tough little thing, the meter is the only real issue with it. Also the CLE is .58 magnification, it's a great vf it's just too wide for me

I got a CLE for my first body. Was tempted by a Bessa, but the CLE was just too cheap to pass up.

I love 40mm too, so the 40mm framelines were a big bonus.

Considered picking up a CL with a busted meter and just shooting with an external one, but couldn't find one I liked. Kinda seems like a waste to get another m body now unless it is a leica though.

I know its off topic but what is the point of a multi tool? It just seems like to many compromises to me, I feel like I would rather have 1 really good knife than 12 really bad tools.

it's like my feelings toward my swiss army knife I got when I was a kid, it has great tweezers, 2 bad knives, 2 bad flat screw drivers / bottle and shit can opener combos, a bad phillips screw driver, and ok set of scissors, and what I'm told is a leather punch

Thanks. I considered the Summicron, but to be honest, I don't think the difference in build quality and less than 1 stop are worth 4 times the price.
Regarding the upgrade to something faster, I was looking at the Nokton, but the distortion kept me from getting it so far. Asked some Anon in the last FGT about it (if you're reading this, many thanks, I forgot to answer). Alternatives would be a Summilux and a Ultron. The first one is quite pricey and currently I would rather spend that money on travels. The Ultron on the other hand is quite reasonable in regards to price, but I just cannot deal with that focus ring.

With my mirrorless or AF SLR, I tend to use my DNA8 bag. Nice and compact, fits a body with a lens attached, two other lenses, and some other small accesories.

With my rangefinder, I usually just throw it in my book bag with its leather case, or carry it on a strap.

Go on, make such a large print of your own photo, maybe someone will buy it for scrap value, complaining how hard it will be to sand off that dogshit in order to salvage the acrylic
>>
>>3128146
You idiot. I'm not saying the composition isn't an intentional part of the image.
I'm saying that's not why you dull fuccbois know about it. The composition has nothing to do with its fame. The size its printed at and the knowledge that it was produced by Gursky as a large, complicated composite is 100% of its value.

The fact that it's a completely fake image at this point is where its value comes from.

Not its composition.

Do you know anything about art valuation?
>>
>>3128148
Have you read any review or theory on it, ever? The composition is literally why people were/are raving about it. Claiming that the photo had 0% to do with tha value and that it sold for millions because of the Gursky name makes you look like one of those 'hurrr modern art sucks bc it's just the name, I could make the same shit and it wouldn't sell!' yokels. And claiming that the technique makes it so valuable is even more ridiculous, the intrinsic value would) could never be more than several thousands of dollars, if even that. It adds to the unicity of the photo, therefore increasing its value, but the photo itself is what made it so desired, nothing else.
>>
>>3128149
You clearly know nothing about either the art world or Gursky's fame and claim to it.
I bet your name is Tim.
>>
>>3128151
>Tim
Stop projecting, Kevin. I'm not a plebeian like yourself
>>
>>3128149
Have you?

"But it is more than that. For all its apparent simplicity, the photograph is a statement of dedication to its craft. The late 1980s, when Gursky shot to attention, was a time when photography was first entering gallery spaces, and photographs were taking their place alongside paintings. Photography “as art”, at the time, was still brave and new, and the simplicity of this image shows a great deal of confidence in its effectiveness and potential for creating atmospheric, hyper-real scenarios that in turn teach us to see - and read - the world around us anew. The scale, attention to colour and form of his photography can be read as a deliberate challenge to painting's status as a higher art form. On top of that, Gursky’s images are extraordinary technical accomplishments, which take months to set up in advance, and require a lot of digital doctoring to get just right."

"Justifying this manipulation of the image, Gursky said "Paradoxically, this view of the Rhine cannot be obtained in situ, a fictitious construction was required to provide an accurate image of a modern river." Gursky produced a very large chromogenic colour print of the photograph, mounted it onto acrylic glass, and then placed it in a frame - 81-151"."

If you think this is about the composition you're clueless. Have you ever even looked at it?

">A photo literally based upon the subdivision of the frame into horizontal layers in varying widths"
>varying widths
If it were 3 color blocks broken up evenly, instead of varying widths, so that it had some Rothko-like appeal, this could be true, but as it is? No, you idiot, it's no more impressed linear rendition than shooting parallel to the shoulder of a road. It's not hard. It's not technically demanding. You just have to hold the camera straight.

Gursky shot this and stitched it together from many, many frames. That's why it's such a large print. It's not upscaled. It's stitched. And it was done before 60mp stitching was ez

on the x100f (and possible x100t) the manual focus is sophisticated enough that you can get used to it and find it very useful. Its easy to learn the lens acceleration patterns and such.

You don't use it on these lenses the same way as you would a manual lens. Its not good for precision "jumping" to a specific point, but it gives you a convenient way of touching the otherwise hard to reach x100 focus ring with extreme precision, which is nice with AF+MF (full time manual focus override as long as half-shutter pressed)
>>
>>3130132
>Do they make that much of a difference on focus-by-wire rings

You shouldn't be manually focusing on a focus by wire ring, because focus by wire is absolute trash.

Depend on what gear you have any where you live. If I had a FF or some L glass that's obviously nice, I'd probably be less likely to carry it on the daily, unless I'm actively going to soot with it. But most of my gear is analog, and doesn't look all that flashy.

Could always buy a GR, X70, G15 type compact P&S that looks a little more discrete just to throw in your pocket when you head out.
>>
>>3131921
Possibly.

I have a Nikon FE, which is great, but heavy and not a pocket camera at all. I think a X70 would be great, but seeing as I have an XT-10, they are quite similar, but annoyingly different enough.
