who are some great photographers that inspire you ?
Tony Northrup and his beautiful wife Chelsea.
I find isi's work pretty inspiring because it reminds me that there are good pictures waiting in even the worst surroundings

Alec Soth is a beautiful human being and a brilliant photographer. I'm always shocked by the stories he tells in his books.

how do you guys find these photographers ? like is there any other place to get into photography besides /p/ ?
>>3122151
>like is there any other place to get into photography besides /p/ ?
Every place is better to get into photography
>>3122152
no i mean what forums ? how did you find those names ? i can't just take pictures, i have to gain inspiration from those people and be around like minded people of the hobby (on the internet/forums). it makes me feel left out to not know names or not being able to talk big and long about stuffs.

but i don't want to get into plebeian forums. i didn't get here by googling. googling is like trusting your tour guide for the best spots in the city you're travelling to.

by following a couple of art/design blogs that post photography
There're so many
Dan Winters
Clayton Cubitt (pic related)
Austin Hargrave
etc..
>>3122151
youtube something like 'photographer documentary', you'll get ones like william klein, james nachtwey, HCB, eggleston etc.
shit just reasearch every name in this thread and then find out who their influences were and research them. the art of photography has some great videos on famous photographers both past & present

Bamp again ! Again !
I try not to get too hung up on the photographers so much as the photos themselves. That being said there are a few photogs who's style I really like.
Toby Old-
Found his book "Times Squared" in a bookstore. He's great at capturing the atmosphere and feeling of a given scene. I really love photos that make you feel like you're there with the people in them.

Bruce Gilden-
Found him through /p/. Really love his candids. His pictures really tell a story, and like I said before, I really love photos that put you in the place of the photographer and make you empathize with his vision of the world.
Tho recently he did a series of these disgusting close-up portraits I really hate, not a fan

Tod Seelie-
Another one I found in a bookstore, this one from "Bright Nights." His "everyday" portfolio on his website is fucking orgasmic to me. Like Old, he's goddamn perfect at letting you peek into the lives of the people he photographs. You really feel like you're there.

Terry Richardson-
Gets a bad rep on here, and not without good reason. His style gets pretty bland after a while, he doesn't really do much other than the wide-angles on a white background with heavy fill lighting. But I absolutely love the way he works with models. You can tell he gets real personal with 'em, on a level most photogs don't seem to know how to do. I'm not even sure how he does it. Whatever his method is, you can tell he's having a lot of fun doing it, and I really love that.

Edward Weston-
Found him today, actually, from some other thread on /p/. Loved his work the moment I saw him. I can tell why he's categorized as an abstract, surrealist photographer. I'm gonna contradict myself and say that I like that his nudes almost always deny you empathy to the woman he photographs. She's not a person, she's a body. He does the same thing with his still life and landscapes. I don't think anyone would be able to tell "pepper # 30" was a pic of a green pepper if it wasn't for the name

Pretty sure someone already posted him but he's one of my favs. Again, like the others he's excellent at capturing the feeling on a scene and putting you in a position of empathy with his subjects.

After discovering Ken Rockwell, i have a hard time enjoying 'good' photos that don't obey the basic rules of composition
>>3125333
>He's a compostioncuck
>He thinks there are "basic rules" that one should never bend/break
Rockwell's work speaks for itself. Having a profound technical understanding can certainly only help, but if you strictly follow a set of arbitrary "rules" your photos will be dull as balls
>>3125346
But without composition, only you can understand your photos. Without composition, you can only make it to the exhibition by taking pictures of sad poor ppl, war victims, and black ppl.
I'm honestly not too well versed with famous photographers but right now my favorite would be Wynn Bullock. He redefined to me the idea of what a photo could do with his Colour Light Abstraction series and also imparts emotion to me with his photos (especially this one, Navigation Without Numbers and the photo Child On Forest Road) with a magnitude and consistency I haven't seen with any other photographers.
>>3125449
Sorry here's a larger version
Jason Lanier
>>3125384
Yes, but composition is more art than craft. If you try to follow the "rules" as closely as you can it'll only limit your options and make your pictures boring
I guess I should start beating children.
>>3125617
Good documentary tho
>>3125620

>>3125623
This are my favourite shots from Vivian I really love her story/work.

Simon Norfolk
Dan Winters
Joe Pugliese
William Wegman
Timothy Greenfield Sanders
Taryn Simon
Richard Mosse
Yousef Karsh

Donovan Wylie (currently going through all of his books while scanning work from Verdun and N. Ireland)
Arnold Newman
Tim Hetherington
Also, although not the direction I'm most in love with, I know a lot of friends who love William Eggleston's work. I just got two books, one by William Christenberry (working from memory) and Fred Herzog (modern color) which are very similar in body of work, design elements, and the color vibrancy. If anyone is into Eggleston, check them out.

I draw influence from many landscape photographers, but I'd have to go with Pep Ventosa as my primary influence
Vivien Maier is pretty great. Originally what got me into photography a year or so ago
His work is very contreversial so I suggest you be careful when you look for it, but Jock Sturges is quite a great photographer. That shot is one of my favorites.
