you set an aperture but your deprecated mirror camera shows you the image always wide open. if you want to know what is in focus and what not (DOF) you press the button and the camera closes the aperture to the width you chose.

My Fuji can do live view at any aperture. I could slap a f/0.95 lens on there and the live view would show the dof at all times.
