Are 645 medium format cameras even worth the purchase?
For years I thought anything smaller than 6x6 was stupid. Then I started shooting a bunch of 35mm in point and shoots. Realized how fun it was and how photography doesn't always need to be slowed down and super deliberate to get good results. Then I heard about the Fuji GA cameras, basically everything I liked about shooting 35mm point and shoots in a medium format package. Picked one up and have been loving it.
I still think shooting 6x4.5 with an SLR is silly, just as I think shooting 35mm with one is silly. But if you want to shoot MF in a portable package...there are a few good choices out there.

nice trips but please explain. not necessarily arguing, just curious.

If you wanna go medium format compact and can afford it you might as well go 6x7
it's not liek a 645 compact is actually compact compared to a 35mm or an aps-c digital like a GRD

Couldn't they have put a f/2.8 lens into these?
>>3112018
costs pretty much the same. all depends what you use it for
i use a 645 for travel and a 6x7 for when i can afford to slow down and set up the shot properly. mentally preparing myself for an 8x10 camera i guess

Exactly I wanna get a medium format rangefinder but can't choose between 645 and 6x7. The only benefit I see in 645 is more shots per roll. Also why are there no 6x6 rangefinders on the market?

There is the Mamiya 6 but it's not much smaller than the 6x7 Mamiya 7. But you can slightly retract the lens.

it doesn't cost the same if you're going for some really good shit like a mamiya 7 or a makina 67, they are on average twice as expensive as a fuji 6x4.5
>>3112016
If I'm going to bother carrying a camera around that can't fit in my pocket, I might as well be shooting at least 6x4.5. Just my personal preference.
>>3112018
It actually is quite a bit smaller depth wise. The retracting lens of the GA series makes a considerate difference. Here's a picture of it compared to a Mamiya 6 with the lens retracted (try to imagine the 6 without the lens hood). I used to own a Mamiya 6, the GA is definitely more compact than either of Mamiya's RF offerings.

I mean, sure. How that would affect final camera dimensions and price tag, who knows. I imagine if they didn't do it it's because it would have had a negative impact on one of those things. The slow lens is my main gripe with the camera.

I know I'm shilling the Fuji GAs hard, but I think it'd be a shame to have your first medium format experience be one. They really are just like big point and shoots. If you really want a 6x6 RF, I can't recommend the Mamiya 6 enough. Stellar camera and one I used for travel for years.
>>3112028
I'd say 3x as much. Fuji GAs are ~$350 - $450.
Have to admit that I don't like the 4:3 aspect ratio. In MF I got 6x6 and 6x9 and while I like the square format from time to time, I prefer 2:3. So, for it's not worth the purchase.

But anon, considering that 645 is almost twice as large as 35mm (FF), f/4 is ~ f/2.8 "equivalent".. muahaha

my Fuji GA645i
fun to shoot. haven't developed any film yet from it, but have around ~10 portra 400 rolls through it. getting it dev'd on thursday.
>>3112315
the best part is that you get 16 shots from it.
the camera also tracks how many rolls have been shot through it, which is pretty fucking awesome.
I shoot this camera mainly at night to utilize its on camera flash.
I also use this camera to shoot street photography with MF instead of 35mm because it has auto focus and auto exposure.
I bought mine with a roll counter of 18 for $580 shipped from Japan on ebay

no. better get xpan. at least you can get film for it.
the difference between 645 and 35 is much more significant than the difference between 645 and 6x7
so yeah buy a 645 camera if you've never shot medium format it'll knock your socks off
this is a bronco etr, the cheapest medium format system outside damn holga

But anon, the prostitute was standing still for you, and you still missed focus.
