Hey y'all, I've been taking photos with my iphone and want to actually get into photography
I'm really interested in nature and city photography and am wondering what camera would be good for that and what to look at for editing software, if any at all.
Keep in mind i'm a broke ass college student and have a budget of less than $500
I'm going to post some of my photos that I've taken just to keep things interesting, also I've never really posted most of these anywhere so feedback would be neat!

Literally any entry-level DSLR (with a mirror that directs the image direct from lens to viewfinder, bigger and chunkier) or Mirrorless (the LCD on the back or electronic viewfinder show the image from the sensor, smaller, thinner) with interchangeable lens from any brand will be a good idea. Try to check your local stores for any offer on a kit (body + lens) in your price bracket and you won't likely go wrong.

Keep taking lots and lots of pictures. Then take some more pictures. You could also google "famous landscape photographers", you will find plenty, and see what they do. Ten take some more of your own pictures. Not sucking takes time and even when you start to suck less you will be demanding more of yourself. Enjoy the journey

You know the saying "watch and learn"? That goes double for photography. Like >>3112682 said, start looking up famous photographers of whatever it is you want to be doing.
If you want to do landscapes, then Ansel Adams is the obvious first recommendation. The guy is incredibly well-known for good reason. I personally like Paul Caponigro quite a lot, his Megaliths is fantastic.
i really appreciate the advice that i've gotten
i've just got to explore a bit more and finding some new and interesting areas that i can photograph
looking at what different nature photographers have done makes me more and more excited to be doing this

1. Don't get an entry lvl dslr, buy an old semi pro / advanced camera
2. Don't fall for the "muh megapixel" meme
My gf Sony Xperia Z5 has more MP than my Nikon D7100 and my Nikon rapes her phone in absolutely every aspect
3. Don't forget, that you need lenses and some cameras like the alpha 6000 have only shit & cheap lenses or expencive and good lenses
4. Never use the auto settings mode, get used to PASM modes
5. Look on (digital-photography-school) for a beginners tutorial for DSLRs
6. I don't like canon (hurr durr Nikon fag)
7. Don't fall for the "muh lense for everything" meme. There is no such thing. Just get a prime lense (like nikkor f1.8 50mm)
8. Understand photographic rules and how to apply them
Some quick tips:
-If you are not using a tripod, never go below 1/x where x = the focal lengh
As an example, you have a 50mm prime lense, don't set the shutter below 1/50 if you are walking around while shooting
-Play with the exposure compensition (x/-)
-Set iso to auto iso
-Don't use the m mode till you understand the exposure triangle, i mean sure you could learn in through that way, but it's easier if you stay with PSA for the moment being
And again, don't get an entry lvl camera. You should go for older used gear. My first DSLR was a used Nikon D80, used film before
Have fun exploring photography and forgetting half of the stuff i told you

I'll try my best to not forget this info. I'm making an attempt to absorb as much as I can.
Once I get a camera I'll have to mess around with the settings as much as possible

>I'll have to mess around with the settings as much as possible
Don't. Trust me on this, been there done that fucked up a lot of shots and most of my early stuff has stupid settings like 1/1000 shutter speed when it was completely unneeded just becuase I forgot I was using ISO 1600 outdoors during the day.
First, understand how does the exposition triangle work. Then figure out the A and S modes of your camera (Aperture priority and Shutter speed priority, also called Av and Tv in some brands) and what should you use them for while you leave ISO and Focus on automatic to minimize the chance of screwing up a pic because of too many variables in your head.
When you're confortable with those and you feel you have control over your camera and not the other way around (which might take weeks) THEN it's time to mess around with the settings or the manual mode, try manual focus and the different types of autofocus, different types of exposure like using the AE lock to expose a subject that's not in the middle, the exposure compensation roulette (+1, +2, -1...).

>-Set iso to auto iso
*but set the max that auto can go to ~400-800.
>>3112826
Not OP...
Auto iso is decent for street photography or if you find it confusing, but it doesn't allow you to purposfully under or over expose a image, does it? I've used it and find it can ruin what I'm trying to achieve because it always wants dead center exposure... I've got a Nikon D5500
>>3112987
>if you find it confusing
Yea, we're talking about complete beginners here
>it always wants dead center exposure
Tell it to fuck off with exposure compensation
>>3112685
Some good stuff I think I'll pay more attention to in this thread. As for this pic, maybe frame so railing is dead centre of image. And the half chandelier is a bit distracting at the top imo.
Be picky with your composition, and put a extra few seconds or minutes into what will be in your picture. Hard to mess up if you're doing that and using PAS modes really.
Can't link it, but the photo down a road - can see reflection of your dash. Pull over and stand outside. Will greatly improve your photo. More to that point, be willing to take an extra step closer, spend the time, look for another angle etc.
As for gear, go used if you can. You'll be able to get better stuff for far less than new. Don't worry about the newest stuff, figure it out on old stuff, then upgrade and grow into it

For landscapes I would pick up a used mirrorless fuji or sony body, and invest in some older, non AF lenses. For still work you wont miss the AF, and there are features that will let you nail focus easily. The lenses will also be much cheaper, and you wont be locked into any particular mount.

It's mostly if I see something cool, I pull over and snap it or I crouch down really quickly and take the picture because I'm embarrassed to be obviously taking photos in public for some reason

nah man its all good, started out just like you.
You cant get too creative with a phone, but much profits in buying ANY DSLR.
Sharpness and shit like that doesn't really matter at first, buy any kit lens and cheap used body, you can have loads of fun with it.
On top of that, I also recommend your next purchases being a zoom lens and a wide angle lens
