I am being asked to help some folks out with photography: head shots and the like.
What does /p/ recommend on a tight budget, two sets of two options:
Studio flash units or shoe-mount flash units
--and--
Should I set up to go to them, or have them come to me?
Speedlites will work fine.

I bought this guy and it hasn't failed me since.

I'm at least keeping an eye on guide numbers. I can get either for about the same price (going cheap).
So one for speedlights.

And one for studio flash.
Is that unit higher output than a speedlight?
Does it impede mobility?
And do either of you prefer to bring your clients to you, or to go to your clients?

depends what you and the client want
i am partial to a sort of Rembrandt lighting with a single strobe and medium soft box above and to a frontal side of the subject

>that picture: my face is so ugly I have to hide it
that looks like absolute trash by someone who doesn't know how even the most basic of correct lighting
Headshots are a bright and clear introduction, not a campy horror movie scene from alley shadows. It not only shows bad judgment and doesn't serve the purpose, but it shows low self-esteem "Hey it's the edgy hide-in-shadows queerbag who hopes if there's no light we won't see how bald he is!"

terrible bait.
